Lower School News: April 3 – April 7, 2017

Kindergartener

Kindergarten students completed their study of 3-Dimensional shapes by building cubes out of marshmallows and straws. They have learned that a cube has 6 sides and 8 vertices.  They also studied the 3-D shapes of cone, sphere, and cylinder. The students enjoyed recognizing these objects around our school this week.

First Grade

First Graders are waiting for their chrysalis to become butterflies.

Art News

Last week marked Clarksville Academy’s Annual Grandparents Day and as per tradition our Lower School Cougars put up an impressive Art Show! This year the theme was “Abstract Sculptures”. Each student and grade created a 3 dimensional sculpture. Our PreK, Kindergarten and First graders create Collaborative Sculptures, meaning that the pieces were combined to create a unified piece of art. Second and Fifth grade create Relief Sculptures, where the sculpture remains attached to the background. Third and Fourth graders made standing Free Form sculptures from some very interesting materials, such as hangers, hosiery, baby food jars, paper mache and noodles! We really do have such great talent and creative energy embedded in our Lower School Cougars minds and hearts!

Science News

First graders investigate properties of matter, predicting what will sink and what will float. We discussed density and buoyancy.

Second graders created moon phases using “Oreo Cookies”. We constructed quarter moons, half moons, full moons, and new moons.

Third graders investigated Force and Motion.  Our vocabulary words were Position, Distance, Motion, and Speed. Students raced “hot wheels” cars and identified beginning position, ending position, speed (in relationship to their opponent), and measured distance traveled.

FUSE News

In FUSE this week, 4th-grade students created their own board games as a summative project for the novel Hatchet. Students designed their own game boards, cards, pieces, and directions. They ended the project by playing their games together. They did an amazing job working together, organizing their ideas, and being creative.

Box Tops

This is a reminder that CA collects Box Tops through our CAA.  The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects.  Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone!  Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.
