Clarksville Academy Students Improve the Health and Fitness of Clarksville

Clarksville, Tennessee… Clarksville Academy Challenge Based Learning students continue to work to improve not only the Clarksville community, but also the residents’ lives as well. On Friday, September 25, 2015 CA students will join Montgomery County officials for the official ribbon cutting of the new outdoor fitness center at Rotary Park. The ceremony begins at 9:30 a.m. and is open to the public.

Over the course of the past three years, twenty Clarksville Academy students ages fourteen to eighteen have worked to improve the health and fitness of Clarksville. Students have secured grant funding from the Community Health Foundation to add outdoor fitness equipment to three parks. This equipment is designed for all fitness levels and is free to the public.

Liberty Park was the first park to receive the outdoor equipment. During the year following the installation, students visited the park during various days of the week and times of the day to see what equipment was most used, who was using it, and when it was being used. This fitness area has been so successful that the Greenway and Rotary Park were added.

Clarksville Academy students secured a grant for $51,790, which funded the installation of equipment at both the Greenway and Rotary Park. Greenway had five pieces of equipment installed, including an abs and dip station, arms and back combo station, and a lower body combo station. Rotary Park had nine pieces installed, including a chest press, leg press, up right cycle and a push up station. All equipment is free to use and open to the public.

Montgomery County Government recently received a Local Government Award from the Greater Nashville Regional Council for the fitness area at Rotary Park. Representatives from both Montgomery County and Clarksville Academy were on hand to receive the award.

For more information on Clarksville Academy or the Challenge Based Learning program please visit www.clarksvilleacademy.com.

Clarksville Academy Gives Back

Clarksville Academy celebrated Homecoming this week.  During their annual spirit week, the students take part in a variety of activities such as dress up days, spirit competitions between grade levels, and the annual color wars and door design competitions.  This year, CA students wanted to enhance their spirit week by adding a new component.  Students were asked to incorporate items that could be donated into their color wars or door competition designs.  These items would be given to local agencies here in the Clarksville community.  The Cougar family embraced this new addition and donated over 1,000 household items such as canned goods and personal hygiene products.  Not only did they collect over 1,000 items, but over 70 pairs of shoes were also donated!  The Class of 2020 took it a step further and incorporated the American Cancer Society into their pink theme.  They collected $250 to be given to the ACS.  All items were presented to the local Manna Café & Salvation Army during Friday’s Pep Assembly.  A check for $250 was presented to CA’s Student Council President and will be sent to ACS.

Homecoming

What an amazing week! Thank you to everyone who donated items, dressed up, decorated doors, decorated color wars & fence designs, bought homecoming shirts, participated in the pep rally, donated time and items to our annual hayride/bonfire and came to the game to cheer on our Homecoming Court and Football team! You all did an amazing job!

Due to your generosity we were able to donate over 1,000 canned goods and household items as well as 25lbs of meat and over 70 pairs of shoes to Manna Café and Salvation Army! We also donated $250 to the American Cancer Society! This was a wonderful thing for our students to participate in. We thank each of you who took part!

Mrs. Moore’s Atom Game

In this game, small groups used colored poker chips to represent electrons, protons, and neutrons. They roll the dice to find the element they will work with and then take a card to find how they need to modify the element. The team to correctly create the most isotopes, ions and neutral atoms by the end of class wins the game. Honors Chemistry used this game to review for an upcoming test.
