iLink News

Intermediate iLink students spent the morning learning about literacy issues in our community and our Country. We had two special guest speakers that shared statistics and information on the literacy issues being faced in our society. Our students will be visiting Burt Elementary fourth grade classes on April 24 in an effort to further promote literacy in our community. Each CA student will bring a chapter book and a goody snack bag to leave with their new friend. CA students will read a summary of the book that they have written in their English class as well read the first few pages in an effort to encourage reading the book. Today, our students decorated the snack bags we will be taking with quotes on literacy and filled them with goodies.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten classes had a great time telling about themselves through the kindergarten kite glyph activity.  Each student’s kite shows their favorite season, their age, gender, favorite sport, and favorite animal. Using the instructions in the picture below, the students worked independently to complete their kite.

3rd grade

Third grade students created Keynote presentations and flip books to show their knowledge of the Solar System to include the Sun, Inner & Outer planets and the Asteroid Belt.  Students presented these to the class along with interesting facts they learned.

Third graders concluded their unit on weather.  We created the water cycle using domed weather discs.  Applying ice, we noted the “atmospheric” changes in our disc models.

Science Lab

Second graders continue their investigations in Space.  We created Sundials. Using flashlights acting as the sun, we noted the changes in the position of the shadow and shadow length.

First Graders continue their study of Matter.  This week we explored liquids and added solids to observe the effects.  We used hydrophobic sand.  We observed the qualities of the sand when submerged in the water, and when the sand is removed from the liquid.

Math Lab

Students in third grade used crackers and squares of paper to learn how to write and add fractions. They changed improper fractions to mixed numbers. They ate their fractions after the activity!

Spelling Bee

The Clarksville Academy Intermediate School Spelling Bee was held today on Procter Court. Fourteen students competed from grades sixth through eighth. Students were taken through eight rounds were provided by the Scripps National Spelling List.

This was no mundane spelling bee. Students battled it out over words such as melodramatic, electrode, cumulus and the ever elusive esoteric. Students were offered a definition or use in a sentence for those needing it.

Seventh grade student Graysie Harper battled until the end, leaving the bee in the eighth round on the word resilience. Seventh grade student, Annalynn Rakett also held on exiting during the eighth round on the word infrastructure.

Madison Harris, an eighth grade student won the bee on the word philharmonic, which means relating to a symphony or orchestra.

Congratulations to all participants in today’s bee. Our top spellers for each class were, Zoe Drake, sixth Grade, Graysie Harper, seventh Grade, and eighth grader Madison Harris.

Q & U Wedding

The invitations were sent, the reception planned, and the Queens and Quarterbacks were dressed for the ceremony! The Annual Q & U Wedding was held on Clarksville Academy’s campus on Thursday, March 16. Over 44 Queens and Quarterbacks walked down the aisle to signify the marriage of Q&U. This annual ceremony serves as a reminder to our Kindergarten students that Q and U go together to make words.
The Q&U Wedding is an annual tradition for CA dating back over ten years. The wedding serves as an interactive grammar lesson. Students are reminded that Q and U work together to make words like quandary and quarrel but that U can stand alone for words like underwear! The ceremony is based on the book The Wedding of Q and U by Maureen Keegan.

Dr. Kay Drew and Mrs. Gina Goostree are escorted in as the Mothers of Q&U to begin the ceremony. The Processional continues with our Pre-K students dressed to the nines, with the girls tossing quarters and the boys carrying a stuffed teddy bear. They are our ring “bear”ers and quarter girls. Kindergarten students then enter dressed as Queens and Quarterbacks and take their place mid-court. A group of FUSE students act as vowels during the ceremony while our Senior buddies act as ‘Shushers’ (instead of Ushers). Coach Todd Hood leads students through the ceremony, reminding each student that Q and U are meant to be together. At the end of the ceremony students move their tasty ring pops from the right hand to the left hand. A short reception is held afterward.

This event is something our students remember for years and a wonderful Clarksville Academy tradition!

8th Grade English

At the conclusion of reading and experiencing Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, Mrs. Burkhart’s 8th grade English class enjoyed a culminating event called, Tea with Aunt Alexandra.

This experience allowed students the opportunity to bring their character analysis to life by having them “walk in another person’s shoes,” as Atticus Finch told his daughter Scout in the novel.

The students recreated Aunt Alexandra’s tea party and were able to mingle and converse with the citizens of Maycomb. They dressed as their chosen character and were required to converse as that persona during the entire event.

7th Grade English

The 7th grade have been studying the author, Rudyard Kipling during our unit on short stories. We ended the unit by writing and illustrating our own ebook short story using Kipling as  inspiration. The best part was sharing the stories with lower school students. However, 7th graders also  learned that if you want to know the truth about your work, just ask a first grader!  Days like this are what makes Clarksville Academy so special.

Third grade weather wizards have been collecting weather data, created cloud posters, weather instrument flip books and cloud Keynote presentations.  Some students even impressed by making homemade weather instruments for extra credit.

Science Lab

First graders experiment with liquids to determine their shape.  Their investigations revealed that water takes the shape of its container.  To add to the experiment we combined primary colors to see the results.

Third graders continue their study of weather.  We created homemade barometers and demonstrated the effect when air pressure changes.

4th Grade

CDE visited fourth graders to explain how electricity travels from power lines into our homes and also taught electrical safety rules.

Science Lab

Third graders noted temperature ranges as they continue their study of weather and weather instruments.  They also received their Bonnie Plant Cabbage sprouts, and information about a nationwide contest that they can choose to enter from home.  The contest rules and guidelines can be accessed online, and participants/entries are also submitted online.

Second grade concludes their study of Water Habitats. We created a pond using local pond water.  We added animals and insects related to pond life. We tested water quality using Project WET supplies, from a recent workshop.  Due to our extremely warm weather we were even able to see some larval stage invertebrates.

First graders begin their study of Matter.  We examined the properties of Solids, Liquids, and Gases.  We placed capsules in our liquids, and observed their expansion.

3rd Grade

Third grade is soaring as they learn about Weather & Clouds.  Students create a Clouds Poster and identify types of Clouds, their appearance, location in the sky & what kind of weather they bring.

Students in third grade are anxiously awaiting their arrival of a clutch of chicks!!! They observed and tested to see if the eggs were winners, yolkers, or quitters.  This technique is known as candling.  The students were enthralled and excited about their discovery!

Upper School News: March 6 – March 10, 2017

Honors Biology

The students have been focused this week on learning about a special group of proteins called enzymes. During our enhanced schedule days the students conducted and Enzyme lab using potatoes and hydrogen peroxide. During the lab students used ground raw potatoes, diced raw potatoes, and cooked diced potatoes. All animal and plant cells contain the enzyme catalase. When catalase comes in contact with hydrogen peroxide it chemically breaks the hydrogen peroxide down into water and oxygen gas (bubbles). The objective of the lab was for students to determine how environments factors, such as temperature and surface area, affect the enzyme reaction rate.

Honors Zoology

The students are becoming more comfortable with the process of dissecting and discovering unique anatomical features of each group of animals. This week the focus of studies has been on the group of animals classified as annelids. In addition to the earthworm, leeches, and marine worms belong to this group. Next week the students will study Gastropods, examples of organism in this group are squids, octopus, and nautilus. The students will dissect a squid.

Mock Crash

Next Friday, the Transportation CBL group in conjunction with the Clarksville Police will be staging a mock crash at the Cougar Sports Complex. Actors from our CBL group will be in the “crash”.
