Honors Biology

Honors Biology students created foldable, play-doh models and a web quest to assist them in learning the various types of transport of molecules across the cell membrane.

 

 

AP Biology

In the Osmosis and Diffusion Lab students used potato cores submersed in various sucrose solutions to determine the osmolarity and water potential. Student then measured if the potatoes absorbed water, secreted water, or had no change in mass. They graphed the collected data and used the graph to determine the point of equilibrium (isotonic solution).

 

FCA

Thanksgiving should be filled with food, fun, fellowship, family, friends…and celebrating our abundant blessings! This year

FCA decide to encourage hungry and hurting souls by donating 25 meals to the Nashville Rescue Mission.

 

Fitness

The girls fitness classes enjoyed the beautiful weather and the B-Cycles!

 

Latin Bowl

On November 16, our 3 Certamen (Latin Bowl) teams all placed today.

Veterans Essay Winner

Caroline Johnston was the Intermediate School winner of the Veteran’s essay. Parker Rice was the Upper School winner.  Congratulations to these students.

 

Choir

Eleven members of Clarksville Academy’s Concert Choir were selected in September to be part of the Montgomery County Honor Choir.  The weekend of November 18-19, the students joined with students from across the county and Ft. Campbell to work on choral music with the director of choirs at Western Kentucky State University.  On Saturday, November 18 at the end of the day, they presented a concert of what they had learned to family and friends.

Congratulations to Ellyn Darke, Ellie Rocconi, Aleisha Whitaker, Shali Griffy, Annalise Martin, Grace Gilland, Michael Mullins, Riley Jenkins, and Colton Woodson on a job well done!

 

Honors English II

10th graders finished reading and writing on Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar.” We had some terrific death scenes performed by students, like Nolan Johnson, below.

Veterans Essay Winner

iLink

iLink students did a variety of Pay it Forward last week.  They read to lower school classes, served as helpers for the movie fun rewards activity, offered PE/recess opportunities to lower school , wrote hundreds of holiday letters to Veterans for the Holidays for Heroes program for and much, much more!

FUSE

The 5th graders recently enjoyed the annual 5th grade trip to the Brandon Spring Group Center at Land Between the Lakes.  The group consisted of 41 students, 10 parent chaperones, and 2 teachers on a 3-day and 2-night adventure.  Students participated in tours of the Homeplace 1850 Farm and the Woodlands Nature Station as well as enjoyed various programs including canoeing, learning about beavers, hiking to a beaver marsh, a pond study, wilderness survival training, building survival shelters, and orienteering using a compass and a topographical map to locate specific points.  Students also showcased their talents at the talent show and finished off night two with a bonfire and smores.  The beautiful weather held off long enough for everyone to have a wonderful trip and experience nature and local wildlife while making a lifetime of memories.

 

3rd Grade

The third graders enjoyed a field trip to Ft. Defiance to learn more about Clarksville’s history. They got see first hand demonstrations about Pioneer life,  the Civil War, and Native American culture from this area. Current CA parent and ’84 graduate, William Parker led the tour.

 

FUSE

4th grade FUSE French classes are learning French Christmas Carols over the next few weeks.  They will then perform these for our PK and K students.

Food Drive

The Jingle Bells Food Drive was an overwhelming success!  We appreciate and thank those who donated for helping to make this food drive such a successful Lower School service project.  Your generous support will help those in need around our city.  Donations were taken to our local Loaves and Fishes center.

 

Thanksgiving Lunch

Today we say thank you to all our students, faculty and families at our Annual Thanksgiving Lunch. Approximately 1,000 people will be served a traditional Thanksgiving lunch in our cafeteria today. We are thankful for each student, each parent, each grandparent and sibling, for each teacher, staff member and administrator at Clarksville Academy.  We wish you all a safe and happy Thanksgiving.

 

Reminder

CA will observe the Thanksgiving holiday beginning Wednesday, Nov 23 through Sunday, November 27.  Classes resume Monday, Nov 28. 

 

After School Enrichment

We are pleased to announce that our After School Enrichment program will begin next week!  We have two wonderful offerings—Cursive Writing with Mrs. Marla Clemments and Drawing with Pencils and Pastels with Mrs. Shelley Holt.  Registration is online here.

