Lower School News: April 16 – April 20, 2018

FUSE

4th and 5th grade students from the FUSE program had a wonderful trip to the Hermitage, home of President Andrew Jackson.  Students toured the plantation grounds, mansion, and museum exhibits.  They also participated in a hands-on history class, where they evaluated items used in the past.  The beautiful weather made for a perfect day learning about America’s history!

4th and 5th grade FUSE Social Studies students wrote reflections on their class graffiti wall about their field trip to The Hermitage.  Students noted their favorite parts of the trip, the most interesting things they learned, things they found to be surprising, and things they would like to know more about.

Fifth grade FUSE science students created children’s books about a planet of their choice. Students researched facts about their planet to include in their fictional story before completing a story map and storyboards. They shared their finished products during a “gallery walk” in class.

Steak Dinner

We were so proud of our lower school students and their hard work at Steak Dinner!

Kindergarten

Mrs. Samuels’ class applied what they have been studying about 3-D objects in class by creating a cube with coffee straws and large marshmallows. They worked as a team to build a large cube together, making sure to have 8 vertices and 6 flat surfaces. After the groups were successful each student built a mini version using toothpicks and mini marshmallows. All the students agreed that the team work cube was easier because they had more hands to help support the sides when putting the top on the cube. Next week we will begin our study of measurement.

1st Grade

First Grade had a great time learning about the life cycle of a butterfly. Our reading story for the week was “A Butterfly Grows”. Students created the different stages of the life cycle using noodles. Each class participated in a directed drawing to create a unique butterfly. To go along with their drawing, students wrote a cinquain poem composed of five lines that do not rhyme. The drawings and poems look fantastic in our hallway display. Make sure you take a look!

2nd Grade

Throughout the week, second grade students reviewed the parts of speech. The students created an alliteration using 1 verb, 2 adjectives, and 2 nouns. They created a sweet display as they wrote their alliteration on an ice cream sundae.

Science News

Third graders investigated Matter and experimented with “semi solids”.  They created slime, mixing glue, water, and a borax solution. We discussed states of matter, and physical properties of matter.

First graders investigate Force and Motion, experimenting with How can we change the way objects move? Students engineered a design constructed of mailing tubes.  We used the tubes to determine directional flow of objects.  Students QUICKLY realized that adding an incline increases speed.  We discussed mass,  and it’s effect on speed, as we compared speed times of golf balls and whiffle balls.

Continuing their study of Energy, second grade investigates how light travels.  To demonstrate that light travels in a straight line, students punched holes in index cards.  Aligning the holes, with straws, they were able to create a pathway for light to travel.  We also investigated materials that were transparent and opaque.

3rd Grade

Students have been learning about fractions using multiple strategies. Students used hands-on fraction pieces, fraction drawings/labels using different shapes, representing fractions on a number line, and completion of board problems individually and in partners.

Students learned about Weather and Clouds using a variety of strategies.  Students created weather instrument flip books, tracked weather data, created Cloud types keynote presentations and made Cloud types posters illustrated with cotton balls. Students wrapped up their studies and received extra credit by creating their own weather instruments.

Clarksville Academy Key Club had a fantastic time at District Convention in Lexington, KY over the weekend of March 16th – 18th. On the first night, club members got to hear guest speaker Judson Laipply of the famous youtube video “Evolution of Dance” and watch him perform the dance. On Saturday morning, members participated in learning the dance steps and perform their own version of “Evolution of Dance”. The morning session also included a service project in which the students worked on blankets for the Linus Project.

We are proud to announce that CA brought home 2 trophies in the talent area. Akanee Angel won 1st place in Video, you can watch the video on youtube at https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=6r3Kc_FJhsI. Jenny Li and Christy Zheng earn a second place trophy for their poster project entry.

1st Grade

Students made a picture or design from a “squiggle”.  Then students wrote a story about their picture focusing on the writing trait Conventions.

Science Lab News

Mrs. Askew brought in an adult chicken so 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Graders could see chicks in Mrs. Williams room, and an adult.  We also discussed the term Life Cycle.

Third grade created barometers, noting the effect of changing the air pressure on the device.  We used mason jars, balloons, toothpicks and rubber bands.  We looked at weather instruments including rain gauges, barometers, and anemometers.

First graders compared solids and their solubility in water. We also compared liquids and their ability to flow.  We investigated mixing different solids predicting changes that would occur when they are mixed.

2nd graders explored matter this week in Science Lab.  Using Balance Scales, we equalized mass and compared weights.  We determined “least mass” and “most mass” of a variety of items.

2nd Grade

Second graders had so much fun getting ready for Grandparent’s Day. From poems, to cards, to portraits, they covered them all. We love our grandparents so much!

3rd Grade

The third graders culminated their unit on Asia with a Korean presentation by Dr. Grace Moon.
The students learned about many of the traditions and customs of the Korean culture. They were taught the correct way to bow to show respect to your elders.

FUSE

FUSE math students were treated to a guest speaker on Tuesday, March 20.  Local architect, Josh Wright, presented students with lots of great information about the importance of math in architecture and in life.  Mr. Wright talked about the use of fractions and a scale ruler as he showed students the design plans for The Listening Room Cafe in Nashville, TN, and the floor plan for FUSE student, Spencer Lee’s home addition.  He also discussed the use of the computer program, Sketchup, to create 3D models of buildings and showed us how he can place the models on images from Google Earth to get a realistic view of the appearance of a building in the real world.  He demonstrated the software as he showed us a hotel and apartment building he’s designing on the Public Square in Russellville, KY.  Mr. Wright also shared information about how to determine project costs and income.  Students enjoyed donuts provided by Mr. Wright as he discussed the radius and diameter of a circle.  His discussion and examples were excellent to reinforce the skills we’re currently learning in 4th and 5th grade including fractions, perimeter, area, and volume.  Students asked great questions and really enjoyed the presentation.

Math Team

The Math Team had the following Award recipients. Avery King (8th grade) and Drew Miller (4th Grade) are in the Top 15% in Nation and Anna Hellums  (5th grade) is in Top 10% in the nation! Congratulations to these students.
