Modern Brush Calligraphy

Mrs. Morgan James has a love for hand lettering.  In this class you will learn all the basics of Modern Calligraphy. We will focus on technique and connection of letters, how to mix and match fonts and how to properly use different calligraphy tools. This course will include a small chalkboard, 2 brush pens, 1 ornament (we will letter on this during class) and a set of practice sheets. The class will run from November 14-December 7.  Students can choose either a Tuesday or Thursday option and class will take place from 3:30-4:30 in Mrs. Morgan James’ room. Open to 6th grade through adult.

Mrs. Dirksen is excited to announce a new offering in the Cafeteria!  She will host a “Christmas Gifts from the Kitchen” after school enrichment course from December 4-December 8.  Students will report to the kitchen from 3:00-5:00 PM.  All ingredients and supplies will be provided and students will make 10 Christmas gifts in a jar!  This fun-filled activity will provide you with great gifts for your loved ones!   Students will get to taste test each day’s project.  They will receive a recipe book and bag for all their goodies!  This class is open to 4^th-7^th graders and is available to only 20 students.  The cost is $100.

This is a reminder that CA collects Box Tops through our CAA.  The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects.  Last year we raised over $3000 through the Box Tops program alone!  Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.

1^st grade

Twas the day before Thanksgiving, eight boys and girls take a field trip to a turkey farm. They have fun playing with eight exuberant turkeys, but are shocked to learn that Farmer Mack Nuggett plans to kill all the turkeys for Thanksgiving dinners. So the children decide to smuggle all the turkeys home, and all their Thanksgiving dinners become vegetarian this year. The turkeys’ lives are saved!
After reading this fun and wacky story with our students, we brainstormed ideas of what we could eat instead of turkey. We then compiled a list using commas to separate each item. Make sure you check out our turkey display in the hallway.

 

2^nd Grade

Second graders worked with their classmates to compete STEM activities. The students used team work to put their ideas to life as they used cardboard, toothpicks, paper, pipe cleaners, and tape to construct

a covered wagon. The students reflected on their work to determine how their product was successful and which ideas were their best. The students will test their covered wagons to determine which wagon can hold the most weight.

 

FUSE

5th grade FUSE Writing students worked with partners to learn more about athletes from their favorite sport of choice. Once completing their research, they will work to develop a writing and technology piece to asses and share their learning.

Robotics

The Robotics Team visited the Woodlawn Fire Dept on Wednesday as part of our Hydrodynamics Project to research problem and solution to transportation of water in fire rescue.

Latin Team

Classics Day at Austin Peay was a great success. 54 CA Latin students attended with about 200 other Clarksville area Latin students.

In Certamen (Latin Bowl), the Latin 1 team placed 3rd, the Latin 2 team placed 3rd, and the Latin 3 team placed 2nd.

In the Heptathlon test, Tabitha Lee was 2nd place out of the Latin 3 students who attended.

Congratulations to these students for all their hard work!

 

 

Soccer

We are pleased to announce that Kaden Cobb, 8th Grader at Clarksville Academy, has been designated as an “All-Star” in the Montgomery County Soccer Association girls middle school league for the 2017 Fall season.  Her advanced playing skills set her apart from her peers.  She was formally recognized on November 8, 2017 just after the final game of the season.

STATE CROSS COUNTRY

Stone Norris finished 17th in the Division II Class A TSSAA Cross Country Championship with a time of 18:15. Great job Stone!

