Science

Students in sixth grade create three types of rock in a candy lab. Creating metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks, using Starburst candies and applying pressure, heat and extreme heat.

Cross Country

The IS Cross Country Teams traveled to Percy Warner Park this afternoon to compete in the Nashville Region State Qualifying Meet.All of our IS Cougar runners performed Outstanding.

On the Girls side we had Abagale Hay (14:46), Myrtle Yates (16:17) and Trinity Catellier (16:58) all set personal records for the 2 mile.

For the Boys side Mason Woodrick (12:11), Luke Page (12:35), Beckham Sonnabend (13:17) and Finn Shea (14:07) also set personal records for the 2 mile distance.

It is with great pride to announce that Abagale Hay, Mason Woodrick, Luke Page and Beckham Sonnabend all Qualified for the State Cross Country Championship meet next Sat at the Victor Ash Park in Knoxville, TN.

CA Fall Festival

Lower School News: October 17 – October 21, 2016

First Grade

First grade students have been traveling on the AP Trolley to APSU for an interactive PE lesson. The students have enjoyed the PE class, but love the trolley!

Jr Cheer

The Jr. Cheerleaders will practice on Thursday, October 20th from 2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Their first performance will be Friday, October 21st during half-time. Game time is 7:00 p.m and half-time is usually between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m.

 

Jr Dance Junior Dance Fall Mini Camp

October 25 and October 27
3:00 – 4:00 (immediately following school)
Each dancer will be picked up in their classroom by a Varsity Dancer
Parents need to pick up at 4:00 pm in front of the main school building
Cost is $40 which includes a t-shirt to wear to the performance at the Oct 28 football game.  If your dancer came to summer camp you do not need to pay this fee.  Please register by Oct 21 to Theresia Burchett, at tburchett@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Fall Festival

The annual Fall Festival will take place on October 29 from 10AM-3PM on campus. There will be many games, activities, prizes, and auction items for all! We encourage you to bring your family and friends and enjoy this wonderful event!

FUN RUN

This annual tradition for Fall Festival takes place immediately prior to the festival opening. Runners should pre-register by Oct 20 and can contact Jerri Bragg at jbragg@clarksvilleacademy.com to register to run or to sponsor the run. Sponsorships begin at $25 and are open to student/family names. For example you could put The Bragg Family or Garrett & Layne Bragg on the shirt or you could add your business—Bragg’s Bags. We invite everyone to contact us about sponsorship opportunities.

 

NEW THIS YEAR

This year we are adding a Scarecrow Contest to our Fall Festival Activities. Students are invited to create to a Scarecrow that will be attached to a fence at the front of campus. Scarecrows should be constructed with durable materials (as they will be outside) and all items secured to them. Each must have support for the body which will be wired to a fence. Entrants should provide materials for attaching it to the fence. All entries should be installed between Noon on Friday, October 28 and 9:50AM on Saturday, October 29. Entries should be removed on Monday, October 31st at 3PM. (We ask all entries remain on campus through noon on Monday, October 31st.) Judging will begin at 10AM on Oct 29 and run through 1:30PM that day. Festival Participants will judge the entries. Questions regarding this new contest can be sent to Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Retake Day is Nov 3 for anyone who did not have their photo taken during school photo day. Students in Lower School will also have their class photos taken on this day.

 

After School Enrichment

We are pleased to announce that our After School Enrichment program will begin next week! We have two wonderful offerings—Cursive Writing with Mrs. Marla Clemments and Drawing with Pencils and Pastels with Mrs. Shelley Holt. Registration is online here.

CBL: SEP 2016

We Kicked-Off our 2016-2017 CBL year with a successful day.
We will innovatively investigate our Big Ideas, and Essential Questions. We will incorporate innovative guiding activities, and network with experts in the field as we utilize guiding resources. We will progress from our Big Ideas to our Challenges, and finally to our Innovative Solutions.
Our First Day found:
Our Health and Fitness group breaking into 2 teams with Hardison and Watson as facilitators. Mrs. Hardison’s team (seen below) is called “The Fit and The Furious”. Coach Watson’s team is “May the Fit Be With You”.

Our Mentoring Group under the leadership of Mr. Christmas and Ms. Beach have established a mission statement:
The Mentoring Group strives to redefine the strategies for mentorship in order to improve the lives of youth and make a lasting impact in our community.