Poinsettias

Do you need poinsettias to make your home look festive for the holidays? The Junior class will be selling assorted sizes of red or white poinsettias. These plants will be delivered right before the Thanksgiving break and will come straight from the grower. Order forms can be picked up at the front desk with Mrs. Turnage.The Juniors appreciate your support as they fundraise for the prom!

 

Second Grade

On Tuesday, November 8th, the second graders enjoyed a visit from author and illustrator, Christie Jones Ray. Mrs. Ray described the making of her books, her ideas, her handwritten words, and her watercolor illustrations. She introduced the students to her main character, Eliza, a small whimsical mouse who goes on many adventures around the world. Mrs. Ray’s imagination and beautiful use of sensory details in her stories are inspiring to young writers.

 

On Wednesday, November 2nd, our second graders took a trip to Mansker’s Station in Goodlettsville, TN. The students toured the Bowen House,  one of the oldest structures in Tennessee. They also toured a replica of the original Mansker Station. Students learned about life during the 1700s. This was the culminating activity to their unit on “America Long Ago”.

Third Grade

Third graders having been studying about relationships among living things.  In class, students built several food chains which formed an overall food web from a forest ecosystem. Students identified the Sun as the main source of energy, producers, consumers, predators and prey from their food web.

 

Model UN

The 2016 Tennessee Model United Nations annual conference was held November 11-13 in Murfreesboro, TN. Clarksville Academy had 25 delegates representing the countries of Austria, Dominican Republic 2, Guatemala, Guinea-Bissau, Japan and the Republic of Congo. Additionally Cheyenne Deibert served as the Assistant Secretary General for Peacebuilding Support in the Secretariat. This conference was the biggest ever with 952 students from throughout Tennessee. Friday students spent in Committee presenting and debating their resolutions. The resolutions of Austria and Guinea-Bissau were ranked highly by their committee so that the resolutions made it on to the docket for presentation in their respective White, Blue or Red General Assembly on Saturday. Saturday evening’s social event included native dances by two students from Ibague, Columbia. Donations exceeding $2500 were raised over the weekend make it possible for several dozen students in Ibague, Columbia to attend high school. Sunday’s Plenary session is the largest assembly which combines all three of Saturday’s General Assemblies. We are proud of all the students who participated.

Cheerleaders

On Sunday, October 30, four Clarksville Academy Varsity Cheerleaders were invited to be members of the 2016-17 Varsity Intelligence Team (IT), also known as Varsity IT girls. This is an exclusive team composed of the best and brightest cheerleaders and dancers from across the country. These young ladies were in the 30 selected out of 1000 applicants and Clarksville Academy had four young ladies chosen. This is a Marketing internship that offers valuable experience for college and beyond. The requirements for selection for this program are:

• High School junior or senior
• Minimum GPA of 3.5
• At least 3 years of cheerleading or dance experience
• Superior communication and leadership skills
• Creative and artistic abilities
• Social media experience
• Above all – a positive, hardworking attitude and a passion for cheerleading or dance!

Kindergarten

Kindergarten had the Clarksville Fire Department bring a truck and educate our students on fire safety Wednesday, November 2. They learned the names of some tools that are carried on the fire trucks. One of the fire fighters even dressed in his “turn out gear” for us to see. This helps children to not be scared if they are ever to encounter a real emergency where a fireman has to report.   We appreciate the service and dedication of our local fire fighters.

 

Mrs. Clinard’s class had a special Halloween visitor!

Austin Reigle’s grandmother came dressed as a witch and read to their class. It was a special surprise and even her grandson didn’t recognize her! The children loved this special treat.

 

First Grade Pet Show

The Annual First Grade Pet Show was held last Friday and was a huge success. Thank you to the first grade teachers for planning and implementing a wonderful program. Thank you to our fine arts teachers Mrs. Baldwin & Mrs. Thomas for working with the students on wonderful musical and artistic additions to the show. A big thank you to the students and parents for bringing their favorite pets to school Friday and sharing them with all of us!

 

Sixth Grade

This week in Science, sixth graders created models of different types of volcanoes. Once each model was formed students went outside and created an eruption.  Students wrote lab reports describing the difference in each type of volcano and eruption.

