Robotics Finish 1st!

Our Lower School Robotics teams competed against 48 teams and finished in 1st Place over the weekend at the First Lego League State Competition at the University of Memphis. The Cyber Cubs (boys) team received 1st Place in Robot Design Strategy & Innovation while the Cougar Cubs (girls) team received 1st Place in Project Innovation Solutions. We are so proud of these students! A HUGE thank you to Mrs. Joanne Askew, Faculty Advisor and Mrs. Julie Catellier, Parent Advisor/Coach. Our teams could not have done it without you both!

Cougar Booster Club

On Saturday, February 1 during the home basketball game, the newly formed Cougar Booster Club will begin enrolling new members. Stop by our table to learn more about this wonderful organization and to secure your spot. Anyone who enrolls by May 1^st will receive membership benefits for the remainder of this school year and all of the 2020-2021 school year. Individual/Family memberships are $100.

CAPA

The CA Parent Association will host their first annual Cougar Consignment Sale on March 7 in the main gym. At this sale CAPA will accept donations of furniture, formals, maternity, and good/excellent condition clothing and shoes. We ask that no donation be over four years old. Re-Enrollment

IS Basketball –The IS Basketball season is winding down. Tonight our Cougars hit the road to Donelson Christian Academy. Let’s Go Cougars!

US Basketball—This is a busy week for our Cougars! Tonight our teams travel to McEwen, Tuesday, both teams are at home taking on Donelson Christian, Friday, they travel to Ezell Harding and finally on Saturday they return home for a match-up with Friendship Christian. Saturdays games are early beginning at 2PM and Seniors will be honored between games. Come out and show our teams some Cougar love!

Wrestling has a HOME match on Wednesday and on Saturday will travel for the DII Regional Duals. Good luck to our teams!

Bowling—Bowling had a great showing at State. We are so proud of our teams and students. Leah Hayes finished 5th in the state and was a finalist for Miss Bowler. What a great season!

Welcome New Faculty

CA would like to welcome Dr. Rebecca Turney to our staff as a part time Animal Science teacher. Dr. Turney, a local veterinarian will teach Honors Animal Science and Dual Enrollment Animal Animal Science in our Upper School. We are excited about this additional course offering!

Robotics

On Friday our Robotics team will travel to Memphis to compete in the 2020 First Lego League State Competition. This team has worked hard all year preparing and we know they will do well.

Games this week:

IS Basketball –The IS Cougars will play Harding Academy at home Wednesday, January and travel to Nashville Christian on Thursday. Good luck to our Cougars.

US Basketball—On Tuesday, 1/21 the Varsity Cougars will travel to University School of Nashville and then they return home on Friday, January 24 to take on Nashville Christian at home. We need your help—come cheer on our teams during these District games.

Wrestling will travel to Northeast on Tuesday and Battleground Academy on Thursday.

Bowling—Three bowlers, Leah Hayes, Tyler Lucas and Luke Poston will travel to Smyrna on Thursday to compete as individuals in the State Tournament. On Friday our bowling teams will begin their play in the tournament. WAY TO GO COUGARS!!!

Second Grade

Second graders finished up last semester by learning about many important people from history. As a culminating activity for their Biography project, the second graders presented very eloquent monologues of their chosen person. Dressed in character, they told about the life and times of their person from history. The audience enjoyed monologues from Walt Disney, Dolly Parton, Davy Crockett, Harriet Tubman, Lucille Ball, Jacqueline Kennedy, Julia Child, Neil Armstrong, Joan of Arc, George Washington, Black Beard, Albert Einstein, Selena Quintanilla, Jerry Rice, Clara Barton, Jane Goodall, and Jenny Lind. They did such an AMAZING job on their presentations.

Hour of Code

Clarksville Academy honored the Hour of Code in early December. The week of December 9-12 was dedicated as Computer Science Education Week.  It is scheduled in early December every year to honor Grace Hopper, a female pioneer in the field of Computer Science, whose birthday is this month.

A growing movement in the computer Science field is called THE HOUR OF CODE.

It is an international/worldwide emphasis during computer science education week encouraging all teachers and students to engage in an hour of code. There were 128,394 events registered in 2019.  835,274,092 students, and 180+ countries, participated in the events.

During our Science Labs that week K-3rd graders participated in our CA registered event.  FUSE students participated with Coach Stan Rozar along with his IS/US classes.  CA is proud to be a part of this global emphasis and participate in the HOUR OF CODE!