Coach Burkhart and Coach Williams group, Food Security, began by volunteering at Manna Cafe. They assisted with Food Boxes and Food Distribution, and have scheduled their next investigative CBL day to visit Loaves and Fishes.

The Beautification group, under the leadership of Neizke and Drake, have partnered with Animal Control planning to beautify their site. They have established a joint effort with Animal Control and Lowe’s which will be painting, overhauling, and improving the site.

Mr. Boyd and Mr. Walker, Food Production, were on site at the Brandon Hill Community Garden. The group planted fall/cool weather crops. Seeds were donated by Montgomery Farmers Coop. The group was assisted by Karla Kean Montgomery County’s Horticulturist, and Michael Hampton of The Food Initiative.

Coach Magran’s Recreation Team Pura Vida visited Rotary Park as the installation of Clarksville’s First Disc Golf course is created. As the grant recipients, they will continue to oversee the project until it is completed.

Ms. Stonesifer’s First Responders group will be planning assistance for local first responders such as firemen, EMT’s, and policemen. They had guest speaker. Officer Ted Denney, who serves our Clarksville community at public servant with the Montgomery County Sheriffs Department.

Coach Jerri Bragg’s group Military Assistance traveled to the Public Library to view a portion of the Vietnam Traveling Wall. They departed for Ft. Campbell to view the Boots On The Ground display. They assisted in straightening flags that appear in the 7,210 boot display.

Our Transportation group, under the leadership of Mrs. Moore and Coach Hood had students share their experiences from the Vanderbilt Motor Vehicle Safety Program presented by the Pediatric Trauma unit. The group worked on their goal of having all members obtain a certificate for the program Ford Driving Skills for Life.

The Youth Matters group, under the direction of Coach Bauer, compiled information and investigated a variety of ways to support Youth in our Clarksville Community. As their first project, they painted Arts for Hearts. These hearts will be donated to people in our community to show support and compassion. They will continue to investigate ways to express support to local youth.

Mrs. Little and Mrs. Lindsey’s group Environment group has partnered with APSU with both Professors and graduate students as they assist a prairie restoration project on property recently added to Dunbar Cave State Park. They will remove invasive species, plant prairie species.

The Performing Arts group, now in its second year, will work with 2 components this year. They will focus on Theater and Vocal Performance. They have schedule a visit to the Roxy Regional Theater, and a performance at Dogwood Bend.

 

President’s Volunteer Service Award Winners

Congratulations to CA’s President’s Volunteer Service Award Winners

On October 4, 27 CA students in Grades 7th-9th were awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award. The President’s Volunteer award is a prestigious award that requires students to volunteer their time helping others. Students must complete their hours during a one year period. Six students received the bronze medal for completing 50 community service hours. Three students received the silver for completing between 51-99 volunteer hours and 18 students received the gold medal for 100+ hours. Some students achieved close to 200 hours for a single year! Last year CA awarded 16 President Service medals.

Homecoming

Thank you to everyone who helped to make Homecoming a huge success! The student council led by Mr. Kyle Christmas did a fantastic job. A thank you to all the parents who helped with dress up days, door/color wars, fence designs, and for coming out and supporting our Cougars at the game. This is a great week for our school, but could not happen without the support of our parents and teachers.

Thank you to our Alumni who joined us for the Homecoming festivities. 15 of our 42 past Homecoming Queens joined us at Halftime to be honored. This great group of lovely ladies made for a fun night.

Door/Color Wars Winners

Congratulations to everyone for such a great job today in the Color Wars and Door Wars competitions. Our judges said this was the toughest year yet!

For the Door Wars Competition—

Third Place was a tie for the 4th Grade and 3rd Grade Classes with a total of 91 points out of 100.

Second place was a tie with the two 2nd grade classes each coming in at 92.25 out of 100.

First place goes to 5th grade with a total of 96.5 points out of 100!

For our outdoor lawn design, the PreK classes truly outdid themselves with larger than life mascots, sound, photos and more! They scored a 100 out of 100! Way to go!

 

COLOR WARS

In third place is the Sophomore Class with their Pink Candyland theme earning 90 out of 100 points.

