Chemistry

Four Clarksville Academy Juniors, Damian Hardison, Emma Hessock, Parker Rice and Sydney Watts, were invited to attend a Chemistry Workshop at Belmont University on January 29th. They spent the day extracting dye from brown M & M’s. They then used chromatography, a separation technique, to determine what pigments were used to create that brown dye. Once they had an idea of five different chromatography solvents, they were encouraged to create a mixture using any of those solvent to maximize their results. The students were able to experience a College level chemistry lab, tour the newly built science building and eat lunch in the campus cafeteria.

In Honors Biology, students studied the molecular structure of DNA and nucleotides. They spent part of their enhanced day class creating edible models of the structure from various types of soft candy. Honors Ecology students presented cubes or books that they had made about specific Ecological Biomes. Within their project, the students were required to create visual and written examples of food chains, predator-prey relationships, symbiotic relationships, and destructive human activities that occur in the assigned biome.

Art News

We are pleased to announce that during the month of March we will be running the Original Works Program at Clarksville Academy.

In business since 1989, Original Works is the #1 art based fundraising company in the country, and currently works with thousands of schools and hundreds of thousands of students each year.
Through the Original Works program, each child will have the opportunity to have their very own artwork reproduced onto a variety of high quality products. The products range from magnets, mugs and mouse pads, to ceramic tiles, t-shirts, note cards and nearly two dozen other products.

Each child is eligible to participate in this wonderful program. Once the artwork is created, parents and children will have the opportunity to select which product or products they would like to feature their artwork. The program is designed to encourage creativity and student self-esteem. The resulting products make unique gifts that are practical for any season or occasion.

Complete details on the program will be sent home shortly. Proceeds from the program will be used for purchasing many new and exciting materials in the lower school art room. For more information on Original Works please visit their website at www.originalworks.com.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten had a great time applying their math skills independently Wednesday with gummy bear math. At the beginning of the school year the students were introduced to the skills of sorting and graphing. With this activity each student was given a small baggie of gummy bears. The assignment was for them to sort the gummy bears, graph the gummy bears, count the gummy bears, and add the totals together. Once finished they were allowed to eat the gummy bears. This is a visual, hands on math activity which shows students combining sorting skills and graphing skills. The students also read the information graphed and were able to answer questions pertaining to the graph. The teachers may ask questions like, which color gummy bear do you have the most of, fewest of, or how many of 2 colors together do you have. The kindergarteners had a great time with their gummy bear math.
