2nd Grade
Mrs. Phillips’ class has a first year CA student from Denmark. We wrote Pen Pal letters to her classmates back in Denmark. The teacher in Denmark will be able to translate the letters to the students. We are hoping we will receive letters back from her classmates!
Art
There is a Landscape exhibit up in the main building, on the walls leading to the library. We have some desert landscapes created by second graders, ‘stamped’ landscapes by the fourth graders and Asian landscapes by the fifth graders. Come see all the wonderful projects being created!
Science
First graders concluded their unit on Plants are Living Things. We reviewed stems and leaves. We reviewed our science vocabulary: observe, classify, infer, predict, investigate, graph and record. We classified seeds in multiple ways- size, color, and shape.
Second graders investigate how far things move. We discussed Force and Motion. We determined what slows motion down-Friction. We incorporated STEM elements and measured relative distances, engineering our test runs to compare shapes of objects. We recorded our data to infer distances of comparable objects.
Third graders reviewed plant life and when it begins. We dissected Lima bean seeds to observe germination and seed embryos. We identified seed coats, roots, and leaves. We reviewed life cycles of plants and noted difference between stages.
Spanish
In Spanish Enrichment, 1st grade students worked on learning their numbers in Spanish. When a number was called they formed it out of play-doh.
FUSE
4th grade FUSE students created 3D cell models for Science class. Students demonstrated their understanding of plant and animal cell parts, as well as their creativity with their finished projects!
3rd grade
Third graders demonstrated their knowledge of plants by creating and presenting plant (parts of a plant) diagrams. Students also worked in teams to make flowering and conifer plant life cycle displays.
In Science, 5th grade FUSE students were treated to a visit by Austin Peay professor, Dr. Chad Brooks. Dr. Brooks spoke to 5th graders about the types of cells and how they work. Students enjoyed the hands-on demonstrations he brought with him as well!
2nd Grade
On Thursday, September 28th, the second graders had a very special visit from author/illustrator, Christie Ray. She introduced the students to her most famous character, Eliza, and she also brought along some new characters that are featured in her new books. She shared how she writes and illustrates each story. What an inspiring visit!
