Clarksville Academy At Home Continues

CA At Home will continue through April 30 per Governor Lee’s and President Trump’s request. The current plan is for students to return to school Friday, May 1. This includes all athletic and after school activities. The athletic complex will remained closed during this time except for maintenance purposes.

Town Hall Meetings

Beginning Wednesday, April 1, we will host various town hall meetings via Zoom. These will cover a variety of topics like a Q&A session with Mrs. Hinote, Matt Wallace, and the Heads of Schools, a Tuition Assistance meeting, and one on one 2020-2021 class schedule meetings. Other topics will be added as needs arise. Most of these sessions will take place on Tuesday or Thursday throughout the month of April. The first Zoom meeting(s) will take place Wednesday, April 1. This town hall style meeting will take place at 3 different times, one for each divisional school. You are invited to attend the one for your divisional school. While the format will be the same for each meeting, the divisional head of school will join Mrs. Hinote and Mr. Wallace. Participants are asked to submit questions by 3PM today to the meeting. These can be sent to Sally Allen, at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Marketing Campaign

Recently you received one of our postcards about CA. We encourage you to share this card with a friend or neighbor who might be interested in CA. We invite you to share it digitally (make sure your name or address is visible). If that person shows admissions your card (digital or physical) and they complete the enrollment process for 2020-2021, your family will receive a $250 credit on their fees for next year. The Admissions Office is scheduling virtual school tours and one on one virtual chats with prospective families daily. CA Experience

We are hard at work selecting camps for this summer. If you have suggestions or requests for the types of camps you would like to see this summer, please contact our CA Experience Coordinator, Danny Magrans at dmagrans@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Important Dates

Steak Dinner—Due to the new guidelines, we are considering new dates for our Annual Steak Dinner. This will be shared soon.

Prom—We have currently moved Prom to May 16. More details will be sent to Juniors and Seniors regarding this change soon.

Graduation—It is our hope to continue with Graduation on May 20 at 6PM.

I read a funny little quip on social media early into our social distancing period that lamented our human response of ‘being over it’. The post then acknowledged that the only beings in our homes truly happy about everyone being in these close quarters are our pets.

 

In the Hinote household, we have 3 dogs, yes, three dogs. As someone who didn’t grow up with many pets, and neverhad pets in the house, my dogs are kings of our home. They have the run of the yard and every room, and they couldn’t be happier to have me with them.

 

As many of you know, I have just finished a weeks-long recovery from surgery, and after a brief stint back at work, like you, I am back at home. I am trying to figure out how to work at a distance from school and how to maintain a schedule. I am also trying to stay healthy, both physically and mentally.

 

If you have pets at home, I am sure that you feel the same way about yours that I do about the three of mine. In an April 2018 Psychology Today article, the benefits of having pets are outlined. While I am not advocating pet ownership, I do think this is a wonderful time to be reminded that the furry members of our households can help us.

 

• Stress Relief: In a study with college students who had the opportunity to interact with therapy dogs, as many as ten hours later, participants reported less negative emotion and less stress.
• Empathy and Comfort: Studies indicate that dogs sense emotions, both good ones and bad ones. They are drawn to us, especially when we need them. Dogs are often reported to remain at the side of a human who might need them.
• Decrease Loneliness and Depression: At a time when we are physically distanced from each other, and social media does not replace needed face-to-face interactions, studies also show that pet owners have a lower rate of depression.

 

My dogs have been by my side these past four weeks and are competing for lap space with my laptop. I am extremely grateful for them, and I do believe they lower my anxiety and help with my overall outlook.

 

Rely on your pets for these great benefits, and give your fur babies a hug from me!

Clarksville Academy believes in providing support students need in and out of the classroom. According to The Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), “Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. The closing of school may trigger some serious emotions in your home, and the implementation of some of these strategies may help your child cope while out of school.

It is important to know how to help your child. Let them know it is okay to be nervous, and you are there to support them. Children look to adults for guidance on how to react to stressful events.  Please reassure your child health and school officials are working diligently to ensure that people stay healthy.  However, children need factual, age appropriate information about the potential risks and appropriate preventive measures.

Be mindful of what your child is being exposed to on social media, news, and personal conversations. Talking with your child about their fears and giving them a sense of some control can help reduce anxiety. Parents can support their children by being available, remaining calm, and reassuring them.  We encourage your child to turn off the television, play a family game, journal, read a book, and monitor technology. Twenty-four hour news coverage feeds anxiety and fear in children.