In second place is the Freshmen class with their purple Football Draft theme earning 93 out of 100 points.

And in first place with 99 out of 100 points are the…..JUNIORS with their Blue Beach vibe!

For Intermediate School, the 6th grade class with their Orange fall theme took home 3rd place, the 7th grade Emoji fun in yellow took the 2nd place spot and the 8th grade class and their Ice Cave took home the top spot with 93/100. Great job everyone!

Player of the Week

Julie Parks, from Heritage Bank, and Head Football Coach Todd Hood presents Garrett Bauer with the Player of The Week Award based on his outstanding performance in the home game against Collinwood High School this past Friday night, September 30th. Garrett had his best offensive effort of the year with 34 rushing yards and caught 5 passes for 57 yards and 1 touchdown. Garrett also had 12 tackles and 2 fumble recoveries on the defensive side of the ball. The Cougars won the region match up 21 to 20 in overtime on homecoming night. . Coach Hood declared “Garrett had his most explosive game yet this year and we game planned playing him at several different positions to use him more in the offense.”  He presented match-up problems for Collinwood all night.  The Cougars will be on the road this week verse Bruceton at 7pm in another region game with play-off hopes still alive.

Fall Festival Fun Run

October 29th at 9:30am- Kick off to the Clarksville Academy Fall Festival with the Fun Run. Registration 9:00am

Students and Parents of all ages are invited to participate on the morning of the Fall festival with CA Cross Country Team to Run with annual Fun Run/Walk. All fun run participants will receive a cool t-shirt, an official race number and refreshments. The cost is $10 and for more details visit the Clarksville Academy website under Fall Festival. We are looking for all families and businesses to participate in this wonderful event.

Interact Club

CA Interact club is hosting an interest meeting for anyone who is considering participating in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program on Tuesday, Oct 4th at 5:30pm in the Dorothy Martin Library.
The Rotary Youth Exchange Program is open to students who are 15-18 years old who want to travel to another country and also host a student from another country. Our local Rotary clubs offer partial scholarships and the exchange can be just a few weeks or up to a full year. Please join us to find out more about this amazing opportunity!

Upper School News: September 26 – September 30, 2016

Varsity Golf

On Friday, the Cougars and the Lady Cougars competed in the regional golf tournament at The Legacy in Springfield.  The Lady Cougars began the tournament with a mission, return to the state tournament, and they did just that.  Led by Hunter Farrell firing her best round of the season, a 76, the Lady Cougars defeated the competition to accomplish their goal.  Mallory Saleh shot an 82 and Michaela Dowdy a 90 to complete the team score of 158.  On the boys side, the Cougars put together their absolute best round of the season by shooting a 315 as a team.  However, Houston County bested the Cougars with a team score of 312.  The highlights of the day had to include Taylor Norris making a vow to break 82 and boy did he.  Taylor finished the day shooting an all time best 80 helping with the final score of the Cougars.  The other scores on the team were Samuel Nicholson 80, Bryson Batson 82 and Dawson Bagwell 89. Wyatt Samuels came into the tournament with one goal, make the state tournament.  Wyatt shot a 1 over par 73, and then had to wait and see if the score would qualify him.  After all the scores were in, Wyatt found himself in a familiar position, tied for the last qualifying spot for the to make the state field.  Wyatt matched up against Lipscomb Academy’s Paul Swindell for the last spot.  On the first hole Paul parred the hole and then Wyatt calmly sank a 3 foot birdie putt for the win.

Wyatt, Mallory, Hunter and Michaela will be competing at the state tournament October 3-5.

Players of the Week

Julie Parks, from Heritage Bank, and Head Football Coach Todd Hood presents Garrett Bragg with the Player of The Week Award based on his outstanding performance in the home game Montgomery Centra High School Friday night, September 9th. Garrett a freshman, had 19 carries for 87  and caught 3 passes for 43 yards. Garrett also had 7 tackles on the defensive side of the ball. The Cougars lost the non- region match up 35 to 17. Coach Hood declared “Garrett had to to step in at running back for us and he played great. Garrett is starting at corner and running back and we are looking for more big nights from this freshman.”  He ran hard all night long and presented match-up problems for Central. After a bye week, the Cougars will be at home with week vs. Collinwood at 7pm.  It’s homecoming week and the school is excited.

