Upper School News: January 23 – January 27, 2017

Debate

Mrs.Pitt’s Debate classes had their first round of debates last week. The students were awesome and Mrs. Pitt was impressed with their hard work! (Pictured: Junior Michaela Dowdy and Sophomore Stone Norris)

 

Basketball

Freshman Sydneey Boykin was honored by Culver’s as their Player of the Week for her performance during the Greenbrier game. Congratulations to Sydneey for this wonderful honor.

 

FCA

Our community is saddened by the loss of Brock Blick. While Brock did not attend Clarksville Academy, many of our students knew Brock and his family and want to show their support in his memory. CA’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes is spearheading a drive for donations for the Humane Society. The Blick family has requested that Brock’s memory be honored in this way. The drive will be this week, Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Please see Debbie Turnage when turning this in.

Varsity Dance

All girls interested in trying out for the Varsity Dance Team need to attend one or both days of the upcoming Varsity Dance Clinic.  The clinic will be Tuesday, Feb 21 and Thursday, Feb 23, from 3:15-4:30 in the Aux Gym.  There will be dancers, dance teachers and dance coaches to help teach technique and skills needed for tryouts.  Please email Theresia Burchett, tbburchett@aol.com if you are interested or to ask questions.

Prom Committee

Nine members of the Prom Committee traveled to view the prom venue in Hopkinsville. They looked at the space and made decisions on decorations. They loved the look of the building and are looking forward to a beautiful prom at the James E. Bruce Convention Center on May 20th. Intermediate School News: January 23 – January 27, 2017

Bowling

Congratulations to 8th grader Leah Hayes for making the TN State Bowling Tournament in Smyrna last week. It is an elite honor to make the state tournament in any sport but to do so as an 8th grader is even more exciting. Leah finished 64th individually and we could not be more proud of her success.

Lower School News: January 23 – January 27, 2017

1st Grade

First grade students presented timelines with 7 important events that have happened to them from birth to now. The students came in with a variety of creative ideas and enjoyed sharing with their classmates.




3rd Grade

3rd Grade had a busy week! Students participated in a variety of activities throughout various subjects. Our in class science lesson had students working with minerals and rocks. Students learned all about Minerals & Rocks in a variety of ways through research, vocabulary study, creation of their birthstone and a Group Minerals & Rocks candy display!



 

The third grade classes have been studying the continent of Antarctica.  Here is some art work of the wildlife found in Antarctica.

 

Math Lab

Students are working on the Distributive Property of Multiplication in Math Lab.


Science Lab

Third graders study sedimentary rocks and identify the components: sand, silt/mud, pebbles and stones.  We created sedimentary sandwiches using marshmallow cream for silt, jelly for sand, mini chocolate chips for pebbles, and mini marshmallows for small stones.  We had samples of sedimentary rocks to view and reviewed igneous and metamorphic rocks as well.


Kindergarten

Kindergarten students are really learning their sentence mechanics. We have focused on beginning sentences with capital letters and ending sentences with punctuation. Using our descriptive words and inventive spelling the students described their own snowman or snowlady.  Come see our display in the lower school hallway. The students are super proud of their work.

Varsity Dance Team is selling car wash tickets for $10.  The tickets are good at Screaming Eagle Car Wash are Madison Street.  This is a $2 discount on the $12 wash. Please see a member of dance team of Theresia Burchett to buy one or two.

Girls Varsity Basketball

The Clarksville Academy girls basketball team is currently number 1 in the District! This team has fought hard and worked to make it to the top spot. Read more about our Varsity Lady Cougars here.

 

Varsity Boys Basketball

The boys team is currently holding the number 2 spot in the District with a 12-4 overall record and 6-2 district record. This team is something to watch! Stay tuned for more information on the boys team!

Builder’s Club

Intermediate School Builders Club collecting plastic bottle caps for “Caps of Love”, helping children purchase wheelchairs. Students will collect bottle caps through the month of February.

iLink

On Friday iLink spent the morning paying it forward as part of their iLink service this year.

Coach Trent’s class spent time in first grade working with students on an art project, while Mrs. Liam’s group read to third grade.

The A-OK Club iLink group assisted Mrs. Samuels kindergarten class with word groups & putting flip books together to take home.

Lower School News: January 16 – January 20, 2017

Math Lab

Students worked on subtraction problems with regrouping in Math Lab. They “iced” this lesson!

