Steak Dinner

The 30th Annual Steak Dinner will be held on April 13, 2019 on Procter Court.  Tickets are $85 and on sale now.  Reservations can be made by visiting: http://j9f.23f.mytemp.website/steak-dinner/.  Reservations and tickets can be made online or by contacting Kari Turner in the main office 647-6311.  Tickets must be paid in full for reservations to be valid.  Tickets must be purchased by Friday, April 5.

Signature Painting
This year we have had a Rob Hendon original donated to Steak Dinner.  For a chance to win this painting, patrons may make a $25 donation and be entered to win.  Donations can be made in the front office.  You do not have to present to win. Drawing will be made the night of the event.  You may also contact Sally Allen to purchase your chance to win.

Anthony Taylor Productions will record the Steak Dinner performance this year.  Flash Drives with the performance on them are available for pre-order at $25 each.  Please contact Sally Allen to purchase yours. Please pre-order your video by April 11.

 

Prom

You are invited to attend the Prom Grand March on Saturday, April 6 at 5PM at the Bruce Convention Center, 303 Conference Center Dr., Hopkinsville, KY.  This annual tradition is a great way to support our Junior & Seniors on their big night.

 

Key Club

To begin their spring break, seven officers of the Clarksville Academy Key Club attended the Kentucky- Tennessee District Convention in Franklin, TN on March 22nd – 24th.  Those attending were club members: Akanee Angel, Ellyn Darke, Victoria Hilfiker, Jackson Trotter, Hannah Weatherford, Brandon Walker, and Christy Zheng, along with Key Club Advisors, Denise Walker and Lisa Little.

During the convention, club members participated in competitions, a Ronald McDonald House service project, leadership workshops, formal election caucus, and socials events. During the Saturday evening awards ceremony, Brandon Walker received the Ira Gladson Scholarship of Excellence and Christy Zheng won 3rd place in the poster contest. On Sunday Morning during the Governor’s Farewell Brunch, it was announced that Akanee Angel was elected to be the new District Treasurer. Akanee was installed by outgoing District Treasurer and fellow CA club member, Christy Zheng. Additionally, Ellyn Darke was installed as the new Lt. Governor for Division 15 by outgoing Lt. Governor and fellow CA club member Brandon Walker. Our Key Club has been blessed and honored to have wonderful, strong young adults that are willing to take on leadership roles and serve their community through their active involvement in Key Club.

A special thanks goes to Mrs. Amanda Pitt, it was mentioned multiple times throughout the convention by the students that they were well prepared for speeches and presentations due to lessons from her Speech class.

Giving

In the last few weeks, Clarksville Academy has received some wonderful gifts from donor families.  Dr. George & Katie Lee have graciously purchased a new AED machine for our campus.  This device will allow us faster response time if we have a student or staff member in need.

Bill & Kerri Mace donated the materials and labor to build an addition to our baseball facility at the Sports Complex.  This new facility will feature a 30X30 foot weight room and a 50X85 foot hitting facility.  This will enable us to add 3 full length batting cages, a full weight room and turn our current facility into a pitching lab.  The entire project is donated by the Mace family.

Jon & Christina Clark recently donated lights to be used in the hallway of the main building.  These lights have already brightened this space so much!  CAPA (Clarksville Academy Parent Association) purchased new tiles for the hallway and these were installed prior to break by Lloyd Hinote, Les Allen, WD Henson, and Mike Veitenheimer.

National Merit Finalist

Clarksville Academy has two seniors, Cheyenne Deibert and Christy Zheng, who moved from Semi-finalists to Finalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program.  It is an incredible achievement to be named a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, as only 15,000 students nationwide receive this honor.  They will continue to compete for National Merit Scholarships.

Key Club

Over the weekend at the District 15 Spring Rally, Ellyn Darke was elected Lieutenant Governor for Divison 15 of the Kentucky -Tennessee District Key Clubs. She will be pinned in a ceremony at the District Convention on March 24, by outgoing Lieutenant Governor Brandon Walker. CA Key Club is honored to currently have 2 key club members serving in the K-T District Board. in addition to Brandon Walker, Christy Zheng has served as District Treasurer. Both have been great servant-leaders in the board. Several Key club members will attend District Convention In Franklin, TN on the weekend of March 22nd – 24th. Akanee Angel plans to run for the position of District Treasurer, in hopes to fill Christy’s seat.

Intermediate School Spring Dance

The IS will host their annual Spring Dance on Friday, March 15 in the Aux Gym from 7-10PM.  The dress is informal (Sunday best—no jeans) and is $10 at the door.  All proceeds support the Teacher in Residence Program in Africa this summer.  Clarksville Academy students in grades 6-8 are invited to attend.

