French

Currently, French III is reading Le Comte de Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas in the original French.  This swashbuckling thriller has us sitting on the edge of our seat until the last ounce of revenge is exacted as we move to the last page of this fabulous 19th century adventure novel.

English

Earlier this month, Upper School students from each English class participated in the Shakespeare Monologue Competition. Each year, all Upper School students memorize and recite a Shakespearean monologue in class competitions across campus. Champions from each class come together to compete for a chance to represent Clarksville Academy in Nashville at the Regional Shakespeare Monologue Competition organized by the English Speaking Union of the United States. There, students from various schools from around the mid-state vie for one coveted spot in the National Shakespeare Competition in New York City. We had some incredible performances this year, and our panel of expert judges (including two theatre professionals and a Shakespeare scholar) named junior Maggie Clark as the school winner this year. This is Maggie’s second time being crowned champion, and she will take her rendition of Queen Margaret from Henry VI, Part 3 to Belmont’s Troutt Theatre on Saturday, March 3. Break a leg, Maggie!

Speech

Mrs. Pitt’s Speech Classes their demonstration speeches last week. The students showed how to do everything from braiding hair to playing the ukulele, from swinging a baseball bat to calling ducks. They did a fantastic job, and Mrs. Pitt is proud of their progress and confidence in public speaking!