Winterim

Upper School Winterim: Clarksville Academy upper school students are experiencing Winterim for the first time.  Winterim is a separate academic period between semester 1 and semester 2, and students receive credit on their academic transcript. It is the centerpiece of Clarksville Academy’s commitment to experiential education.  It brings something different to our campus. Winterim is designed to challenge students to expand their knowledge beyond present experiences and to foster a life-long love of learning.  It encourages deeper, more intense faculty-student relationships as we redefine our roles as student and teacher in side-by-side endeavors.
We have faculty and students all across the globe.  They are exploring the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador, climbing Mount Everest and the Himalayas, immersing themselves in the culture of the Hawaiian Islands, backpacking and backcountry camping, and discovering the science and leadership behind Walt Disney World.  We have other groups that are immersing themselves into our local government, media and journalism, leadership and entrepreneurship, nutrition, game-development and fitness.  As we enter into this minimester, we would like to thank our students, staff, and parents for their support.

Intermediate School Winterim: Our Intermediate School team has been working and planning for the last 2 months to prepare an awesome Cougar Connections program for our students.  Students in grades 6-8 will not follow their normal class schedule for these 2 weeks.  Rather, students will be fully immersed in Advisory groups that will rotate them through many different hands on and outside the box learning activities that include visits to the Maynard Makerspace, participating in career exploration classes, team building, math exploration, self-discovery, and more.  Groups are predetermined by grade level and will be given to students on Monday, January 6th. At the end of each day, each advisory group of 10-13 students will reflect with their advisor about all that they have done.  Additionally, advisors will mentor students about topics that will help prepare them for their academics and their continued journey in middle school.  Over the course of the second semester, students will have monthly opportunities to meet with their advisor and group to continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally.

FCA

Thank you to everyone who participated in our FCA Christmas Dress Down Day. The money raised along with several donations allowed High School FCA to fulfill all of our 2019 Christmas projects! FCA would also like to thank the lower school students and teachers for decorating Christmas cards! The following is a list of our Christmas projects: St. Jude Children Hospital-$100 donation, The Smile Train-$250.00 to cover a cleft surgery for a child, two Angel Tree families, Manna Café-$100 donation, Ronald McDonald House-$100 donation,
Nursing Home-over 300 beautifully decorated cards, fruit and candy to three of our local nursing homes, Second Spoon-$25.00 donation.

Holiday Surprise

Today the Admissions Office visited our FUSE classrooms and handed out a special treat! They also attended both Intermediate & Upper School lunch where they passed out hot cocoa and donuts and got our students in the holiday spirit with Christmas carols! Another special surprise for 6-12th grade is the gift of athletic wear during exams! We appreciate all our students and thank the Admissions Office for this wonderful treat!

Exam Schedule

Winter Exams will be Tuesday, December 17-Thursday, December 19.  Exams take place 8-11:30 each day. This is for grades 6-12.

Exam Schedule is as follows:

• Monday, December 16— Review Day
• Tuesday, December 17— 1st and 2nd Periods
• Wednesday, December 18–3rd and 4th Periods
• Thursday, December 19— 5th and 6th Periods

The Lower School Christmas Program will be held on Wednesday, December 18 at Noon on Procter Court.  Lower School students will be dismissed following the program and will not report on Thursday.  We ask that lower school parents do not arrive before 11:30 for the program. We will dismiss IS & US students at 11:15 and want to have time for the traffic to clear.

• 6th Grade Basketball will travel to Mt. Juliet Christian on Thursday at 6:30.
• IS Basketball will take the week off with no games this week.
• US Basketball will play at home on Friday against Silverdale. Please note a time change for this game. Girls tip at 4 and boys at 5:30.
• Wrestling will travel to Northwest on Thursday, Dec 19 for a meet at 4:30.

HOBY Leadership Academy

Each year Clarksville Academy is allowed to select Clarksville Academy Sophomores to represent our school at the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) Seminar. In June 2020, Caroline Johnston, Graysie Harper and Bella Allen will represent Clarksville Academy at APSU.

HOBY is the nation’s foremost youth leadership development organization. HOBY programs provide youth with unique leadership training to make a better world.  The seminar allows students to recognize their leadership talents and apply them in becoming effective, ethical leaders in their home, school, and community.  Congratulations to these students!