Giving

Over the past few months, our teachers have been hard at work raising funds for the Africa Teacher In Residence program.  This summer, May25-June 6 thirteen Clarksville Academy teachers will travel to South Africa.  The UK International Tours partnered with Clarksville Academy to offer a once in a lifetime opportunity to share their expertise with township schools to support the educational mission by co-teaching in classrooms, modeling best practices, mentoring teachers, offering professional development by building a bridge to connect purposeful and progressive curriculum.  They will collaborate with South African peers as they celebrate their values, strengthen their teaching practices, and connect creatively and culturally.  To help teachers participate in this wonderful trip, a variety of fundraising has taken place.  In the fall the teachers sponsored a bake sale, the upcoming spring IS dance and Friday’s Sock Hop are just a few of the ways the teachers have worked to raise funds.  Friday’s Sock Hop raised over $1500!    If you are interested in supporting this trip, please contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Youth in Government

This past weekend we had 35 upper school students travel to Nashville to participate in Youth in Government.  Our group saw much success at this conference—some of it even school record breaking!  We are so proud of all our Youth In Government participants. Below are a few highlights:

• Congratulations to Cheyenne Deibert, Will Mabry, and Shaan Patel for earning one of the outstanding bill awards
• Haley Shannon for earning an outstanding delegate award from the Blue House of Representatives
• Hailey Ray and Selby Shipley – the CA lawyer team who made it to the final case of the Supreme Court – first in CA history!
• Governor Endorsed the bill of Elvis, Griffin, and Jeremiah – as well as – the bill of Molly Clark, Jiya Patel, and Katie Thrash
• The conference lobbyists endorsed the bill of Caroline Pennington, Caroline Giles, and Josh Wendell
• From the Blue House – congratulations to Nikki Harnage and Kaylea Roberts who had their bill pass the house and the senate!
• Special shout out to our awesome officers at the conference – Cheyenne Deibert, Maggie Clark, and Ben Truex! They were exceptional in their leadership roles at the conference.

We are so proud of both of our Basketball teams for all their successes this season!  Both fought hard all season long and were able to compete in the State Tournament.  Our girls team made school history and we are so proud of all their firsts this season!

This week our Lower School is celebrating Dr. Seuss Week!  There are lots of fun days planned! See a list below!

• Monday 2/25
  Mixed Up Monday – wear your polka dot leopard with your Zisser-Zazzer-Zuzz, stripes, plaids, or checkers with fuzz.
• Tuesday 2/26
  Top Hat Tuesday – Wear something silly on top of your head “Wear a crazy hat or wig,” the cat said.
• Wednesday 2/27
  Wacky Wednesday – wear your clothes backwards, inside out, or mismatched. Wild hair and mustaches are encouraged!
• Thursday 2/28
  Snoozy Thurzzzzzday – Some days it is hard to get out of bed. No need to get dressed. Wear pajamas instead.
• Friday 3/1
  Fox in Socks Day – wear crazy socks!!Also on Friday, there will be a Sock Hop after school for our Lower School Students.  This will take place from 3-5PM and you should RSVP to your child’s teacher.  Cost is $10 and money raised will go to support our Teacher in Residence Program in Africa this summer.

Annual Giving

Our Annual Fund giving has increased this year, but we still haven’t met our goal.  In order to cover the needs of our school, we continue to need annual funds.  This year annual funds are being directed to Security upgrades, Staff Professional Development, and facility improvements to name just a few.  As we continue to look ahead, we have a few projects on the horizon.  Our goal is to replace the metal doors at the entrances to our main building and Activities Center.  These new doors would include a automated locking system and card swipe entrances.  This comes at a cost over $200,000.  We would also like to add additional parking to the front of campus, which will require major dirt work and a retaining wall.  This would add approximately 20-30 much-needed parking spaces and come at a cost of $25,000.    If you are interested in supporting either of these projects or would like to contribute to annual giving, please contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Basketball
Both girls and boys Basketball advance to the State Tournament this week!  Congratulations to our girls team for winning in the first round of the state tournament on Tuesday! They play Harding Academy in the semi-finals in Memphis on Friday.

Wednesday the boys team will travel to Memphis to take on Harding in the first round of the tournament.  We are so proud of both teams and wish them continued success!  Stay tuned to our social media for updates on where they play next!  Congratulations to our All Region Team winners—Sydneey Boykin and Daniel Loos. We are proud of everyone on both teams for such fantastic seasons!

Wrestling
CA’s wrestling team is back for the 2018-2019 season and got off to a great start!  Freshman Miller Barnett placed in the top 8 at the State Tournament in Franklin this weekend!  Way to go Miller!

