Dear Clarksville Academy Family,

It is with great sadness that I share Dr. Kay Drew, Clarksville Academy Head of School, has decided to transition at the end of this school year from her position as Head of School to join her husband, Brig. General Tom Drew, as he takes command at his next assignment. As you all know, Kay holds her family close at heart and due to Tom’s military career, the past years have been ones of separation and travel as they both maintained their own careers, often times in separate locations.  So while we are sad to see her go, we are happy that she will be joining Tom to support him in his assignment and continued service to our country.

As Chairman of the Board and a parent at Clarksville Academy, I express my sincere appreciation to Kay for her many outstanding contributions and accomplishments during her tenure at CA.  She has played a pivotal and critical role in the development and success of our school.  Her commitment to the faculty and staff and Board of Trustees, an unending passion for our children’s education and a desire to strive for excellence in every aspect of the school’s operation is contagious and will be missed.

There is a long list of successes attributed to Kay and our press release provides just a small sampling of her many accomplishments over the years.  There is no doubt you will agree that we are much better positioned for a bright and successful future because of her outstanding leadership and long list of accomplishments.  I have no doubt that Kay will always take opportunities in the future to stay involved in education and pave the way for children from all walks of life.

Kay has agreed to remain committed to assisting the board of trustees in making a smooth transition to the eventual hiring of a new Head of School through the end of July and then offer her assistance in a consulting role.  This is not an overnight process.  Please know that as your board of trustees, we are fully committed to finding the right person that will follow in Kay’s legacy. A search committee will be formed in addition to the possible hiring of outside consultants to guide us through this all-important process.

I hope you will join me in wishing Kay the best of luck in all future endeavors, but equally important, thank her for all she has done at Clarksville Academy.  We are so much better because of Kay Drew.

Enrollment and Retention

• Under Drew’s leadership, the school has experienced impressive gains in enrollment for 15 consecutive years. Student enrollment has more than doubled increasing to the current 658 students.
• In her tenure, Clarksville Academy has seen a 90% average for the retention rate among not only students but faculty as well.
• The school now draws students from over 27 zip codes, to include a diverse population of military, civilian, and international students.

Academics/Arts/Athletics

• Drew led the innovative move from books only to the addition of 1:1 Apple technology in grades K-12, and the school’s designation as a nationally recognized Apple Distinguished School for five years.
• She guided the Clarksville Academy athletic program through the addition of expanded team offerings, and increased team success including a State Championship title, and a move to Division II athletics.
• Inside the growth of student population, strong student performance has also occurred with increased college readiness scores, 100% college acceptances and increased college scholarship dollars.
• Drew added a service education component (CBL or Challenge-Based Learning) to the curriculum. Students and faculty team and collaborate for solutions of positive change in the greater Clarksville community in the areas of health, arts, low-income needs, and military family assistance.

 Campus Growth and Development

• She positioned Clarksville Academy for growth by purchasing 26.5 acres and developing the CA Sports Complex and field house. The complex includes Wes Smith Baseball Field, Simpson Football field, Burchett Softball field, Winn Soccer field, and the Marissa Maples Hood practice field.
• Her vision and a strong desire for growth resulted in the construction of a $4.5 million new education building, which houses state of the art classrooms.
• CA is currently purchasing 5 acres of adjoining land at the sports complex for future athletic programs.
• Under Drew’s leadership, the school has generated increased financial gifts.

Letter from Tim Sawyer, Chairman of the Board of Trustees »

Clarksville, Tenn. Clarksville Academy, a Pre-K through 12^th grade private college preparatory school, announced Monday that Dr. Kay Drew has decided to transition from her position as Head of School to join her husband, Brig. General Tom Drew in Fayetteville, NC at Ft. Bragg as he takes command as Deputy Commanding General for U.S. Special Operations. Her move is effective July 31, 2018.

Dr. Kay Drew has had a long association with Clarksville Academy. Prior to her appointment as Head of School of Clarksville Academy in 2003, Drew began her career at CA as an Art teacher in 1993. After several years of teaching, she was asked to transition into the role of External Affairs Director. In 2002, Drew was asked to serve as Interim Head of School and shortly thereafter was installed as the sixth Head of School by the search committee and CA Board of Trustees.

Dr. Drew states, “Tom and I have spent many hours, days, and even weeks discussing, thinking, and praying about this decision and I have clarity and peace with it. The emotional rollercoaster of this announcement comes from having spent the majority of my years in education here at Clarksville Academy and having that era come to a close.”

When asked about her leadership at Clarksville Academy Drew stated, “I feel very proud of all that has been accomplished, and I owe a debt of gratitude to those who have worked along my side, both past and present, during this journey. I have had the opportunity to team with some fantastic teammates, students, families, alumni, and Board of Trustee members. I am leaving behind a truly outstanding team at Clarksville Academy. It is a team filled with talent, energy, focus, character, and loyalty. CA will continue to be served at the highest level.”

Dr. Drew will remain committed to assisting the Board of Trustees in making a smooth transition to the eventual hiring of a new Head of School. Kay Drew, Clarksville Academy Board of Directors and the CA administrative team will be diligent and focused on the right action plan for the open Head of School position. This plan will be announced on the CA website in June 2018.

Ben Clark, a 1997 graduate of Clarksville Academy will make his Hollywood debut on May 17.

Ben’s film, The Snowman Trek will have a 1 night nationwide showing on May 17 at 7PM at the Regal Cinemas on Tiny Town Road.  The film follows Ben and his team as they take on the often dangerous and treacherous Snowman Trek.  Ben not only stars in the film, but he also played a major role behind the camera.  He is the cinematographer, writer and director for the film.  When asked about the film, Ben stated that his time at CA helped him to realize his dreams. His time with Dr. Drew in art and with Coach Genz on the field taught him the confidence, artistry, and athleticism to succeed at his passions.

