Grandparents Day With A Twist

Clarksville Academy’s Annual Grandparents Day was celebrated with an innovative twist this week. Students in grades PK through 5th showcased their talents for their grandparents. Each grade treated grandparents to a special program of music, art, and public speaking. This year students also demonstrated their use of technology with each project. Students in grades PK-3rd grade recorded video “Artist Statements” detailing their artistic process, what they learned while creating the art and what was their favorite part of the process. Fourth and fifth grade students created Keynote presentations that linked to a QR code. This Keynote included biographical information, techniques used during the creative process, and reflection of their work. This approach used by Jordyn Baldwin, the Lower School Art teacher, enabled students to push the artistic journey deeper. This also helped the grandparents view behind the scenes footage of their artistic process. A portrait opportunity for grandparents and students was another special highlight. The wireless capability on campus allowed for printing of the portraits instantly, so they could have a memento to remember the special day and time together.

Larry and Linda Thompson grandparents to CA fourth grader, Will Rager loved the grandparents’ day experience. “Today has been so lovely. We enjoyed seeing our grandsons perform and loved their art exhibit. The use of technology was a great way for us to see how they brought their projects to life. The photo given to us was such a sweet gesture. We are amazed at our grandsons’ use of iPads with their schoolwork.”

CA takes pride in fully engaging students each day. Sara Hendrix Lower School iInfuser, “At Clarksville Academy we are upholding the honor of being a Distinguished Apple School by continuing to pioneer a 1:1 technology integration plan. We are thoughtfully implementing technology in different ways throughout the school by enhancing the best practices and effective teaching already happening in our Lower School classrooms.”

Inviting families to share classroom experiences are the norm not the exception at Clarksville Academy. Celebrating with families who are a part of CA is part of the educational process. Kay Drew stated, “Families play an important part in our education. This year we wanted our students to invite their grandparents to take part in the use of technology in the classroom. Watching the interaction between these generations as they share the love of learning together is irreplaceable.”

3rd grade science lab with Mrs. Askew

This week in Science Lab, 3rd graders created landforms: Mountains, Hills, Valleys, Canyons, Plains, Volcanos, and Mesas. We used modeling clay and placed our landforms in a plastic bin, to represent the geography of the Earth. We hypothesized, predicted, and observed what would happen when we added water. We observed that water would form lakes, rivers, and oceans.

ASPIRE Testing

Clarksville Academy’s testing season is nearing! We will be testing through ACT’s assessment system, ACT Aspire, as the summative assessment for 3rd through 10th grades. This assessment has replaced EXPLORE and PLAN tests, as ACT is discontinuing the use of the EXPLORE and PLAN assessments.

ACT Aspire is a digital and longitudinal assessment system that will connect our student’s performance to their college readiness. The Aspire is linked to ACT’s college readiness standards and will serve as an integral part of our student’s success.

During the month of April, Clarksville Academy will administer the ACT Aspire to all students in the 3rd through 10th grade. Students in grades 3rd through 8th
will take the paper version of the Aspire test and students in grades 9th
and 10th will test using the computer-based version of the Aspire.

The ACT Aspire will be administered during the mornings of the following dates:

3rd – 5th grades Monday, April 20th through Friday, April 24th

6th – 10th grades Monday, April 20th and Friday, April 24th

Expanding the Experience

Clarksville Academy is still very excited about our expansion plans! As you can see a new expansion which opened Feb 2015 is adjacent to the main building. This expansion is really booming on the north end of our campus and we are thrilled with the process! In this expanded part of the main building we have the opportunity for a few more classrooms to be named. We have had a few families reserve naming rights on some of the classrooms, but still have a couple left. If you are interested in honoring or memorializing someone in this way, please contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com or 647-6311. These won’t last long.

Our hope is to have the new building shown below completed by 2020. We need your help do this! Contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com to find out what you can do to help us reach our goal.

Box Tops & Campbell’s Labels

This is a reminder that CA collects Campbell’s labels and Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.

Clarksville Academy Announces New Head Girls Basketball Coach

We are proud to announce Carrie Daniels as the new Head Girls Basketball Coach. Jerri Bragg will continue to be a part of the girls basketball program and team serving in the capacity of Assistant Coach. Bragg will also continue to be the Head Cross Country Coach.

Head of School Kay Drew said, “Coach Bragg, Coach Peterson, and myself have had many discussions regarding the advancement of our girls athletic program. Both Peterson and Bragg fully support Coach Daniels joining CA to strengthen our school’s fitness and athletic programs.”

“Coach Daniels’ experience with collegiate athletics will only benefit our girls. Our goal at CA is to encourage our students to grow both on and off the court, and Coach Daniels’ prior actions demonstrate she will do just that,” said Coach Jerri Bragg.

Daniels does not gauge performance success in working with student athletes only in statistics of wins, losses, and points gained. For her, the focus has always been about the students. Her record on student achievement both on and off the court is a legacy that she is proud of. Daniels remarked, “My students are more than just players to me, they are family. I want them to achieve success both on the court and off so that they can go on to have fulfilling, enriched lives. Academics, school involvement, and athletics all go hand in hand to prepare these girls for college and life.”

Upon graduating from APSU, Carrie Daniels’ coaching career began at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas in 1996. She served as Assistant Coach & Director of Basketball Operations at UNLV for three years. In 1999, she took the position of Assistant Coach at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green, KY. She served the WKU community for seven years, and in 2006, began as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Austin Peay State University. She was at APSU for nine years.

Her nineteen years of coaching have only strengthened her desire to lead her players toward their future, “Basketball is more than about a round ball and a hardwood floor. It’s about teamwork, drive, determination and goal setting to be a part of something greater than yourself,“ said Daniels.

Athletic Director Jake Peterson knows the addition of Daniels brings our athletic program to a whole new level: “Coach Daniels has proven herself both on and off the court. Her students’ academic careers are just as important their athletic ones. Daniels work ethic and drive will take our girls athletic program to new heights.”

Daniels will officially begin work at Clarksville Academy in August with the start of school. She will not only fill the position of Head Girls Basketball Coach, but also teach daily fitness classes. She will begin spring workouts and meetings with her players in the coming days. Daniels will also offer community wide multi-age and skill level summer camps at Clarksville Academy during the months of June and July. Information regarding summer camps will be available on the Clarksville Academy website, Friday March 27.

Head of School Kay Drew declared, “The addition of Coach Daniels puts us one step closer to achieving our goal of strengthening our girls fitness and athletic programs. Our Upper School students will not only be given the benefit of an excellent coach, but our Upper, Intermediate, and Lower School students will also receive a solid skills and technique foundation though our fitness programs. Carrie Daniels and Jerri Bragg are a power duo that will take our fitness and athletic programs to whole new level.”