 

Model UN

Clarksville Academy was well represented with 37 delegates at this year’s Model United Nations Annual Conference held in Murfreesboro on November 3-5. With 1,000 students from all over Tennessee in attendance, this conference was the biggest yet. The countries of Brunei Darussalam [Will Mabry, Macy Truitt, Georgia Smith and Daniel Loos] and Latvia [Maggie Clark, Cheyenne Deibert, Brennen Morrow and Ben Truex]  had their resolutions ranked favorably enough in Committee on Friday to make it on Saturday’s docket in the General Assembly. Brunei’s resolution 17-7-4 was for the Colonization of the Earth’s Moon and Latvia’s resolution 17-2-3 was A Resolution to Encourage Discussion Regarding State Use of Information and Communication Technologies. Both of these resolutions came up for debate and Latvia’s resolution was passed by the Red General Assembly. At Sunday’s award ceremony Cheyenne Deibert was recognized for receiving an Outstanding Delegate Award and the Dominica team of Rosie Robinson, TJ Jenkins, Jason Herlick and Hunter Kueter received an Outstanding Resolution Award for their resolution 17-4-19 which was A Resolution to Improve Education in Developing World Countries.

Anatomy

This week honors anatomy students used hand dynometer sensors with a Vernier interface to record grip and pinch strength in Newtons.  Students determined the effect of gender, height, and handedness on grip strength.

Drama

The Intermediate Drama Class completed their fun mask project last week. The history of using home made masks in performance goes back to the earliest humans, and enhanced their appreciation of the process and the tradition.

Mrs. Pitt’s Intermediate Drama Class attended “A Midsummer Night’s Dream: The Musical” at the Roxy on Monday, Nov. 6th. It was a blast!! 

 

English

Mrs. Burkhart’s 8th grade English class took part in a “Comma Escape Room” activity. Students had to work together to solve each station’s challenges involving correct comma usage. The escape answer codes were then added to a Google Form in order to escape!

LBL

Fifth graders recently returned from the annual trip to the Land Between the Lakes.  On Nov. 1-3, students visited the Woodlands Nature Station, the Brandon Spring Group Center, and The Homeplace 1850 Farm.  Students participated in a variety of activities including interacting with local wildlife, archery, tracking animal signs, canoeing, a pond study, orienteering, building a wilderness survival shelter, a night hike, a bonfire, and exploring life on a farm in the year 1850.  Students were immersed in nature as they applied concepts of science and math, learned the history of the area, and completed reading and writing activities about life in the 1850’s.  This 3-day trip is an adventure-filled experience allowing students to go off the grid, practice team building and communication skills, enjoy yummy home cooked meals, and enjoy learning to the fullest extent.  A special thanks to our parent chaperones who were a critical part of making this a successful trip – Tricia Wallace, Winnetka Gray, Dr. Rebecca Turney, Travis Janssen, Marc Maxwell, Alex Ozolins, Ben Moore, Bryce Powers, Dr. Deborah Hellums, and Chris Wofford.

 

1st Grade

The First Grade Pet Show was a great success!  Thank you to our teachers, Mrs. Lynn & Mrs. Lindsey for all their hard work.  

2nd Grade

Second grade students began working on STEM projects. The students worked in small groups to design covered wagons and small toys. They will continue to work in their groups to construct the covered wagons and small toys from given supplies. Once completed, the students will present their products to the class.

Science News

In conjunction with our First grade pet show., First graders study animal habitats.  They compared 8 different habitats/ecosystems and identified animals that live in them – Arctic, Antarctic, Savannah, Oceans, Ponds, Caves, Forests, and Rainforests.

Second graders created a grid pattern and stamped 16 different animal tracks as they begin their study of Animals.  We compared and contrasted animal paw prints and animal hoof prints, noting similarities and differences.  We had plaster casts of animal prints and matched them with identification sheets.

Third graders used different items to simulate bird beaks.  Tweezers represented finch, cardinal, and pigeon beaks. Golf tees represented woodpecker beaks.  Pipettes represented hummingbird eating styles. We discussed animal adaptations, and features that help animals survive in their environments.

 

3rd Grade

Mrs. Williams’ third grade class just finished reading the book, The BFG. They celebrated by having a BGF Party complete with “Frobscottle” and “Snozzcumners.” All had a. Whopsy time!!!

Third grade collected and compared data in each class using students’ height (in inches).  They created a tally table of data using height measurements and recorded each student’s height.  Students used their collected data to create a class line plot.

