Lower School News: May 8 – May 12, 2017

Transportation Day at CA

Friday, May 5 was Transportation Day! This lower school wide event had our students researching various modes of transportation and their importance. Each grade level was given a type of transportation—land, sea or air and from there the sky was the limit! Take a look at some of the exciting things our students created! Want to see it in person? Come by and take a look in the main hall, this week only!

Meteorologist Visits CA

Kelly Cox, Meteorologist for News Channel 5 spent some time with our third and fourth grades this past week.  Both 3rd and 4th grades have been studying weather and also got to enhance their knowledge with this special guest. Students were amazed throughout her weather presentation, enjoyed a “weather themed” photo booth activity and also delicious treats created by our cafeteria staff.  What a fun-filled rainy day!!!

3rd grade

The third graders enjoyed the unveiling of Sgt. Carter – Frank Sutton. They learned a lot about a local celebrity and enjoyed watching clips of the Goner Pyle TV show. CA Teacher and local artist Scott Wise was the artist who built the statue. The students really enjoyed attending the ceremony.

1st Grade

Mrs. Lynn’s First grade class read the script for Inspector Hopper (our story this week).
Reader’s Theater is a dramatic presentation of a written work in script form. We focus on reading text with expressive voices and gestures. We do not memorize lines. This helps make comprehending the text meaningful and fun for the student.

Science News

First graders investigate “How Things Move”.  We discussed Newton’s Laws of Motion.  We experimented with moving a golf ball from one place to another using tubes.  Students quickly realized by “adding an incline” the distance and speed would increase. We discussed EDP (Engine Design Process).

Second grades investigate Matter and Mass.  Using Balance Scales we equalized mass differences using a variety of items including packing peanuts, paper clips, macaroni noodles, toothpicks, etc.    We compared the different mass of items, determining which items had more density.

Third graders review Weather phenomenon, in anticipation of their special guest speaker – meteorologist Kelly Cox from News Channel  5.  We created tornados using 2 liter bottles, and watched the vortex form. We reviewed the water cycle, and precipitation forms.

Box Tops

This is a reminder that CA collects Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.