Book Drive 

Our student representatives of the Mayor’s Youth Council will be hosting a Book Drive Feb. 19th – 28th to campaign for Child Literacy. Tennessee has one of the lowest adult literacy rates in the nation, and studies have shown that extensive attention to literacy in children has led to a decrease in adult illiteracy rates. The goal of this drive is to collect children’s books from grade levels 1-5 that will be donated to Elementary Schools around Clarksville. Please consider contributing to this campaign, and send in as many books as possible. There will be collections boxes located in the library and with Mrs. Turnage.

Re-Enrollment

Don’t forget our deadline for Re-Enrollment is February 19.  Beginning in February, we will review classroom enrollment number and waitlists for grades could be created. Re-Enrollment must take place online through PowerSchool.  If you have trouble re-enrolling your child, please contact Cara Miller, at cmiller@clarksvilleacademy.com.   Tuition Assistance applications are due March 1.  Tuition assistance will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis this year and review of applications will begin this week.  We encourage everyone wanting tuition assistance to apply now.

 

Winter Break

Don’t forget, winter break begins on Friday and will last through Monday.  Students will not report Friday or Monday.  School resumes Tuesday, February 19. Enjoy this time of relaxation!

Both girls and boys Basketball advance to the Regional Tournament this week!  Tuesday our girls will take on FRA at 6PM on Procter Court.  Wednesday the boys team battle it out with BGA at 6PM on Procter Court.  Reminder—Season passes are not valid and admission is $7 at the door.
Congratulations to our Girls All District winners—Sydneey Boykin, Diamond Bryant, Makayla Artis, and Nichole Hunter.  Girls All Tournament members were Sydneey Boykin and Ashley Roberts.  Congratulations to the boys All District winners—Daniel Loos, Preston Moody, and Nolan Johnson.  Daniel Loos was named the District MVP of the regular season! Daniel and Nolan were also named to the All Tournament team.  We are proud of everyone on both teams for such fantastic seasons!

Wrestling

Our Annual Fund giving has increased this year, but we still haven’t met our goal.  In order to cover the needs of our school, we continue to need annual funds.  This year annual funds are being directed to Security upgrades, Staff Professional Development, and facility improvements to name just a few.  As we continue to look ahead, we have a few projects on the horizon.  Our goal is to replace the metal doors at the entrances to our main building and Activities Center.  These new doors would include a automated locking system and card swipe entrances.  This comes at a cost over $200,000.  We would also like to add additional parking to the front of campus, which will require major dirt work and a retaining wall.  This would add approximately 20-30 much-needed parking spaces and come at a cost of $25,000.    If you are interested in supporting either of these projects or would like to contribute to annual giving, please contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Re-Enrollment

Don’t forget our deadline for Re-Enrollment is February 19.  Beginning in February, we will review classroom enrollment number and waitlists for grades could be created. Re-Enrollment must take place online through PowerSchool.  If you have trouble re-enrolling your child, please contact Cara Miller, at cmiller@clarksvilleacademy.com.   Tuition Assistnce applications are due March 1.  Tuition Assistnce will be awarded on a first come, first serve basis this year and review of applications will begin this week.  We encourage everyone wanting tuition assistance to apply now.

 

Kindergarten Preview

All current PreK students and parents are invited to a Kindergarten preview on Monday, February 4 at 3:00 P.M. This event will give you a sneak peek into our Kindergarten program.  Join us for refreshments, class tours, and important information about the 2019-2020 Kindergarten year.

 

White Columns

Our annual White Columns magazine is here!  It should arrive in your mailbox this week.  We have lots of extra issues and need your help!  If your place of business would be willing to display our magazine in their lobby, please contact us!  We would like to place 3-5 copies in a variety of businesses in town!  Contact Rebecca Beach, at rbeach@clarksvilleacademy.com to arrange for us to drop them off!  Thank you!

FBLA

Jackson Trotter competed in the 2019 Regional Leadership Conference for FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). Jackson placed 1st in our region and he had the highest score across the whole state of Tennessee on the Introduction to Financial Math test.

IS Basketball
The Intermediate School boys’ varsity team won the championship of the James C. Haile State Tournament. Great job by this team!

Varsity Basketball
This week is our District Tournament!  Join us Tuesday, February 5 when the girls compete in the first round of the District Tournament.  Game begins at 6:00 PM on Procter Court.  On Wednesday, our boys’ team will also play at 6:00 PM on Procter Court.  We will host the District Tournament this weekend.  Make sure to follow us on social media for up to date game times.  Reminder—Sports Passes are not eligible for the District Games.  Game tickets are $5 at the door.

