Lower School News: March 21 – March 25, 2016

3rd Grade

Third grade students ROCKED out our recent studies of minerals & rocks! Students learned through individual research using various websites and books, a group project illustrating and labeling rocks & minerals using candies, crafting of their personal birthstone, making rock candy and a chalk dyed cover (used as their research cover).

The third grade had a karate presentation today from Baize Karate, instructor Brian Baize.  He told the history of karate and demonstrated several techniques. This presentation went along with our current unit on Asia.

The third grade had a Ms. Grace Lee, present a program on South Korea. She is demonstrating the proper way to bow.  She gave a very informative presentation of Korean life. The students enjoyed the lesson and learned a lot!

Third grade Math Lab students learned how to measure line segments to the nearest inch and half inch. They were up to the challenge as the “measured up” with their rulers!

2nd Grade

In second grade Math Lab, students learned about ancient Chinese puzzles called tangrams.  It begins with a square which is then cut into seven standard pieces. They created pictures using all seven tans. The tans must touch, but none may overlap. They created people, foxes, swans, houses, boats, rabbits, and other interesting objects!  It was challenging and fun!

This week in Science Lab 2nd Graders concluded their unit on water habitats.  We discussed disasters associated with water habitats, specifically oil spills.  We created an oil spill using motor oil, and vegetable oil.  We dipped feathers in the water to demonstrate the effect on birds and water fowl.

The second grade classes of Clarksville Academy enjoyed a fun-filled day in Nashville on Tuesday, March 8th. As part of the program, “Is it a Fiddle or a Violin”, students were able to tour the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Schermerhorn Symphony Center. Following the program, they enjoyed a wonderful lunch at The Old Spaghetti Factory.

4th Grade

Our fourth graders continue working with the student teachers at APSU on movement activities, folk dance, and gymnastics. Learning and fun for all!

4-H Speech

Bentley Clift represented CA at the Sub-Regional Speech competition and placed 1st out of all 4th grade representatives. Way to go Bentley!

FUSE

4th grade FUSE students enjoyed a first aid lesson with nursing students from Austin Peay State University.

5th Grade

5th grade FUSE Social Studies students worked in partners as they sequenced the main events of the War of 1812.

Class Photos

Fidelity School Portraits will be on campus Tuesday, March 22nd, to take Lower School class / group photos.

Fidelity DOES NOT require pre-ordering for the class photo.

Ordering will be done through Fidelity’s online gallery with an access code requirement. Teachers and parents will be given the code and may order an 8×10 hard copy or an 8×10 high-resolution digital image, each for $12. The website, access codes, and instructions for ordering will be given out a few days following the photo sessions.

 

Jump Rope for Heart

The lower school is excited to be participating in the Annual Jump Rope for Heart program again this year. This fun event raises money for the American Heart Association. Our goal is raise $2500 for this wonderful organization. All donations are due by March 22. Please support our lower school students in this program!

 

Steak Dinner

The annual Evening with Friends, Steak Dinner will be held on April 16 at 6PM in the gym. This annual event raises money for our annual fund. Choir students in grades 3-12 will perform a wonderful medley of songs but various musical Legends! It is a night you do not want to miss! Invitations will be mailed soon! Tickets go on sale March 14.

 

Photos

Many of you take photos at various events and activities around school. We encourage you to share these with our Marketing/PR office as well as our yearbook staff by using the email photos@clarksvilleacademy.com. This email is designed for students and parents to send pictures taken throughout the school year. We encourage you to caption your photo or to write a sentence or two with the event name, students pictured in the photo and the date it was taken. We do not guarantee that every photo will be used, but we look forward to seeing your pictures.

Box Tops & Campbell’s Labels

This is a reminder that CA collects Campbell’s labels and Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.
