Lower School News: October 5 – October 11, 2015

PreK

This week CA Pre-K will be having lots of fun while studying Farm and the letter Ff. On Thursday, October 8th, Pre-K will have its annual Farm Fresh Breakfast on the playground at 9:30! All Pre-K families are invited to attend.

1st Grade Pet Show

Save the date! Thursday, October 29 we will host our annual 1st Grade Pet Show at 9AM in the Gym. This is a wonderful event that you will not want to miss!

Science Lab

This week in the FAB LAB 3rd graders investigated Animal Shelters. They created bird nests using soil, water, sticks, and pine straw. Forming the circular nests, students realized the unique adaptations birds have to survive in their environment.

After School Enrichment Program

CA is proud to announce our After School Enrichment Program. Throughout the year we will continue to add a variety of activities to the schedule. This is a reminder that CA collects Campbell’s labels and Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.

Intermediate School News: October 5 – October 11, 2015

6th Grade English

Mrs. McQueen’s 6th Grade English class, students are reading Walk Two Moons by Sharon Creech. As the students read, they are taking the journey across the country with the main character using Google Lit Trips. Students will journal as they “travel” in Google Earth. This is a great way for students to get a feel for the exciting things that the characters experience in the story.

Mrs. McQueen’s 6th Grade English students will be entering a “1st Line Contest” presented by Scope Scholastic. Scholastic has paired with the author, Linda Sue Park. Students all over the country will contribute what they feel a best “1st Line” will be for a short story. The winning student’s 1st line will be the start of a short story in a coming issue of Scope Scholastic magazine.

Saturday School

Saturday school will be held on Saturday, October 31, from 8:00-Noon.

Upper School News: October 5 – October 11, 2015

Josten’s Rep on Campus

Junior and senior parents, don’t forget…A Jostens representative will be on campus Wednesday, October 7, 2015, from 11:45 A.M. until 1:20 P.M. taking class ring orders and senior announcement, memorabilia, and cap and gown orders. This is the only day that our representative will be on campus taking orders. Packets went home early last week with all package offerings and order forms. If your student will not be on campus on Wednesday, October 7, please turn your order in prior to Wednesday. Please contact the main office if you have any questions.

Governor’s School

The 2016 Governor’s School applications are now available at: https://www.tn.gov/education/topic/tdoe-governors-schools

The Tennessee Governor’s Schools offer selected gifted and talented high school students intensive learning experiences on postsecondary campuses. Students in the tenth and eleventh grades who would like to participate in a challenging and high-intensity program in one of the twelve areas should speak with their school counselor. Each Governor’s School convenes a review/selection committee, which will select the students after all applications are submitted.

All applications must be submitted through Mrs. Denise Walker at least 1 week prior to the deadline. Please note, each school’s deadline is different. The deadlines range between November 6, 2015 through December 15, 2015. Please see me if you have questions.

Cougar Forensics

The Upper School Forensics Team competed at White House High School on Saturday. Freshmen Madison Hawkins and Hunter Kueter and sophomore Tashaunda Grimmett competed for the first time in Impromptu Speaking. Each commented on how much they enjoyed participating in this activity for the first time! Freshmen Tyler Jones again competed in Poetry Interpretation with a collection of poems by Shel Silverstein. Mrs. Baron is so proud of her new team and continues to look forward to their upcoming tournaments, including one on Halloween at Brentwood Academy. Please come out and support the Forensics Team’s booth at Fall Festival and help us fundraise for transportation and registration costs!

Mrs. Baron’s English Classes

Mrs. Baron’s English I classes are wrapping up their first quarter study of The Value of Life. Students have read The Book Thief, Animal Farm and a collection of poems, short stories, and articles to prepare to write an argument essay in which they articulate whether it is possible to place a monetary value on a human life.

Mrs. Baron’s English II classes are wrapping up their first quarter study of Struggle, Survival, and Adaptation. Students have read Man’s Search for Meaning, Between Shades of Gray, and a collection of poems, short stories, and informational texts to prepare to write an argument essay in which they articulate the value struggle plays in a human life.

Interact Club

Congratulations to our new INTERACT CLUB officers! Interact club members will be attending the weekly meeting of the Sunrise Rotary Club on Thursday, October 9. Interact members meet twice a month, and the club’s focus is serving others in our Clarksville community in conjunction with the ideals of Rotary Club International.
Treasurer Emma Hessock can collect the $10 annual club dues which are due by October 24.

Author Kelsey Timmerman

Author Kelsey Timmerman visited Clarksville Academy on Friday to sign student’s copies of “Where Am I Wearing?”. This book was read by all our upper school students as part of their summer reading program. The students enjoyed talking with Mr. Timmerman and hearing more about his thoughts behind his book.

Car Decal

All lower school students will receive 1 car decal in their backpacks today. We encourage every family to place this in the lower corner of their back car window. IS/US students will be given decals during assembly tomorrow. If anyone would like an additional decal please contact the main office. We would love to see every family have this wonderful new decal proudly displayed on their car window.

School Photos

School photos will be sent home with all students on Tuesday. If you want to order your photos please return the order form by no later than October 20. Retakes will be made on Nov 4.

Fall Festival

The Clarksville Academy Fall Festival is quickly approaching! On October 24 from 10:00 AM-3:00 PM families can participate in variety of fun activities. During this annual event we will have carnival games, a silent auction, vendor booths, food and so much more! If you are interested in being a vendor for this year’s fall festival please contact Candice Wall at candicewall@att.net. These booths are open to outside vendors and we encourage you to participate. Each grade will also have a carnival game booth. Check with your child’s teacher/sponsor to sign up for a time to work. Each class is also assigned a themed basket and we ask that items be donated for these. A complete list of baskets is below.

Golf Team

The Varsity Golf Teams have had an amazing season! Both the girls and boys teams have steadily remained on top throughout the season. Last week both teams competed at the Regional Tournament. Sadly, our boys season ended with this final tournament. However, our girls team will advance to the State Tournament for the third year in a row! Only either teams across the state in A-AA advance as a team! Bailey Foote, Mallory Saleh and Hunter Farrell will compete on October 13-14 at Willowbrook Golf Course in Manchester, Tennessee. Great job ladies!

Choir Fundraiser

Concert and Show Choirs will be kicking off their yearly fundraiser this Wednesday. The group is selling cookie dough, candles, and cakes until October 20th. This fundraiser helps supplement the equipment, props, some costume needs and our trip to Gatlinburg. See any choir member, Mrs. Hollis, or go by Mrs. Turnage’s desk to place an order and support the group! All purchases will be delivered before Thanksgiving!

iCougar App

We encourage everyone with an apple device to download the iCougar app today. This is a great way to stay updated with all the latest in school closings, emergency notifications, etc. If you already have the app, please make sure to go to the app store and update it! A new update was released in January. We are currently investigating the Android market and hope to have it available there soon.

Attendance

Please contact Kristi Truitt at ktruitt@clarksvilleacademy.com when your child is going to be out of school. This helps us to keep our attendance records up to date. If you know your child will be late due to an appointment please let us know that as well. Thank you.

Please remember to Pre-Order Lunch each week. This is very important even when you are on the annual or bi-annual lunch plan. Clarksville Academy now offers a Cougar Bucks Account option to better assist children with their lunch needs! This convenient option gives families the opportunity to deposit money into an account and this money can be withdrawn for miscellaneous items that are available at the express window or the hot lunch window.
