Studio Art

Mr. Neitzke’s Studio Art class students are working on an all white still life assignment. The monochromatic still life drawing project is done in a low level of light environment and employs spot lights to increase the dramatic range of gray scale values. In an early stage of the project students use a view finder to assist art students in finding their composition.

Honors Anatomy

This week honors anatomy students determined the two-point threshold in different areas of the body to test the density of touch receptors.  They also tested tactile localization and demonstrated adaptation of touch receptors.   At the end of the week we looked at fingerprints.

6th Grade Science

In recent weeks, the students began a unit on our naturally occurring satellite, the Moon. The students participated in a lab in which they measured how far they could jump on Earth and mathematically calculated how far they could jump on our moon and other planets. The students learned the phases of the moon and created a graphic organizer of the phases. Last week the focus has been on the moon causes ocean tides and how the earth’s tilt causes our 4 seasons.

Social Studies

Sixth Graders played a few intense rounds of Quizlet Live Vocabulary in preparation for their quiz next week on Mesopotamia and the Fertile Crescent.

IS Music

Music theory is the understanding of written music, and it provides a language for composers and musicians to communicate with each other. Students that understand musical theory can read a page written by a composer hundreds of years ago, and understand what that composer wanted them to play, and how. How amazing is that?

For students, music theory is mostly about how music is written on a page, and how to interpret that written music. This can include understanding what a note is, what a scale is, what a key is, and what accidentals (sharps and flats) are.  In Artistic Performance, students are taught music theory through lectures, games and opportunities to write down music concepts that are being taught.

To further enhance the students music experience in the classroom, Piano Maestro App as been added to their iPads. Piano Maestro, ranked #1 Education App, Piano Maestro helps students practice and learn their sight reading, rhythm, technique, playing with both hands and much more.

Science News

First grade observed Leaves, Flowers, Roots, and Stems.  We measured fern fronds and compared them with other leaves. We looked at live flowers and artificial flowers  and observed the difference between living and non living things.

Second graders dissected tomatoes to observe the seeds inside the fruit.  We had examples of cherry tomato plants and identified the yellow blossoms that will become the fruit. We identified leaves and stems.

Third graders observed the lab results they began last week.  We noted after seven days our pea seeds had germinated and the roots measured 2 inches. We discussed what was needed for our seeds to sprout.

2nd Grade

Ms. Phillips’ class had fun writing friendly letters to the students in Mrs. Clemments’ class.

3rd Grade

Third grade students are estimating differences by practicing board problems, sharing their math steps and participating in discussion with their classmates.

Music News

This month in music we are discovering the many talents of our Composer of the Month, Johann Strauss II.

  • Monday, September 11: Red, White, & Blue Day
The Student Council could think of no better way to take great pride in our country as we remember those lost on September 11. Dress in your best American pride gear. Most importantly, keep our flag sacred: no misuse of the flag—such as wearing it as a cape, wrapping up in it, or allowing it to drag the ground—will be permitted. Your flag shirts, hats, etc. are fair game.
  • Tuesday, September 12: Tacky Tourist Day
If you’ve anxiously awaited your chance to bust out those Mickey Mouse ears, your polaroid camera, your fanny packs, and your aloha shirts, your time has come. We look forward to seeing a gym full of walking tourists!
  • Wednesday, September 13: Disney Day
Whether it’s from an animated classic or a Disney Channel live action movie, your favorite Disney characters are fair game on this day. We will be pairing this dress up day with our lip sync competition in which some timeless Disney songs will be featured in our yearly song and dance.
  • Thursday, September 14: Color Wars Day
Cover yourself in your class color! Your student council representatives have selected the colors for your grade and have designed the color wars t-shirt for your grade. We’ve ordered one for every student, and we hope you’ll all sport it on this day. The colors are as follows: 12th, Black; 11th, Blue; 10th, White; 9th, Pink; 8th, Green; 7th, Red; 6th, Yellow Gold.
  • Friday, September 15: Blue & Gold Day
Show your Cougar spirit and rep our school colors as we gear up for the big game!

Magazine Sales

We are nearing our school wide Magazine Drive sales goal and this fundraiser will be closing out soon! We have had families ask if they can continue purchasing magazines, so we have extended paper order submissions through this Friday, September 8, and online sales have been extended through midnight Sunday, September 10.  Our final magazine prize assemblies have now been moved from Friday, September 8 to next Tuesday, September 12. If every student sells at least three more magazines by the final turn in date, we will have surpassed our goal!  This is fantastic! Please continue selling magazines.  There is still time! We are so proud of our students and all of the hard work they have put into this fundraiser.  We thank you all for your support and excitement throughout this sale.

Homecoming Week

Homecoming Week begins Monday, September 11.  We have a full week of activities planned including dress up days for all ages, class competitions (6-12th), pep rally, football game, and dances (6th-12th).  Below you will find a complete list of dress up days and activities.

  • Bonfire Times – This will take place at the Cougar Sports Complex on Thursday, Sept. 14 beginning at 6.  The fire will be lit at dark and the event will end by 8PM.
  • Pep Rally –  will be held on Friday, September 15 at 2 in the Main gym.  All grades are invited.
  • The Football game –  will begin with tailgating at 5:30, the Cougar Walk at 6:50, the kick off at 7PM, and the coronation of Homecoming Queen at Halftime.
  • Intermediate School Dance –  will be on Saturday, Sept 16 from 7:00-10:00 PM in the Auxiliary Gym.
  • Upper School Dance –  will be on Saturday, Sept 16 from 8:00-11:00 PM at the Waterstreet Event Center located on Riverside Dr.