It is comforting to many children to remain in a routine. Have a family schedule where you carve out time during the day for schoolwork, chores, physical activity, and encourage them to be consistent with the schedule.  If you feel you need additional support, please reach out to the counseling office at counseling@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Guests will pay $5 per person at the door, and all funds raised will go to support this year’s Junior- Senior Prom! Students in grades 3-12 are invited to participate! Marketing Campaign

In the coming days, you will receive a postcard mailer for our new enrollment campaign.  Each postcard is specially designed for select areas in Montgomery and surrounding counties.  We are sending over 6,000 postcards but strategically planned to send one to each of you, as well. We encourage you to pass your copy of the postcard along to a friend or neighbor who may not have received one.  If this person brings your postcard to their appointment with Admissions and fully enrolls for the 2020-2021 school year, your family will receive a $250 account credit.  This credit can be used toward tuition or fees.  You may also see our ads on social media and we encourage you to share them. We hope you will help us spread the word about Clarksville Academy and all the exciting things we have happening!

Athletics

Games this week: We have a full schedule of games this week (weather permitting) so get out and enjoy our Spring sports!

Varsity Baseball – Varsity kicks off tonight with a season opener at APSU’s Joe Maynard field at 5PM. On Tuesday they play Ensworth at home, Thursday they take on Goodpasture at home and Friday they will travel to Goodpasture! Come out and support your Cougars!

IS Baseball — Intermediate School Baseball will travel to Charlotte for a 5PM game on Tuesday, weather permitting.

Softball — Varsity softball will travel to Ezell Harding at 5PM. On Thursday, they will travel to Davidson Academy for a 4:30 game.

Tennis — Tennis will play their season opener at Kenwood Tuesday at 3:30. On Thursday they will play USN at 4PM at Dunbar Cave courts.

Track — Track will travel to USN for their season opener on Wednesday.

Soccer — Soccer will play at Creekwood at 6PM on Thursday.

CA Experience

The CA Experience program is NOW OPEN FOR REGISTRATION! CA Experience is an after school enrichment program that will focus on activities, classes, artistic lessons, sports training and so much more. Each session will run six weeks and provide a variety of opportunities for our students. These will be titled, CA Winter Experience, CA Spring Experience, CA Summer Experience and CA Fall Experience. Youth In Government

Clarksville Academy had over 30 students participate in the annual YMCA Youth in Government Conference from Thursday-Sunday of the past week. Students wrote legislative bills on a variety of topics and presented them in either the House or the Senate. Student Congressional members and Senators then voted on the presented bills. If the Senate and House passed a bill, it was sent to the student led Governor’s Cabinet and signed into YIG law by the student Governor. This was a wonderful learning opportunity for our students and CA showed up big. See below for a list of our highlights:

• Will Mabry and John Knight served on the Governor’s Cabinet
• Bella Allen and Caroline Johnston named to Leadership positions in next year’s Blue Senate—Bella will serve as Sergeant at Arms and Caroline will serve as Chief Clerk.
• Caroline Giles and Caroline Pennington passed Legislation in the Red House and were awarded Outstanding Bill in the Red House.
• Bella Allen and Caroline Johnston passed Legislation that was signed into law by the YIG Governor and were awarded Outstanding Bill in the Blue Senate.
• Zoe Drake was awarded Outstanding Delegate.
• Noah Goble and Zoe Drake also passed Legislation that was signed into law by the YIG Governor.
• Hailey Ray and Selby Shipley argued cases before the Supreme Court.
• Izzy Stapp and Haley Shannon had Legislation passed by the White Senate.
• Victoria Hilfiker and Nikki Harnage had Legislation passed by the White Senate.
• Jiya Patel, Molly Clark, and Katie Thrash had Legislation passed by the Blue House.

All of our delegates did a great job and represented CA well. Thank you to Mike Trent & Kyle Christmas for leading our students this year!

IS Cheer—Congratulations to our IS Cheer Squad for becoming National Champions over the weekend! The girls competed at the Cheer Derby in Louisville, KY on Saturday and walked away with the grand prize! We are so proud of these girls!

US Basketball— We are so proud of our Varsity Girls for making school history and competing in the elite 8 this season. Their season ended on Friday against Trinity Christian out of Jackson, but these girls have so much to be proud of. A special thanks to Coach Carrie Daniels for all her hard work this season.

IS Baseball—Intermediate School Baseball has two home games this week! Wednesday they play at home against Northeast at 6:30 and Friday they play at home against White House Heritage at 6PM. Join us at Wes Smith Field to cheer on your IS Cougars!

Cougar Scholars

Last week we announced our Val/Sal and our Top 10% of the Senior Class. We are also happy to announce our Cougar Scholars with Distinction and our Cougar Scholars. Athletics

Games this week:

US Basketball – Our varsity girls basketball team had a great weekend! On Friday they beat Nashville Christian in a tough match-up. This secured a place in the Championship game on Saturday and served as Coach Carrie Daniels’ 100th Win as Head Coach at Clarksville Academy! On Saturday the girls faced Goodpasture again and unfortunately did not come away in the top spot. They finished the Region Tournament as Runner-Ups. Another first in school history! On Tuesday, Feb 25 the girls will play CAK out of Knoxville in the first round of the State Tournament. They must win to advance to play on Friday. All Cougar Fans should make plans to be at Varsity Girls Game at 6PM on Tuesday at Procter Court! Wear your blue and gold and get loud!

