1st Grade

You are Invited to the First Grade Pet Show!!!

2nd Grade

Second graders presented their Leaf Projects. The students collected and identified at least 10 leaves. They designed a booklet to display their collection. Many students gathered leaves as they traveled during Fall Break. The students’ collections included leaves from Tennessee, North Carolina, and Washington.

PE

Lower School had a ball with the parachute!!!!

3rd grade

The third graders have been enjoyed learning about our country’s history.  Each student chose a patriotic person from our past to research.  They used their creativity to turn a pumpkin into this character. We all learned a great deal about our history.

The third grade classes enjoyed the dental presentation by Dr. Grimes and his staff.   After the presentation they provided our classes with a delicious lunch. A big thank you to About Faces and Braces.

Third grade students just wrapped up their STEM Challenge entitled “Solve It:  Helping Animals (Caribou) Migrate”.  Students asked themselves “How can you design a model (prototype) to allow caribou to safely migrate?”  Students thought about a real life problem, (how a busy highway is being constructed blocking one of the main caribou migration routes).  Students followed specific steps of the Engineering Design Process and researched, explored new content, worked in collaborative groups, created a blueprint design, constructed a bridge and/or tunnel, tested then finally worked to improve their design.  After completing the Create stage of the Engineering Design Process, we tested their bridges/tunnels and recorded data to show which were strongest (applying weight with large paperclips).  The blue ribbons indicate the strongest bridges/tunnels from each third class class.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten made Creepy Cats for our study on the letter Cc. Aren’t they Cute???

FUSE

FUSE Social Studies students shared the things they enjoyed learning most about during their American Revolution unit, by creating digital web organizers on their iPads.

Fine Arts Night

Fine Arts Night was a huge success.  Thank you to all who came out to support our Fine Arts programs!

Varsity Cheer & Dance

Congratulations to the Varsity Cheer and Dance Teams were invited to participate in the APSU Homecoming Parade on Saturday.

Animal Science

Animal Science had a great time last week on our field trip. Mr Brandon Butts, veterinarian technician at Animal House Vet Clinic, took the students on a tour of the facility. The students were able to view the large and small animal treatment areas, view a mobile vet truck, surgery room, x-ray room, patient kennels, and boarding kennels. While at the clinic some animals were receiving treatment, to include 2 dogs that had been attacked, a dental treatment, a cat being prepped for surgery, and a horse with a nosebleed. At the end of the tour the owner brought in a lame cow. The students were allowed to view the examination and diagnosis. The cow was placed in a flip chute, which allows the medical staff and animal to be treated in a safe environment. The cow had a rock embedded in her hoof, which had caused an abscess to form. The rock was removed and the hoof will be treated with medication. Dr. Cory Goodlette and Vet. Tech,Candace Swaffer, were the attending medical staff for the cow. Candace is a graduate of Clarksville Academy.

Fine Arts Night

Fine Arts Night was a huge success.  Thank you to all who came out to support our Fine Arts programs!

iLink

Our Intermediate School iLink Day for October was a grand success!  The day was filled with team-building activities and innovative interdisciplinary projects.
One exciting and much loved activity had all iLink teams taking part in a STEM Challenge while being guided by their faculty mentors. Each iLink team had to work together to construct a catapult that would have the ability to launch a small pumpkin (Pumpkin Chuckin’) with team points earned for distance and accuracy of design. Limited resources and time constraints provided the perfect analogy to the global workplace and how team members must work collaboratively in order to garner success. Teams worked quickly to devise a strategy while managing the clock to ensure there was sufficient time for designing, building, and testing their creations. Once the teams completed their catapults, all teams gathered at the launch area. Each team had the opportunity to launch 3 times with measures for distance and durability of the catapults. Awards were given for Greatest Distance, Most Unique Design, and Most Team Spirit.  Congratulations to Coach Hughes’ group!

Science News

First graders completed a STEM challenge and incorporated the EDP (Engineering Design Process).  Focusing on their current unit of study – Animals, corresponding with their upcoming FIRST GRADE PET SHOW, they created cages for Gummy Bears!

Students designed cages (creating working models) and built them using dry spaghetti strands and mini marshmallows.  They tested their designs (evaluating their designs) altering the structures, when needed, to improve stability.

Science Lab

Third graders continue their study of How are Animals classified, and What Body parts provide Support.  Working through the Engineering Design Process, as they completed their STEM challenge, we observed actual animal spinal columns and vertebrae.  After exploring existing designs, students designed their own models of vertebral columns using wheel macaroni for vertebrae, and soft gummy savers for discs. They threaded them on kabob skewers.  While evaluating their models, they determined that they did not accurately represent actual spinal columns.  To improve their design, they used flexible pipe cleaners, which provide movement for the spines.

Second graders completed a STEM challenge in Science Lab.  They have recently completed their lesson on How far can different things Move? We investigated how angles and ramps affect motion.  We used an effervescent launcher and change the angles to measure distances traveled.  We varied the amounts of water and effervescent tablets to see the effects. Students also “launched” their own film canisters.

Fine Arts Night

Fine Arts Night was a huge success.  Thank you to all who came out to support our Fine Arts programs!

Field Trip

Kindergarten enjoyed their annual trip to Patterson Place Farm.

2nd Grade

Throughout the week, the second grade students created a writing piece describing their favorite thing about fall. The students practiced the writing process by brainstorming, creating a rough draft, revising, and editing their work. The students explored their creativity as they created an illustration to go along with their writing.

FUSE

4/5 FUSE students enjoyed a visit from children’s book author and publisher, Cathleen Roach. During the visit the students learned about her journey as a writer, as well as the process of publishing a book.  Mrs. Roach shared her newest book, Ike Has a Fright, with the students.

Math Lab

Second grade Students worked on adding multiples of 10 to two, three, and four-digit numbers.   They wrote their problems on leaves. These second graders are falling for good math during this autumn season!

Third grade students used skittles to organize their data on a tally table.  They tallied skittle flavors.  Then, they used the data to graph horizontal bar graphs and also vertical bar graphs.  It was a fun, edible activity in Math Lab!