 

FUSE

4th grade FUSE Students FaceTimed with Beethoven in music class, learning about his life and important lessons he had to share.

In Science, fifth graders were challenged to build a “Bone Bridge” as part of a STEM Halloween activity. Students worked together to come up with a plan, draw a design, and decide on supplies. Groups competed to build a free-standing bridge that could hold up to 15 candy pumpkins.

Fourth grade FUSE students completed a Candy Corn Tower Challenge on Halloween in Science class. Groups competed to see who could build the tallest tower out of candy corn and toothpicks in just 15 minutes! Students worked together to plan and draw their design before beginning to work. After the work was done, they discussed ways to improve their initial designs. 

 

Eye Exams

On Tuesday, November 7, 2017, we will be offering a vision screening for all Lower School students. The screening will consist of a visual acuity check and a basic assessment for binocularity (ruling out eye turns/lazy eye). Dr. Jackson from Sango Eye Care will provide this complimentary service to the school on our campus. If consent is given it is not required that a parent/guardian be present for their child’s vision screening. A vision screening report will be sent home with your child. This is a great opportunity for our students and we encourage you to sign up no later than Friday, November 3, 2017. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me.

 

Modern Brush Calligraphy

Mrs. Morgan James has a love for hand lettering.  In this class you will learn all the basics of Modern Calligraphy. We will focus on technique and connection of letters, how to mix and match fonts and how to properly use different calligraphy tools. This course will include a small chalkboard, 2 brush pens, 1 ornament (we will letter on this during class) and a set of practice sheets. The class will run from November 14-December 7.  Students can choose either a Tuesday or Thursday option and class will take place from 3:30-4:30 in Mrs. Morgan James’ room. Open to 6th grade through adult.  $30.00 Supplies, $15 per class

Mrs. Dirksen is excited to announce a new offering in the Cafeteria!  She will host a “Christmas Gifts from the Kitchen” after school enrichment course from December 4-December 8.  Students will report to the kitchen from 3:00-5:00 PM.  All ingredients and supplies will be provided and students will make 10 Christmas gifts in a jar!  This fun-filled activity will provide you with great gifts for your loved ones!   Students will get to taste test each day’s project.  They will receive a recipe book and bag for all their goodies!  This class is open to 4th-7th graders and is available to only 20 students.  The cost is $100.

Model UN

Clarksville Academy was well represented with 37 delegates at this year’s Model United Nations Annual Conference held in Murfreesboro on November 3-5. With 1,000 students from all over Tennessee in attendance, this conference was the biggest yet. The countries of Brunei Darussalam [Will Mabry, Macy Truitt, Georgia Smith and Daniel Loos] and Latvia [Maggie Clark, Cheyenne Deibert, Brennen Morrow and Ben Truex]  had their resolutions ranked favorably enough in Committee on Friday to make it on Saturday’s docket in the General Assembly. Brunei’s resolution 17-7-4 was for the Colonization of the Earth’s Moon and Latvia’s resolution 17-2-3 was A Resolution to Encourage Discussion Regarding State Use of Information and Communication Technologies. Both of these resolutions came up for debate and Latvia’s resolution was passed by the Red General Assembly. At Sunday’s award ceremony Cheyenne Deibert was recognized for receiving an Outstanding Delegate Award and the Dominica team of Rosie Robinson, TJ Jenkins, Jason Herlick and Hunter Kueter received an Outstanding Resolution Award for their resolution 17-4-19 which was A Resolution to Improve Education in Developing World Countries.

Babysitting Certification using the Red Cross certification training and hands on experience with diapering training, basic first aid, and basic cooking skills.

CBL October 20, 2017

Each of our 10 groups continue with the Investigation portion of their Essential Questions.  Groups conferred with Guiding Resources (experts in their designated fields), they visited sites, met with community leaders, conducted surveys, had guest speakers and engaged in guiding activities as each group narrows its scope – and defines their Challenges.

Our Health and Fitness group (Hardison/Lindsey) continues the data collection portion of their work.  Survey questions were compiled and community members polled to determine specific areas of interest regarding Health/Fitness.

