CBL: SEP 2017

Sept 22, 2017 CBL Day

Community CBL 2017-18

On our First CBL day students were divided into groups based on the August interest survey they completed. 10 Groups began the process of working through the Challenge Based Learning format:

Big Idea -> Essential Questions -> Challenge -> Guiding Questions/ Activities -> Solution -> Implementation

Our Health and Fitness group facilitated by Mrs. Hardison and Mrs. Lindsey will begin followup reports on their recent installation of B-cycles at the Pollard Road Station and Downtown Locations.

Our Mentoring group facilitated by Mr. Christmas and Mr. Burroughs began with brainstorming ideas, narrowing their scope according to the format layout. They designed roles/responsibilities, defining the roles as they progressed.

The Literacy Group, has begun contacting off campus Resources and Experts in-the-field as they begin investigating how they can work in our community.

They have contacted the Adult Literacy Council, Clarksville Senior Citizens Center, and are investigating the LittleFreeLibrary.org which is an organization that helps spread the love and power of Book Sharing.

Our Clarksville Culture and Heritage group facilitated by Dr. Beach and Coach Trent listened to guest speakers, including our own Dr. Drew, along with Mr. Ryan Bowie (Roxy Theater manager) and Ms. Shana Thornton Morris (local author and playwright). They will be focusing on many historical aspects of Clarksville and communicating the history, of how Clarksville was founded, to our community.

Our Food Production Group (facilitated by Mr. Boyd and Mr. Walker) spent the morning canning Salsa made from tomatoes harvested from the Community Garden that the group helped design, build, and plant.

Our Food Security group led by Coaches Burkhart and Bragg planned planned their fall festival booth. They will work with Manna Cafe, Loaves and Fishes (donating bread monthly) and The Well.

Our Beautification group was hard at work designing a proposed mural for the downtown area. They have also been consulted work to redesigning and painting a recycling center.

Honors Biology

Honors anatomy students began the skeletal system this week.  We are exposing bones to three substances and recording changes in mass and composition over the next week.  The purpose is to model osteoporosis and apply the data to a case study.

Math

Mrs. Hardison spoke at the Tennessee Mathematics Teachers Association Annual Conference this past weekend at UT Martin. She presented her research on “How Frequent Quizzes Effect Students”. Her findings were that frequent quizzes were a good predictor on how well a student would do on a unit assessment.  This presentation was given to area TN Math teachers.

Spanish Enrichment

During Spanish Class the 6th & 7th grade students did a “breakout” of the classroom, where they had to earn “keys” to complete tasks relating to our unit on weather/ the calendar.  This interactive activity was a lot of fun for the students.

Robotics Club

In Robotics Club, we have progressed from building mission stations with Lego pieces to programming our robots to complete missions. We use engineering techniques to build our robots, and coding to program the robots. In the process, we learn to work with one another, using one another’s strengths to achieve success.

2nd Grade

Mrs. Phillips’ class has a first year CA student from Denmark. We wrote Pen Pal letters to her classmates back in Denmark. The teacher in Denmark will be able to translate the letters to the students. We are hoping we will receive letters back from her classmates!

Art

There is a Landscape exhibit up in the main building, on the walls leading to the library. We have some desert landscapes created by second graders, ‘stamped’ landscapes by the fourth graders and Asian landscapes by the fifth graders. Come see all the wonderful projects being created!

Science

First graders concluded their unit on Plants are Living Things.  We reviewed stems and leaves.  We reviewed our science vocabulary: observe, classify, infer, predict, investigate, graph and record.  We classified seeds in multiple ways- size, color, and shape.

Second graders investigate how far things move.  We discussed Force and Motion.  We determined what slows motion down-Friction. We incorporated STEM elements and measured relative distances, engineering our test runs to compare shapes of objects.  We recorded our data to infer distances of comparable objects.

Third graders reviewed plant life and when it begins.  We dissected Lima bean seeds to observe germination and seed embryos.  We identified seed coats, roots, and leaves.  We reviewed life cycles of plants and noted difference between stages.

Spanish

In Spanish Enrichment, 1st grade students worked on learning their numbers in Spanish.  When a number was called they formed it out of play-doh.