 

Honors Anatomy

Honors anatomy tested the effects of temperature and fatigue on the force of a muscle contraction.  As you can see, they don’t care for the effect of ice on muscles.

 

Interact Club

On Thursday, Nov 3, CA Interact helped serve Manna Café’s Thursday meal. They had support from members of the Noon Club Rotarians, Dr. Adel Saleh, Dr. Bart Lynn, and Mr. Steve Kemmer. Many people enjoyed dinner and the Interact members enjoyed their service!

Spooky Bus

The annual Spooky Bus visited our campus on Monday morning. This bus is designed and painted by Mr. Neitzke’s Upper School Art students. They did a fantastic job!

 

Player of the Week

Julie Parks, from Heritage Bank, and Head Football Coach Todd Hood presents Will Lankford with the Player of The Week Award based on his outstanding performance in final home game against Houston County Friday night, October 28th. Will had his best effort of the year grading 95% and creating huge holes for our running backs. Will also had 10 tackles on the defensive side of the ball and 3 sacks. The Cougars won the region match up 41 to 8. Coach Hood declared “Will played one of the best games that a lineman has ever played here at Clarksville Academy.”  Will was all over the place knocking running backs backwards and making huge blocks for our running backs.. The Cougars ended the season on a high note. The future looks bright for the 2017 season. Thanks for all the great support from our Clarksville Academy family!

 

AP Biology

AP Biology students used 3 different sized  agar cubes on Tuesday to explore the process of cellular diffusion. Students gained a visual example when the “purple” cubes began to change color due to the diffusion of vinegar. Then the students measured, calculated, and graphed the rate of diffusion for each cube.

Later in the week, students began a lab in which they created plastic straw frames and a bubble solution to explore 6 different characteristics of a cell membrane. Some of the characteristics were: self-repair, fluidity, flexibility, and binary fission.

 

Animal Science

Dual Enrollment Animal Science is looking at some of the food products of Goats. The students taste tested of various flavors of Goat cheese. Most of the students have never eaten goat cheese. Most of the students were pleasantly surprised and enjoyed eating it, the favorite flavors being Honey, Garlic and Herb, and Sun dried Tomato and Herb. They also took a short field trip over to Easter Acres Goat farm in Palmyra. They were able to see a Myotonic goat breeding program. Mr. & Mrs. Easter currently have a herd size around 65, that are produced for shows, breeding stock, and meat sales. I have attached pictures of the trip for you.

 

Wellness

The PE Department is taking various classes to McGregor Park to utilize the BCycle Program that CA students helped to get started. Various grades have taken part in this great activity!

 

Dual Enrollment Anatomy

Dual enrollment anatomy students dissected sheep brains. They identified brain regions and cranial nerve pairs.

 

Ceramics

This photo shows the inside view of the ceramic kiln and was taken while unloading some ceramic pieces after a bisque firing at 1800 degrees. The clay pieces were made by Mr. Neitzke’s upper school Ceramic classes. There is often a sense of eager anticipation to see how one’s piece has turned out.

 

Disc Golf

Coach Magrans’ CBL group has spent the last year working toward the opening of a Disc Golf course at a local park. Last week they saw that become a reality with the ribbon cutting at Rotary Park. The first tournament was held the very next day. Way to go Cougars!

6th grade

Sixth Grade student made structures to test during simulations of moderate and severe earthquakes.  They tested different designs, made changes and improvements based on testing their models.  Jello simulated the waves made by earthquakes.

 

Physical Education

The PE Department is taking various classes to McGregor Park to utilize the BCycle Program that CA students helped to get started. Various grades have taken part in this great activity!

 

Social Studies

Coach Trent’s social studies classes held a mock election and debate last week. The results were sent to the Tennessee Secretary of State’s Office to be recorded with all other school participating. Here are the results for our school:

Donald Trump: 86 votes, Hillary Clinton: 32 votes, Gary Johnson: 9 votes, Alyson Kennedy: 4 votes, “Rocky” Roque De La Fuente: 2 votes, Jill Stein: 2 votes

Third Grade

Third grade students made Patriotic Pumpkins to show what they are studying in social studies. Students were asked to pick someone between 1400-1800 and recreate that person as well as give an oral report on them. They did a fantastic job!