Robotics Club

The FLL Regional Tournament was held on Saturday, Dec 7 from 8:00 – 5:00, at the CMCSS Central Services Building.  12 Regional Teams representing schools from Montgomery County competed.  Our CA Robotics teams Cyber Cougars and Cougar Cubs, competed, and won Back to Back years qualifying and moving on to the State Tournament.  The Cyber Cougars (Jack Catellier, Jay Patel, Aaron Gilman, Chase McCowen, Ben Holland, Clark Holland, and Landon Lamm) placed 3rd in the Robotics Mission executions, and the CA Cougar Cubs (Cammie Johnston, Parker Kent, Carmen Skaggs, Liya Abubucker, Madelynn Turney, and Ellie Thomas) placed 5th.  Our LS teams competed placing higher than many of the school participants.  Of the 12 teams participating, only 3 teams represented elementary level schools!  There are 3 components to the competition: Robotics, Innovation Project, Core Values.  Our CA Cougar Cubs also won the award presentation for Core Values presentation (back to back years!) . We are supremely proud of our Robotics Teams!

Spirit Night

Dr. Booth’s Leadership Class is sponsoring a Chick-Fil-A Night on Wednesday, Dec 11 from 4:30-7:30 at the Chick-Fil A on Wilma Rudolph! To participate, just download the Chick-Fil-A app, place a mobile order during the above time, and click prepare my order when you arrive! It’s that easy! You can dine in or carry out! A percentage of your purchase will benefit the Leadership Classes’ charity of choice, The Well.

Home Game Fun

Dr. Booth’s Leadership Class will also host a contest during the home basketball game on Thursday night. At the game you can purchase a ticket for $5 and choose to be entered to win gift cards for Chick-Fil-A or City Forum or you can put your name in for a drawing to compete in a shoot out competition. The winner of the competition will earn Chick-Fil-A for a YEAR!!!! All proceeds from this event will benefit The Well.

Winter Carnival

We had a wonderful Winter Carnival on Saturday! A huge thank you to the parents, students, teachers and volunteers who made it a success! Thank you to Kerri Mace for chairing this event for our school!

Lower School Literacy Day

We hope you were able to view the library Friday during our annual Lower School Literacy Day. Lisa Wilson, Dana Procter and their team of students really brought Frosty the Snowman to life! Thank you to Gina Goostree, Dana, & Lisa for planning such a special event for our students and to all the IS & US students who offered their time and talents as artists and actors. Also thank you to Mr. Alan Austin for reading our story, and to Melinda Parker, Gina Goostree, Jennifer Hinote, and a variety of students for acting the story out throughout the morning.

Athletics

Our Bowling Teams are STATE BOUND! Congratulations to this wonderful group of students! Both our boys and girls teams will compete in the state tournament in January. We also have three individuals who qualified—Leah Hayes, Luke Poston and Tyler Lucas. We wish all of these athletes good luck!

Clarksville Academy’s varsity boys basketball team traveled to Columbia, Missouri to participate in the Norm Stewart Classic.  The Classic was hosted by Southeastern Conference member the University of Missouri.  Norm Stewart is a legendary coach at the University of Missouri, and compiled 731 career wins in nearly 40 years as a head coach. Coach Stewart is a member of the University of Missouri Hall of Fame.  While in Columbia, the Cougars had the opportunity to tour the campus, the basketball and athletic facilities. Clarksville Academy was the only team in 48 straight hours of basketball, to play two games in the classic.  On Friday evening, the Cougars fell to East Buchanon High School out of Kansas City, Missouri 48-35.  On Saturday, Clarksville Academy rebounded with a thrilling win over Hickman High School out of Columbia, Missouri, 48-45.  Daniel Loos was named the Most Valuable Player of Saturday’s game, pouring in a game high, 32 points.  Both games were televised nationally on the ESPN App.

Games this week:

6th Grade Basketball kicks off their season this week! Thursday, they travel to Davidson Academy for their first game taking place at 5. On Saturday they take on Davidson at home at 1PM on Procter Court.

IS Basketball takes on Mt. Juliet Christian at HOME tonight-Girls tip at 6 and boys at 7. They travel to Harding Academy on Wednesday with JV at 5, Girls at 6 and boys at 7. Finally they return home on Friday, Dec 13 to take on Nashville Christian with the girls at 6 and boys at 7.

