    Fall Festival

    A big thank you to all the parents, teachers and students who helped to make our annual fall festival a huge success! This annual event benefits all our classrooms, as well as CAA (PTO), athletic teams, and clubs. It takes a lot of support from everyone and we appreciate it! Thank you to Candice Wall for once again chairing this event and making it the best yet!

    Our first annual Scarecrow competition got off to a great start with some really fantastic entries! First grader Keith Gosa won first place for his Darth Vader Scarecrow, while Mrs. Baldwin’s Lower School Art Club with their Charlie Brown Scarecrow tied with Mr. Neitzke’s Van Gough for second place.

    School Photos

    Retake Day is Nov. 3 for anyone who did not have their photo taken during school photo day. Students in Lower School will also have their class photos taken on this day.

     

    Reminder

    There will be no school on Monday, November 7 due to Teacher Inservice. All of our teachers are traveling to Chattanooga to take place in the TAIS conference. Also there will be no school on Friday, November 11 due to observance of Veteran’s Day.

     

    Veteran’s Day

    We will host our annual Veteran’s Day program on Thursday, November 10 at 1:30. All are welcome to attend.

     

    Green Committee

    Erica Smith, Gina Goostree & Karen Dirksen represented CA’s Green Committee at Clarksville-Montgomery County’s annual Green Banquet.  CA was recognized in achieving their “Green Recertification” for 2016.  CA continues to grow and improve our Green Program through new initiatives and the continuation/expanding of our recycling program.  Lee Smith (Mrs. Smith’s spouse), of American Snuff Co. works as our school’s mentor to continually look for ways to improve our program.

    Poinsettias

    Do you need poinsettias to make your home look festive for the holidays? Beginning, November 9th, the Junior class will be selling assorted sizes of red or white poinsettias. These plants will be delivered right before the Thanksgiving break and will come straight from the grower. The Juniors appreciate your support as they fundraise for the prom!

     

    After School Enrichment

    We are pleased to announce that our After School Enrichment program will begin next week! We have two wonderful offerings—Cursive Writing with Mrs. Marla Clemments and Drawing with Pencils and Pastels with Mrs. Shelley Holt. Registration is online here.

  • CBL: OCT 2016

    October CBL Summary

    Our October Challenge Based Learning day found our groups investigating designated Essential Questions, involved in Guiding Activities, and INNOVATIVELY collaborating, narrowing their groups’ scope to define their Challenges.

    Our Health and Fitness group – continues to collect data regarding usage of the Bcycles, with the hopes of securing a grant to expand locations. They INNOVATIVELY surveyed some parents who were attending Parent Teacher conferences collecting data (with a set goal of 200 surveys). Two groups collaborated (the research team and the grant writing team) as they make progress on their grant submission.

    Our Mentoring group (Christmas/Beach) having divided into 2 teams, visited APSU and consulted with professors and students continuing to investigate mentoring and advising. They are assessing the value mentors have had on their own lives, with the desire to form relationships providing mentorship to others.

    The Food Security Group (Burkhart/Williams) – volunteered at Loaves and Fishes, organizing kitchen items, assisting with lunch preparation, and made a donation to the Loaves and Fishes Pantry of over 200 canned good items.

    The Beautification group has established their Challenge, and have begun implementing their Solution. They have partnered with Montgomery County Animal Control to create a mural on the exterior wall. They have sketches drawn, and were creating a layout/gridwork of the sketches.

    Our Food Production Group (Boyd/Walker) continues work at the Brandon Hill Community Garden tending to Cool Weather crops planted on our September CBL day. Those crops, turnip greens, kale, etc. were cooked and served at a Community Event held at Brandon Hills on Saturday Oct 22, which was National Make a Difference Day.

    Coach Magrans’ Recreation group Team Pura Vida hosted a Ribbon Cutting Event at the newly installed Disc Golf Course. They are already receiving feedback on the course design and skill level. A tournament was held on Saturday with participants from surrounding counties and states. Student designed Commemorative Discs were distributed to each student, county leaders and representatives who attended the Ribbon Cutting.

    First Responders (Stonesfier) had a guest speaker representing EMT’s from the Clarksville area, informing them of the needs of our dedicated First Responders.

    Our Military Support group under the direction of Coach Bragg, painted hearts for the Arts for Hearts organization. The hearts will be fired and glazed and distributed at our local Veterans home by their program director, to Veterans who resided there. These hearts will serve as a visual reminder of how much their service to our country is appreciated. Coach Bragg’s group also worked on their INNOVATIVE Fall Festival Booth which will serve as a fundraiser with a Military theme…Bootcamp Obstacle Course.