ColorCycle

We are excited to announce a new conservation program at our school called Crayola ColorCycle – an amazing program devised to repurpose used markers rather than sending them to landfills. All around Clarksville Academy, students and teachers will be collecting used markers, highlighters and dry erase markers in drop-off boxes. Please help support our efforts by sending in any used markers you may have around the house- even non-Crayola brands. Thank you in advance for participating and furthering our school’s conservation efforts!

When inclement weather prevents us from coming to school or causes us to be late, school closing information can be found on News Channels 2, 4, 5, and Fox 17, the Leaf Chronicle and Clarksville Now.  We will also email and send text notification.  Our website will have any school closing information posted as well.  We will do our best to quickly assess the situation and make an announcement.  We do not follow Montgomery County School System in these closings.

We have many ways to give at Clarksville Academy.  One area of giving is the Clarksville Academy Foundation.  The CA Foundation was created in the summer of 2018 and incorporates our endowed funds. Endowments like Procter and Dan Burden Scholarship are now part of the CA Foundation.  On January 12 we hosted a Leanne Morgan Comedy Show with all proceeds benefiting the CA Foundation.  I’m happy to announce that was raised $17,938 at this one event!  Foundation funds must reach a specific level, determined by the Foundation Board before any monies are spent.  Upon maturity, only the interest from these funds will be used.   If you have any questions about giving, please contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

Lower School Robotics

This weekend, two CA Lower School Robotics teams attended the West TN First Lego League Championship in Memphis.  They put their “INTO ORBIT” STEM knowledge to the test against 48 teams of which very few were from lower schools. They competed in four categories, Robot Missions, Robot Design, Project and Core Values.  CyberCougars, (Jack Catellier, Jay Patel, Evan Mixon, Shelby Maynard, Will Copeland, Jackson Gardner, Nathan Reifenstahl ), placed 24th in the Robot Missions and did well in the other categories.  CougarCubs, (Cammie Johnston, Liya Abubucker, Madeline Dikeman, Parker Kent, Carmen Skaggs, Izzy Salmeron),  placed 38th in the Robot Missions and did well in the other categories.   Coaches Julie Catellier, Joanne Askew and Mentor, Caroline Salmeron, are so proud on how these two lower school teams represented Clarksville Academy.

Athletics

IS Basketball–The Intermediate School boys’ varsity team made it to the championship of the James C. Haile State Tournament. We will play Saturday, February 2, at 10:30 AM.

Varsity Girls Basketball—Sydneey Boykin hit the 1000-point mark in basketball last week.  On Friday night she was presented with a banner in the gym in her honor.

Forensics

Investigator Sergeant Mark Wojnarek and Angela Christian of the MCSO spoke to forensic science students about the concept of preconceived notions.  Sergeant Wojnarek is the commander of the sheriff’s office forensic science team, and Angela Christian is a member of the team.  They shared information about crime scene investigation basics and what the field of forensics entails from a law enforcement point of view.

Photography Winners

Jacob Robison and Midge Barger’s photography was selected to represent the Middle Tennessee Regional Student Art Exhibition at Belmont University.  Their work was chosen from 790 entries.  Only 96 works of art were chosen for this show.  Their work has been on display the past month at Belmont University’s Leu Center for Visual Arts.

      

Bowling

Congratulations to our Bowling team for the run at the State Tournament!  Congratulations to Leah Hayes for finishing 3rd in the DII Bowling State Tournament and being selected at Miss Bowler of the Year for the 2nd time!

Congratulations to the CA Boys Bowling Team (Tyler Lucas, Luke Poston, Tyler Jones, Zach Austin, Dalton Daniels, Mitch Westerbeck, and Bryson Batson) on their DII Bowling State Tournament Appearance! We are so proud of all these students and their hardwork this year!

FCA

FCA would like to thank those who donated and everyone who participated in our Christmas Dress Down Day. The money raised fulfilled all of our Christmas projects! We would also like to thank the Lower School teachers and students for decorating the Christmas cards for the nursing homes, they were beautiful.

Christmas Projects:

• 353 beautifully decorated Christmas cards to three local nursing home residents.

Annual Giving

Over the course of our first semester one way we have used our annual funds is to purchase a much needed software system for our enrollment management offices.  This new system will help us track students as they inquire about CA and follow them throughout the enrollment process.  It will allow our admissions office to better serve our future and current students.  This is one of the many things that doesn’t merit a tuition increase, but is best served by our annual funds.

As you can see, we have already made strong use of the annual funds already committed, but we need your help to continue to improve our school.  We have plans for additional professional development opportunities, emerging needs like AED machines, technology needs, updating our library to be a Makerspace, and continuing to boost our security with upgraded cameras, mag strike doors and more.  If you have any questions about annual giving, please contact Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.