FUSE

4th grade FUSE students created 3D cell models for Science class. Students demonstrated their understanding of plant and animal cell parts, as well as their creativity with their finished projects!

3rd grade

Third graders demonstrated their knowledge of plants by creating and presenting plant (parts of a plant) diagrams.  Students also worked in teams to make flowering and conifer plant life cycle displays.

In Science, 5th grade FUSE students were treated to a visit by Austin Peay professor, Dr. Chad Brooks. Dr. Brooks spoke to 5th graders about the types of cells and how they work. Students enjoyed the hands-on demonstrations he brought with him as well!

2nd Grade

On Thursday, September 28th, the second graders had a very special visit from author/illustrator, Christie Ray. She introduced the students to her most famous character, Eliza, and she also brought along some new characters that are featured in her new books. She shared how she writes and illustrates each story. What an inspiring visit!

Honors Biology

Students in honors anatomy wrapped up the integumentary system by testing the SPF of different products using UV lights.  Students drew a line with yellow highlighter on black paper.  Using blank microscope slides to represent skin, students put a coat of sunscreens of different SPF values on each slide, in addition to plain hand lotion and shampoo.  The brightness of the yellow line as seen through the slide when the UV light is on corresponds to the SPF value.  Honors biology students are working on taxonomy.  Small groups of students were assigned taxa to research.  Students then compiled the data on 22 total groups and are applying this information in a cumulative project.  Given a list of scientific names, students are discovering the common name and matching the organism to one of the researched taxa. Students will then create a dichotomous key for all 22 groups.

Dual Anatomy

Dual enrollment anatomy and physiology assembled a disarticulated skeleton and examined real human bones in lab at APSU this week.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten enjoyed M&M math today. We sorted, graphed, and determined the greatest number and fewest number of M&M candies. Of course we enjoyed eating a few afterwards.

FUSE Math

4th graders in the FUSE program recently enjoyed a presentation from local businesswoman, Casey Jenkins, whose family owns Jenkins and Wynne Ford Lincoln Honda dealership in Clarksville, TN.  Casey shared with students how she uses math in her day-to-day activities in the vehicle business.  She specifically focused on the use of large numbers through the millions place values and the real-world use of ordering, comparing, rounding, estimation, adding, and subtracting of large numbers.  Casey’s presentation coincided with the topics 4th graders have been studying in math in relation to place value through the millions and to kick off the “If I Had a Million Dollars” project.  For this project, students will spend a pretend $1,000,000 on various big ticket items including new vehicles.

Writing

5th grade FUSE Writing students used a scrambled paragraph strategy to practice identifying and organizing structured writing.

Social Studies

4th grade FUSE students worked on research projects about their favorite group of Natives from Mesoamerica. Students worked to identify and share their location, clothing, shelter, food, and other interesting facts.

5th Grade

Clarksville Academy’s 5th graders in the FUSE program were excited recently to present a check for $535 to Pam McCaslin, sister of Dawn Stanfill, to be donated to The Dawn Stanfill Foundation.  The Dawn Stanfill Foundation is a foundation that honors the memory of local teacher, Dawn Stanfill, who passed away from breast cancer.  In her memory and for her love of children, the foundation provides financial and emotional support to local area families and children dealing with childhood cancer.  September is Childhood Cancer Awareness month, and the support color for childhood cancer is yellow gold, the 5th grade Color Wars color, which inspired the 5th graders to choose childhood cancer awareness as their community service portion of the Homecoming Door Wars competition.

1ST Grade

First Grade students sequenced events in a story by telling what they did on their summer vacation.

Science Lab News

1st grade

First graders reviewed the parts of plants – roots stems and leaves.  We had cornstalks to identify stems and leaves.  We also used the sense of smell to observes a variety of leaves: mint, rosemary, sage, and even chives.

2nd grade

Second graders discussed how things move.  We investigated Force, Motion and Friction by Bowling!  We observed how much force it takes to knock our pins down, and how friction changes the results.

3rd Grade

Third grade observed Ornamental corn and discussed heredity and how characteristics are transmitted to offspring.  We also conducted and experiment to note the flow of water through a variety of stems.  We looked at how celery stalks (stems) transport colored water changing leaves to blue and red.