    Mrs. Little and Mrs. Lindsey’s Environment group continues to assist Dr. Dwayne Estes and APSU’s Prairie Restoration Project at a piece of property recently added to Dunbar Cave State Park. They spent their day removing invasive species, and plan on propagating existing prairie species next month.

    Our Transportation group (Hood/Moore) is planning an event at an upcoming assembly, as they investigate Distracted Driving. The group installed a counter near our Sports Complex that will serve to collect data.  They will host a Fall Festival Booth fundraiser NO HOCUS POCUS…TURN OFF THE PHONE AND FOCUS, in conjunction with National Teen Safe Driving Week.

    Our Youth Matters group (Bauer) continues to investigate ways Youth can positively impact our community. They are investigating ideas that utilize Youth in INNOVATIVE ways focusing on incorporating Youth in 2 ways…both using Youth as mentors and exploring ways to assist Youth in our community.

    Performing Arts group (Pitt/Hollis) used their talents and performed Blanchfield Army Hospital for a Ft. Campbell Community event, and also performed at Dogwood Bend Residential Center. They volunteered at the Roxy Regional Theater as they continue investigating and utilizing guiding resources.

  • Upper School News: October 24 – October 28, 2016

    Rotary Park

    On Friday, Coach Danny Magrans’ Challenge Based Learning group joined leaders from Montgomery County for the ribbon cutting ceremony at Rotary Park’s new Disc Golf Course. These students worked tirelessly to make this new addition a realty and we are so proud of them!

    Juniors & Seniors

  • Intermediate School News: October 24 – October 28, 2016

    Cross Country

    On Sat the IS Cross Country Teams finished up an amazing season with their final meet at the TN State Middle School Championship.  This was the hardest and most competitive meet these athletes have run all season.  On the girls side there were 308 runners on the line when the gun sounded and Abagale Hay had an outstanding race with a time of 15:45 on the 2 mile course.

    The boys lined up with 322 other runners from all across the state and each one of them ran their hearts out.  Mason Woodrick just edged out Luke Page with a time of 13:12.63 with Luke’s time of 13:12.86.  Beckham Sonnabend was just behind them with a time of 13:45.20. Congratulations to these students!

    6th grade Science

    In Sixth Grade students are learning about tectonic plate movement and the three boundaries created by this movement. Students simulated convergent, divergent and transform boundaries by pulling, pushing and twisting foil to represent plate movements.

    Social Studies

    7th and 8th grade Social Studies classes will participate in the first ever State of Tennessee Student Mock Election this coming Monday, October 24th. Our Election results will be reported to the Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office along with other participating schools in the State. Our hope is that students will enjoy being part of the election process, and develop a sense of civic responsibility. More information to come after our election results have been reported.

  • Lower School News: October 24 – October 28, 2016

    3rd grade

    Third grade students are certainly “Falling for Inherited Traits”! Students participated in cross-curricular activities in Science, Math, & Technology through their study of Inherited Traits (and personal connections to the traits), data representation, and use of technology by creating a Haiku deck slide show presentation.

    Third grade students worked in partners to interpret frequency and tally tables then transferred data into bar graphs. Students participated in discussion and shared explanations of the bar graphs with their class.

    Kindergarten

    Members of the Clarksville area Red Cross stopped by to visit with our Kindergarten classes and discuss the many ways they help people throughout the world. Children asked questions regarding hurricane Matthew and the Red Cross response to it. The students then donated water and other items that were collected during our Homecoming week.

    Math Lab

    Students in second grade learned about fact families using addition and subtraction facts. They wrote their facts on jack-o-lanterns.

    Third graders worked on organizing data in tally tables using flavors of skittles. Then, they graphed the results vertically and horizontally on bar graphs. It was a tasty math lab treat.

    FUSE

    5th grade dropped off all of the games donated by 5th grade students as part of their Homecoming Door Decoration theme to A Soldier’s Child Foundation.  This organization provides special birthday celebrations for the children of fallen soldiers.

    Jr Dance Junior Dance Fall Mini Camp

    October 25 and October 27
    3:00 – 4:00 (immediately following school)
    Each dancer will be picked up in their classroom by a Varsity Dancer
    Parents need to pick up at 4:00 pm in front of the main school building
    Cost is $40 which includes a t-shirt to wear to the performance at the Oct 28 football game.  If your dancer came to summer camp you do not need to pay this fee.  Please register by Oct 21 to Theresia Burchett, at tburchett@clarksvilleacademy.com.