Wrestling – Annalynn Rackett is the new Girls Wrestling STATE CHAMPION!!!!! Annalynn had a great showing at the Williamson County Ag Expo Center this weekend for the TSSAA Wrestling State Competition. Not only was she State Champion, but her match was also chosen by TSSAA as the best girls match of the competition. Congratulations to Annalynn on her win!

Cougar Booster Club

The Cougar Booster Club is officially taking members! This organization will benefit ALL SPORTS at Clarksville Academy and streamline our athletics fundraising process. The Cougar Booster Board has been hard at work this fall, talking with coaches, finding out what our sports need to be successful and working with Administration. Below you will find a copy of our flyer and membership levels. Cougar Club is taking both individual/family memberships and corporate memberships. National Honor/Junior National Honor Society

Over the weekend invitations were emailed to students who are eligible for the National Honor Society and the National Junior Honor Society. Students invited to this organization must fill out the application no later than February 19. Please see Mrs. Christine Lindsey (NHS) or Mrs. Christie Burger (NJHS) with questions.

National Kindness Week

During the week of February 18-21 Clarksville Academy will participate in National Kindness Week. This week will be dedicated to exploring ways our students can show kindness in their daily lives. Throughout the week, we will host themed days for our staff and students to participate in.

Monday – No School – Winter Break!

Tuesday – “What if we practice positivity? Students wear Pink or Purple for Positivity.

Wednesday – “What if we serve others? Students wear camouflage or superhero capes.

Thursday – “What if we stand up for one another?” Students wear school spirit CA shirts and jeans.

Friday – “What if we remember a gentle legend who taught us all to be neighborly?”  Students will wear a cardigan sweater honoring Mr. Rogers!

Athletics

Games this week:

US Basketball—This weekend was a great one for our basketball teams. The boys finished 3rd in the District tournament with Daniel Loos scoring his 2000th point! He was also named to the All District Tournament team. Boys travel to CPA on Wednesday! We need you there!

Our girls continue to break CA records! They won the district tournament championship! Sydneey Boykin was named District Player of the Year, Diamond Bryant MVP of the Tournament, Sydneey, Diamond, Mackayla Artis and Vana Pridgen all were named to the All District Tournament team. They will play Middle TN Christian at home tonight! Cost is $7. We need your support!!!

Wrestling –  Annalynn Rackett is the first girl in school history to advance to the State Wrestling competition. A Sophomore, Annalynn has been wrestling for two years. She got into the sport after participating in Jiu Jitsu recreationally. Her favorite part about wrestling are the bonds she has made with teammates and all the memories she has made. When asked her thoughts about wrestling, she stated, “As you wrestle, you learn new things about yourself and your limitations, you also get to create amazing bonds with the people you share your time with.” Her record is 24-2 for the season and she is the first Girls Region Champion, and State Qualifier for our school. The state wrestling tournament is different from all other sports in TSSAA. In this sport you compete against all school in Tennessee, public and private. Annalynn will face competition from across the state, many with longstanding programs. We want to wish her the best of luck as she competes Friday and Saturday. The Cougar Booster Club is officially taking members! This organization will benefit ALL SPORTS at Clarksville Academy and streamline our athletics fundraising process. The Cougar Booster Board has been hard at work this fall, talking with coaches, finding out what our sports need to be successful and working with Administration. Below you will find a copy of our flyer and membership levels. Cougar Club is taking both individual/family memberships and corporate memberships. National Kindness Week

During the week of February 18-21 Clarksville Academy will participate in National Kindness Week. This week will be dedicated to exploring ways our students can show kindness in their daily lives. Throughout the week, we will host themed days for our staff and students to participate in.

• Friday – “What if we remember a gentle legend who taught us all to be neighborly?”  Students will wear a cardigan sweater honoring Mr. Rogers!

US Basketball—Our girls team made CA History Saturday night securing their spot at regular Season District Champions!!!! This week both varsity teams begin District Tournament play. Tuesday night we will host the first round of play for the girls. Our opponent will be decided after their game tonight. Our girls advance as the number 1 seed in the tournament. We need your help! Join us Tuesday night at Procter Court at 6:00 to cheer on our girls!

Boys travel to Nashville Christian for first round play on Wednesday at 6PM.

Games this week:

IS Basketball –The IS Basketball season is winding down. Tonight our boys hit the road to Ezell Harding Academy for the first round of tournament play, if they win, they will play again on Thursday. The girls will travel to Goodpasture on Thursday for their first round of tournament play. Let’s Go Cougars!

US Basketball—The Cougars regular season will come to an end this Friday, at Goodpasture Christian. District tournament play will begin next week.

Wrestling had a great showing at the Regional tournament this weekend. Sophomore, Annalynn Rackett finished first in her weight class and will move on to the State Tournament Feb. 21-22. We are so proud of Annalynn. The team travels to the TN School for the Blind on Thursday. The Boys team will compete in their regional tournament on February 14 in Memphis.