The Mentoring Group (Christmas/Burroughs) visited APSU meeting with representatives from the APSU 1000 Peer Leader program.   The peer leaders described the program and students then asked their panel questions to gain further insight into the topic.  They returned to CA and moved forward with their Guiding Questions as they investigate other independent schools with successful mentoring programs.

Literacy, facilitated by Ms. Stonesifer, had a guest speaker from the Montgomery County Adult Literacy Council.  The group then visited the Ajax Turner Senior Citizens Center.  They delivered donations of current magazines for the program participants, and toured the facility as part of investigating their program for the visually impaired.

The students in the Clarksville Culture and Heritage group (Beach/Trent) visited the Custom House Museum focusing on an exhibit that recounts histories of leaders and people of note from the Clarksville area.  The students worked with interactive learning devices, watched videos, and read information detailing the background of some of the characters in The Montgomery County Chronicles: A Tribute to History, Community, and Leadership Stage Play-Created By Shana Thornton.  Mayor Jim Durrett spoke to the group regarding this project, and the importance of communicating the history of our county.

Our Food Production Group (Boyd/Walker) utilized a portion of their day to finalize plans for their booth at Fall Festival.  They designed and printed labels for their Salsa, which will be sold at their booth.  Tomatoes in the salsa (canned on our Sept CBL day) were harvested, in part, from the Brandon Hills Community Garden.  The proceeds collected will be used by this group as they continue to work in multiple areas of Food Production.

Food Security (Burkhart/Bragg) and Team Boyardee, designed and purchased T-shirts on our last CBL day.  The team visited Manna Cafe to assist with food distribution, then returned to campus to finalize plans for their Fall Festival booth.  They made plans to volunteer at Loaves and Fishes in November, and have made bread donations to The Well.

Team Neitkze’s Natural Beauties has begun work on the Humane Society recycling bin.  They began the cleaning process, initiated the priming process, and designed the images for the final stage. They made donations of cat supplies for the Humane Society office, and were visited on site by the director Amy Shaver.

Coach Magrans’ Recreation Group visited the Disc Golf Course to review the final construction phases of Holes 9-18.  They submitted their Grant Followup Report.  They returned to school and began plans for hosting an upcoming event at the course, as part of the grand opening of Rotary Park’s Back 9 of the 18 Hole Disc Golf Course.

Construction 101 (Moore)  spent the Sept CBL day familiarizing themselves with a variety of tools.  This month the group was visited by Home Depot Representatives who conducted a demonstration on laying ceramic tiles.  Group members were able to lay their own tiles – grouting, measuring, and cutting tiles.  The group is investigating CA construction projects as part of their Challenge.

Our Performing Arts group (Hollis/Pitt) divided into teams and spent the day making preparations to visit the USO on the FT. Campbell Army Base on our Nov CBL day.  At the upcoming event the groups will work with preschool children of military families featuring: Arts and Crafts, Story Time (with acting), and Song Time.

Spooky Bus

Mr. Neitzki’s Upper School art students were invited to continue the tradition of painting a Clarksville Transit System bus.  They students  travelled to the city bus system to paint the Spooky Bus on Friday.  This was one of the best yet!

 

AP Biology

AP Biology conducted a lab called “Cell Membrane Bubble Lab”. Bubbles make a great stand in for cell membranes due to being flexible, fluid, and able to self-repair. The students used the bubbles to demonstrate several properties and characteristics of the cell membrane.

Fall Festival

Thank you to all who participated in or helped with the Fall Festival!  It was a huge success and we can’t thank you enough!  A big thank you to Kerri Mace & Nicole Williamson for Co-Chairing Fall Festival.  We truly appreciate all their hard work!

 

Juniors/Seniors

Jostens will be on campus Tuesday, October 31, 2017, from 11:45 A.M. until 1:20 P.M. taking class ring and jewelry orders as well as senior announcements, cap & gown, and memorabilia orders.  They will be set up in the library.