    Fall Festival

    The annual Fall Festival will take place on THIS SATURDAY October 29 from 10AM-3PM on campus. There will be many games, activities, prizes, and auction items for all! We encourage you to bring your family and friends and enjoy this wonderful event!

     

    NEW THIS YEAR

    This year we are adding a Scarecrow Contest to our Fall Festival Activities. Students are invited to create to a Scarecrow that will be attached to a fence at the front of campus. Scarecrows should be constructed with durable materials (as they will be outside) and all items secured to them. Each must have support for the body which will be wired to a fence. Entrants should provide materials for attaching it to the fence. All entries should be installed between Noon on Friday, October 28 and 9:50AM on Saturday, October 29. Entries should be removed on Monday, October 31st at 3PM. (We ask all entries remain on campus through noon on Monday, October 31st.) Judging will begin at 10AM on Oct 29 and run through 1:30PM that day. Festival Participants will judge the entries. Questions regarding this new contest can be sent to Sally Allen at sallen@clarksvilleacademy.com.

    Be sure you are planning to be at the Fall Festival Silent Auction in the gym to bid on some of the awesome, one-of-a-kind items that have been donated this year. All auctions will end at 2:00pm. You do not have to be present at the end of the auction but it is preferred, especially if you have bid on edible items.

  • Upper School News: October 17 – October 21, 2016

    Biology

    Today in honors biology students dissected grasshoppers.  They identified the body regions and internal organs, and discussed characteristics that make arthropods fit for their environments.

    Animal Science

    The Animal Science class took a field trip to Mr. Bratton’s farm where escorted the students out into the pastures to view his bulls, cows, and calves. Some of the calves were born just 2 weeks ago. He spoke to the students about the need for quality, nutritional feed for the cattle to bring the best price at market. They returned to the hay barn where students got first hand experience at taking core samples of hay. The samples the students took will be sent to the University of Tennessee for a nutritional analysis. Mr. Bratton will give the students a copy of the analysis to view later this semester. To end the trip Mr. Bratton allowed the students to have a little fun with the cattle shoot, and pretending to give vaccinations to cattle.

    Golf

    Congratulations to our Varsity Golfers on their journey to the State Tournament. Wyatt Samuels finished tied for 31st place individually and our girls team came in 5th in the state. This is a great accomplishment for these golfers. We are extremely proud of them!

  • Intermediate School News: October 17 – October 21, 2016

    Science

    Students in sixth grade create three types of rock in a candy lab. Creating metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rocks, using Starburst candies and applying pressure, heat and extreme heat.

    Cross Country

    The IS Cross Country Teams traveled to Percy Warner Park this afternoon to compete in the Nashville Region State Qualifying Meet.All of our IS Cougar runners performed Outstanding.

    On the Girls side we had Abagale Hay (14:46), Myrtle Yates (16:17) and Trinity Catellier (16:58) all set personal records for the 2 mile.

    For the Boys side Mason Woodrick (12:11), Luke Page (12:35), Beckham Sonnabend (13:17) and Finn Shea (14:07) also set personal records for the 2 mile distance.

    It is with great pride to announce that Abagale Hay, Mason Woodrick, Luke Page and Beckham Sonnabend all Qualified for the State Cross Country Championship meet next Sat at the Victor Ash Park in Knoxville, TN.

  • Lower School News: October 17 – October 21, 2016

    First Grade

    First grade students have been traveling on the AP Trolley to APSU for an interactive PE lesson. The students have enjoyed the PE class, but love the trolley!

    Jr Cheer

    The Jr. Cheerleaders will practice on Thursday, October 20th from 2:50 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Their first performance will be Friday, October 21st during half-time. Game time is 7:00 p.m and half-time is usually between 7:30 and 8:00 p.m.

    This annual tradition for Fall Festival takes place immediately prior to the festival opening. Runners should pre-register by Oct 20 and can contact Jerri Bragg at jbragg@clarksvilleacademy.com to register to run or to sponsor the run. Sponsorships begin at $25 and are open to student/family names. For example you could put The Bragg Family or Garrett & Layne Bragg on the shirt or you could add your business—Bragg’s Bags. We invite everyone to contact us about sponsorship opportunities.

    This is a reminder that CA collects Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.
