7th Grade

In 7th grade English, students have been reading Flowers for Algernon and a nonfiction text about a family’s decision to keep their disabled daughter small through medical intervention. Through the course of this unit, students have focused on pulling text evidence, evaluating the ethical choices of each text, and comparing the perspectives of authors. We have reached the middle of Flowers for Algernon, and in lieu of a quiz, students participated in a Socratic seminar. This activity requires students to prepare both their own thoughts and questions for classmates and helps students sharpen their speaking and listening skills. During the activity, the teacher acts solely as a mediator and observers students are encouraged to take the lead in directing the conversation and holding their peers accountable. At the conclusion of each class, all students were surprised at the maturity and sophistication of their peers and have expressed a desire to do another seminar soon.