Play

Last week, CA students performed in The Montgomery County Chronicles, an original play by Shana Thornton. Directed by Mrs. Amanda Pitt and also led by  Dr. Rebecca Beach, Mrs. Debbie Hollis, and Mr. Mike Trent, the play was a big success! Mr. Ryan Bowie, Executive Director of the Roxy Regional Theatre graciously hosted the event and lent his technical expertise to the show, creating a masterful blend of music, sound effects, and images that enhanced the play.

 

Anatomy and Physiology

Dual Enrollment Anatomy and Physiology celebrated the end of the semester with a trip to the zoo and the Adventure Science Center. APSU finals were earlier this week.

 

Sports Banquet

The Billy Frank Smith Memorial All Sports Banquet has been moved to Thursday, May 10, 2018.  The BFS Memorial All Sports Banquet will be held in Clarksville Academy’s Activities Center at 6:00 P.M.  This banquet celebrates and honors our varsity athletes, coaches, and the family of the late Mr. Billy Frank Smith

6^th Grade

Sixth Grade went on their annual scavenger hunt to culminate a great year of learning and friendship. Students tested their knowledge, directional sense, and teamwork to complete over 100 questions on history of our city, to fairly difficult math problems. Congratulations to our winner team, Ethan, Colby, Chloe, and Huiyoun!!

FUSE

FUSE students celebrated “May the Fourth Be With You” with a Star Wars STEM day. Students completed their “Jedi training” with a levitate a sphere challenge, as well as creating a launcher from given supplies. They enjoyed some very creative Star Wars-themed snacks and dressed in their favorite Star Wars shirts.

4th grade FUSE Social Studies students reviewed the French and Indian War by participating in an interactive simulation battle.

4^th Grade FUSE travelled to Union City, TN to visit Discovery Park. This extended day field trip was a wonderful experience for our students.

5th graders enjoyed a lively presentation by Officer Greg Grandersen this week who works with the G. R. E. A. T. Program (Gang Resistance Education and Training).  He promotes a message of anti-bullying and equips students with strategies to respond to bullying situations.  Officer Grandersen kept students engaged as students participated in a discussion about key vocabulary related to bullying behavior and role-playing.  He also promotes a message of healthy living as he had students cheer along with him that “Unhealthy choices make us WEAK!  Healthy choices make us STRONG!”  Students enthusiastically shouted the cheer and marveled at Officer Grandersen’s displays of strength from healthy choices as he lifted a student, tore a deck of cards, phone book, and license plate in half, and drove a nail through a board with his hand.  Officer Grandersen is also the author-illustrator of a comic book using the G. V is for Volunteer

Lower School events day was a huge success!  Our students and teachers worked hard decorating our hallway with a variety of information about TN.  Author Michael Shoulders came by and talked with our students while reading his book. The students enjoyed every minute of it!

 

Science News

Third graders begin their unit on  Energy.  This week in Science Lab we discussed solar energy.  We created solar ovens using recycled pizza boxes.  We used aluminum foil to reflect the sunlight.  We placed graham crackers, chocolate squares, and marshmallows in our solar ovens. Our experiment yielded a yummy treat!

Field Day

Field Day will be Tuesday, May 8 at the Sports Complex.  Please see your class newsletter for more information regarding your child’s participation.

Congratulations to Freshmen Jackson Trotter  and Diamond Bryant for being named to MTSU’s True Blue Top 100 Students.

 

Honors Biology

This week honors biology students extracted DNA from strawberries. Honors anatomy students analyzed urine for glucose, ketones, and proteins. They also dissected kidneys.

 

Spanish

Mr. Magrans took his students on the annual trip to Salsa Dance!  The students enjoyed this fun learning experience

 

Sports Banquet

Fall Creek Falls

Our 6^th grade students enjoyed their annual trip to Fall Creek Falls.  The week is centered around outdoor learning and nature.  The students hiked, explored and learned all while having an amazing time.

 

True Blue

Congratulations to 8^th Grader Diamond Bryant and Freshman Jackson Trotter for being named to MTSU’s True Blue Top 100 Students.

 

iLink

iLink spent Friday, April 20 doing a day of good deeds.  Each iLink group visited various classrooms, the cafeteria, helped maintenance, and any others on campus all while caring out acts of kindness. Some students read to lower school students, others helped maintenance with routine duties, others visited the cafeteria and helped set up for lunch.  Each group was tasked with finding a way to help CA that day.

Latin

The Latin students received their scores from taking the National Latin Exam. Clarksville Academy’s Top Scorer was Finnegan Shea. Finn also received the Cum Laude award for scoring higher than the Latin I national average.

English

In 6th grade, students examined three common poetry forms: sonnet, haiku, and villanelle. Then, they invented their own poetry forms complete with writing rules and an example. Student have enjoyed sharing their poetry with each other!

Teacher Treats

Each grade level will have the opportunity one time during the school year to provide Teacher Treats. You may contribute snacks, treats, drinks or a monetary donation to help purchase treats. Please watch for your grade’s week and contact your representative.

 

Box Top Contest

The CAA invites everyone to participate in our Box Tops Contest this year! When you turn in your Box Tops please label the baggie with your student’s name, grade and teacher (Lower School). A tally will be kept of all box top returns and a Pizza party will be awarded to the class with the most labels returned!

 

FCA

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes would like to invite everyone to be a part of FCA this year! High School will meet in room #118 Coach Trent’s Room, Intermediate School will meet in Mrs. Drake’s room. Please make plans to attend Wednesdays at 7:15am, everyone is welcome!