 

Science Lab

First Graders conclude their study of the earth’s resources by learning about recycling.  We discussed ways to help take care of our planet, and learned the three “R’s” – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

 

 

1st grade

First grade practiced finding long i words with a scavenger hunt using QR codes. After scanning the codes, students would see a picture or read a sentence and have to determine which long i word matched.

 

 

3rd Grade

Third grade students receive some help from 5th grade iLead students as they explore minerals and chalk (contains the mineral calcite), which will serve as a cover for their minerals and rocks research packets.

 

Third graders are exploring and working through the Distributive Property of Multiplication problems through hands-on array models.

 

 

FUSE

FUSE Social Studies students used key pictures to retell the events of the War of 1812.

Skating

Beginning on February 13th, grades 3 through 9 will participate in our skating unit in Physical Education. This is be a fun and exciting 3 days.

 

Kindergarten

Kindergarten had a great time with our senior buddies on Friday. We created a self portrait as if we were catching snowflakes.

Community Impact Award

Congratulations to Clarksville Academy for receiving the Community Impact Award for Clarksville-Montgomery County for our students’ outstanding work through the Challenge Based Learning Program. We were honored to accept the award at the awards ceremony last week.

Lady Cougars

The Clarksville Academy Lady Cougars Varsity Basketball team has recorded many firsts this year.  They successfully launched a JV program for the first time in school history.  They are currently tied for first place in the District.  They have an 9-7 record in overall game play with a 7-1 district record and still have ten regular season games left in the season.

 

 

Success like this doesn’t happen overnight.  This group of young ladies has consistently worked toward improving their team and they are reaping the fruits of their labor.  It has required commitment. Some teammates arrive at CA as early as 6:00 a.m. to get in shooting time.  Others spend long hours in fitness classes improving their overall strength.

Coach Carrie Daniels has played a key role in that success.  Since her arrival two seasons ago, she has transformed our girls basketball program.  Her collegiate coaching experience and passion for the game is a perfect fit for the Cougar program.  “After spending nineteen years at the collegiate level, I have to admit, transitioning to high school made me a little apprehensive at first.  It wasn’t that I questioned my ability. I knew I understood the game and had the experience to lead the team; it was more the unknown.  The college game was all I had done for nineteen years.  After coaching here two seasons, I honestly can’t see myself anywhere else” Coach Daniels stated.

Coach Daniels’ drive to see each girl improve and be passionate about basketball is what turned a corner for the Cougar program.  Athletic Director, Jake Peterson said, “Winning is about so much more than points on the board.  It’s about believing in yourself, practice, focus, determination, and a true team spirit.  The Lady Cougars have found that.”  This year there was an increase in the number of girls who tried out for varsity. This allowed them to form the first ever JV team in CA history.  Increased numbers also brought on healthy competition between teammates and encouraged each player to work harder for her playing time.  But, the biggest change, and most important change is that these girls want to win, and they believe they can.  They put in the work, the practice, the training to become better, stronger players and in turn are winners.

The Lady Cougars are improving each week with every game.  They don’t back down from any challenge Coach Daniels and her staff present.  Mandatory strength training workouts, weight lifting, running, and skill drills are all part of the process.  Just as important, the girls are spending time together off the court and that is affecting their effectiveness on it.  The team bonding and sense of team pride have played vital roles in their success.

Freshman starter, Sydneey Boykin is the current leading scorer for the Academy and is ranked in the Top 5 in the state for steals.  Boykin has the capacity of Division 1 level play, and she will continue to improve and mature during the next three years.  Keisha Phillips, a Junior, is also new to the Cougar team.  Keisha leads rebounding and has completed several double-double games this season.  (double digit scoring and double digit rebounds)  Phillips was named to Hall’s Sgt. York Holiday-All Tournament Team in Jamestown, TN this past December.  Phillips has the talent to play ball on the collegiate level and will only grow.

“I could not be more proud to be the coach of these ladies wearing blue and gold.  When they step out on that court, it may not always be perfect and go according to plan, but the one thing I know is they are going to give us effort and that’s one thing you can’t coach” Daniels stated.  Passion, determination, grit and a will to see this team go further than any other in the school’s history is what makes the Lady Cougars the team to watch this season!

 

 

Upper School News: January 9 – January 13, 2017

Honors Anatomy

In Honors Anatomy and Physiology students are learning about vision.  They dissected a sheep eye.  Students then assessed their own visual acuity, visual map, blind spot, peripheral vision, and astigmatism in a series of activities.