Matthew had 11 tackles, 1 forced fumble and 4 tackles for a loss. The Cougars lost the region match up 35 to 0. Coach Hood declared “Matthew had his most explosive game yet this year and we are looking for more big nights from our senior. Its was a tough loss but we must keep working and our younger kids are getting better every game.

Honors Biology

This week in honors biology students are doing a two part lab modeling the patterns of genetic drift and natural selection.  Students are analyzing data collected after simulating three generations of selection by a predator and selection by a natural disaster.  This key lab starts our unit on the process of evolution.

Great Job

Stone Norris presented at the Red River Tales in Adams on Sunday. He did a fantastic job talking about the Red River and how it had a huge impact on the tobacco industry. He did such a great job and we are so proud him!

 

CBL

Challenge Based Learning kicked off on Friday with many exciting new groups and some groups seeing the end of projects from last year. Mr. Magrans’ group Team Pura Vida is completing the installation of a Disk Golf Course at Rotary Park. On Friday they were able to survey the area and watch the initial installation take place. The students were also presented with a check from the Community Health Foundation for $29,000 to complete this project.

The boot display began today at Fort Campbell.  This event runs from September 23rd- October 2nd, from 8am-6pm on the Division Headquarters Lawn.  Coach Bragg’s CBL group was able to attend today. They were able to help the soldiers straightened name tags and flags. They were over 7,210 boots on the ground.

Drama Class

The Intermediate School Drama classes started a unit on monologues last week. They are having fun learning more about Shakespearean monologues and practicing them for each other as they rehearse.

They will be reciting them from memory in class on Tuesday! Way to go Drama students!

iLink

Intermediate School iLink kicked off on Friday centering on a year of giving back. Students will participate within their iLink groups doing good deeds or random acts of kindness. Many groups had a great start and did everything from helping our maintenance staff with projects, to leaving positive notes of affirmation around campus, holding lunch duty for lower school teachers, and inviting lower school to read or play. We look forward to seeing what great acts they perform this year.

The Caring Cawood Coffee Crew spread kindness to a few lower school classes during our first iLink meeting of the school year. While the teachers and students were out of the room, we sneaked in and cleaned their desks, vacuumed and wrote inspirational notes to them on the board. We ask for nothing in return except to pass the kind gesture forward!!

Physical Education

The Final Ceremony for the CA Olympics was held and medals were given to the teams with the highest scores. This was a great team building activity and the children had a great time.

CA Fall Festival

The Annual CA Fall Festival will be held on Saturday, October 29 from 10-3. If you are a vendor and would like to have booth at this annual event please contact Candice Wall at candicewall@att.net. More information regarding class participation will be available soon.

 

School Photos

School Photo Day will be held on September 19. Packets were sent home on Friday containing order information. Photos may be preordered either online or using the form. Questions regarding school photos may be directed to sragsdale@clarksvilleacademy.com.

 

FCA

FCA meets weekly in Coach Trent’s room on Wednesday at 7:15AM. We invite every IS student to attend.

 

Box Tops

This is a reminder that CA collects Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.

Lower School News: September 26 – September 30, 2016

Physical Education

The Final Ceremony for the CA Olympics was held and medals were given to the teams with the highest scores. This was a great team building activity and the children had a great time.

Second Grade

Second Graders learned about addends and sums while playing charades in Math Lab. They discussed and wrote problems after students acted out scenes of bowling, going to the movies, playing football, in a candy store, and swimming.

Third Grade

Mrs.Williams’ third grade classes are participating in a scavenger hunt around the room to learn about popular inventors from around the world.

Third grade students are working on graphic organizers using common and proper nouns. Students labeled and categorized pictures in the appropriate columns. Students were also creating a haiku deck using vocabulary words from their reading story.

Jr. Dance

Save the date for Junior Dance Camp with the Varsity Dance team, the week of Oct 24th for 2 days. The junior dancers, pre-k through 5th grade, will be performing at the October 28th football. More details to follow closer to date.

 

FUSE

Coach Daniels’s Intermediate School CBL group surprised Mrs. Morgan’s 4th graders by inviting them to a game of kickball! The “AOK” group did this as a “random act of kindness”. The students were very appreciative and excited!