US Basketball will play at home on Tuesday vs. Mt. Juliet Christian with JV at 4:30, girls at 6 and boys at 7:30. Jr Cheer will be at this game! Thursday our teams play University School of Nashville at home with a time change—girls tip at 4 and boys at 5:30. Friday our teams travel to Nashville Christian with JV at 4:15, girls at 6 and boys at 7:30.

Wrestling will travel to Friendship Christian on Tuesday, Dec 10 for a meet at 4:30, and on Thursday will be at Franklin Road for a 4:30 meet.

Yesterday you should have received your invitation to Thanksgiving lunch on Monday, November 25. We ask that you print the invitation and return the bottom form with your payment to Kristi Truitt by Nov 18. Lost & Found

The Lost and Found is getting full! We ask that students look through the items this week. If you are missing something please stop by the gym and see if we have it. Lost and Found will be donated at the end of next week. Thank you.

YAIPAKS Cold Weather Drive

Be Hope, Bring Joy. For kids by kids

YAIpaks Outreach is an amazing local organization that helps the homeless in our area. Next week CAPA and CA Interact will team up to collect winter items for needy children in our area. Items needed are coats, winter children’s clothing, and winter pajamas. We are also looking to collect NEW socks for both boys and girls (all sizes) and little girl underwear. We will take coats in all sizes, but need winter clothing items in children’s sizes. We look forward to your help in stocking their closets before it’s gets winter!! Donations can be brought to CA the week of November 12-15. More information will be sent via the CAPA email this week!

Intermediate & Upper School Head of School Search

Last week we posted the positions of Intermediate and Upper School Head of School. This will be a regional search for both positions. Our goal is to have the permanent positions filled before the end of the year. We have been fortunate to have Mrs. Denise Walker (Upper School) and Mrs. Alicia McQueen (Intermediate School) act as Interim in these positions for the past few months. Both ladies have said they will apply for the permanent positions. Job descriptions and information on how to apply can be found on our website under Career Opportunities.

Weather Postings

It’s only November and already we have had a snow day! As a reminder to all families, snow day announcements or late notices will be posted on our main home page (across the top as an alert), on all social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram & Snapchat), sent via email and posted on all Nashville area stations.

Model UN

We had 28 students travel to Murfreesboro to compete in the Model United Nations event sponsored by the YMCA. This year Clarksville Academy was fortunate enough to have two students serve as officers, Will Mabry served as VP of the General Assembly, while Lily Butler served as Justice on the International Court. The team of Garrett Burger, Shaun Patel, Elvis Smith, and Daniel Loos received the honor of Top 10 Outstanding Bill. Bella Allen, Caroline Johnston and Hadley Wilson’s bill was sent to the Summit and was recommended to the General Assembly.

Giving

Annual Giving is set to kick off very soon! We hope your family will support this important campaign. Annual Giving is used to offset the overall budget for those things not covered by tuition alone and is also used for focus areas. We’ve set aside 5 areas of focus this year and hope you will consider supporting them. Watch your mailbox for more information!

CA has always used the box tops label program to earn extra money for our school. We have been so lucky in the past for all your support for the program. Over the years we have earned thousands of dollars for our school. This year it is even easier! Simply download the Box Tops for Education app from the app store, pick Clarksville Academy as your school and start scanning your receipts! It’s as easy as that! So start scanning!

Did you know you can register your Kroger Plus for CA? Every time you use your Kroger Plus card a portion of your bill will be credited to CA! It’s that easy! Go online to Kroger.com and register today!

YearBook

If you have pictures you’d like considered for possible inclusion in the 19-20 yearbook, download the Replay It app and send photos our way. Set up is simple. You can always email your photos to any member of the yearbook staff, but the app saves quite a few steps and makes our staff more efficient.

As always, every student receives a yearbook as part of their tuition and fees. This year, students are able to get personalization on their yearbook cover for a small fee. You can order this for your
student(s) at Jostens.com. From their website, search for our school and select yearbook. You should be able to order and pay for personalization there. If you have any questions, please feel free to email ldrake@clarksvilleacademy.com

FCA

Fellowship of Christian Athletes is every Wednesday for ALL Intermediate & Upper School students. You do not have to be involved in athletics to attend. Intermediate School will be in Coach Trent’s room. Upper School in Mr. Boyd’s room 117 under the gym.
