Youth In Government
The 64th Annual YMCA Youth In Government four day Tristar conference was held in our state Capitol, in Nashville, from March 30-April 2, 2017. There were 750 students from around the state in attendance, including eleven from the Clarksville Academy: Garrett Burger, Joey Darke, Cheyenne Deibert, Hunter Farrell, Donovan Harrison, Taylor Kazinski, Will Mabry, Shaan Patel, Parker Rice, Jeremiah Smith and Macy Truitt, accompanied by their advisor, Mr. Neitzke. Together they comprised four legislative teams and a lobbyist. Long hours were spent in Committee on Thursday as each team presented, debated and then ranked all of the legislative bills. Clarksville Academy had two teams’ bills ranked high enough for them to make it out of Committee and on to the docket of their respective component [House or Senate] for possible debate.
The Red Senate team of Parker Rice, Macy Truitt and Will Mabry successfully debated their bill, Red Senate Bill 17-1-4, which ‘Provides for Suicide Prevention Education In Schools’. After passing in the Red Senate their bill got stuck in the politics of contention & animosity between the House & Senate for a day and a half where neither component wanted to entertain & debate bills from the other component. Finally the log jam broke on Sunday morning where their bill was presented, debated, passed in the Red House. From there it was sent to the Governor where it was signed into Youth In Government law. Their bill was a part of the Governor’s Packet, which meant it was favored by the governor and thus there was more pressure on the House & Senate chambers to pass this bill. This Red Senate team was also invited to an elite Lobbyist luncheon where only 28 Senators & Representatives were invited. Having their bill in the Governor’s Packet is probably what created their opportunity for participation in the luncheon.
The Blue House team of Hunter Farrell and Taylor Kazinski successfully debated their bill, Blue House Bill 17-1-10, which ‘Allows Pregnant Women to Park in Handicap Spaces During Their 3rd Trimester of Pregnancy’. After passing in the Blue House, their bill was presented, debated and passed in the Blue Senate where it then was forwarded on to the Governor’s cabinet for consideration, and was signed into Youth In Government law by student governor, Starr Rhee. During Sunday’s closing ceremony Hunter and Taylor’s team were recognized with an Outstanding Bill award.
What a fantastic year of Youth In Government accomplishments for a such a modest sized delegation!
Honors Biology
This week Honors Biology students learned how to transcribe a gene and translate the mRNA forming a protein. On Friday students competed in teams in a race to see who could synthesize a protein the fastest. One part of the room was designated as the nucleus and students had to transcribe there. At their desks (ribosomes) they were to translate the mRNA one codon at a time and find the corresponding anticodon in the cytoplasm. On the back of each anticodon card was a word. If the created sentence made sense, the protein was synthesized correctly.
Mock Crash
The Transportation group held a Mock Crash last week. It was a huge success and one that left our students with a powerful message. The event at Clarksville Academy Sports Complex was part of an anti-texting and driving campaign “Be in the zone – turn off your phone,” which involved a partnership among Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, Clarksville Police and Clarksville Fire Rescue. Prom News
Clarksville Academy Prom will be held on Saturday, May 20th at the beautiful James E. Bruce Convention Center in Hopkinsville, KY. Family and friends are invited to attend the Grand March at 6:00pm.
Prom and After Prom tickets will go on sale April 18th. Prom tickets are $35 each, and After Prom tickets are $20 each. All tickets can be purchased through Mrs. Amanda Pitt.
Athletic Updates
Sydneey Boykin (Freshman) & Austin Fisher (Senior) have been named to the TSWA (Tennessee Sports Writer’s Association) Class A All-State Team. They are 1 of only 15 players (15 girls, 15 boys) in the entire state of TN to earn this honor.
Stone Norris competed in our first ever Track Meet Friday, March 24 at West Creek High School. He medaled with a 3rd place finish in the 3200 meters! This is CA’s first Track Medal! We can’t wait to see what this team accomplishes!

FCA meets weekly on Wednesdays at 7:15AM in Coach Williams’ room. We invite all US students to attend.
Box Tops
This is a reminder that CA collects Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.

On Tuesday, March 28, 2017, Clarksville Academy senior Austin Fisher signed with Southwest Community College located in Memphis, TN. SWCC has one of the premier Junior College basketball programs in our region.
