Math

The 6th Graders played a board game called “Equate” this week during their Math class. The game is very similar to Scrabble.  Students had fun working with Rational numbers and order of operations, as well as equations.

 

Social Studies

This week in our 7th Grade Social Studies class, students will continue group presentations on the countries of Spain, Portugal, Greece and Italy! Each group is teaching the class on their assigned country. It has been amazing to see the many talents of our students come alive in the classroom!

 

8th Grade Social Studies students will continue the study of westward expansion and prominent Political figures of the early 1800’s. Essays and presentations on Henry Clay, John Calhoun and President James Monroe have highlighted our study. The development of our nations water travel and road system have also been a large part of our discussion. One of the most interesting topics that have been discussed, is the Industrial Revolution and the impact that it had on our country then and even today!

 

Science

7th Grade Science Students are learning about the discovery and structure of the DNA Molecule. On Friday, Students watched a NOVA documentary based on the contributions of specific Scientists to this important discovery.  Next week, students will be working with K’Nex models to simulate how DNA replication occurs in the nucleus so our cells can duplicate.

 

Music

The Intermediate Choir is in full gear rehearsing music and choreography for steak dinner. The students have been challenged this year to learn harmony parts and to be involved in the creation of some of the choreography. They have taken on this task with gusto and are excited about the show.

 

Latin

Intermediate School Latin is working on a love poem in honor of Valentine’s Day. These short poems are being written as couplets in the style of Ovid and Catullus.

 

Fitness

A new circuit-training program began last week in 7th and 8th Grade Physical Education.  They will use it twice a week for the next 6 weeks.  There are 3 different routines, teaching 9 different exercises.  The students exercise for 20 seconds and rest 20 seconds with a total workout time of 20 minutes.  The program is used to increase muscular endurance and increased flexibility.

 

Coach Hood took the part of the 7th grade boys to the fitness room to train today. After core warm-up exercises they performed alternating shoulder press while using the stability ball.  They finished with stability ball push-ups. Good work today!

 

French

8th Honors French is currently finishing up a reading on “Le blason familial”, the family coat of arms, heraldry, and family meals. It is impossible to disassociate French culture from daily vocabulary development to include speaking, oral comprehension, reading, and writing in the target language.

Guidance Lesson

Lower school students have been learning about making good choices and being model citizens through guidance lessons.

 

Math Lab

Second graders worked on subtraction problems. Students regrouped from the tens, hundreds, and were challenged to regroup in the thousands during Math Lab class!

 

Science Lab

First graders separate light into the colors of the rainbow.  We also used Prisms and flashlights to see the colors.  We learned the meaning behind ROY G. BIV.  We discussed rainbows as we conclude their unit on weather.

 

Second grade learned to identity types of fish found in TN rivers.  We used field guides provided by TWRA (Tn Wildlife Resource Agency).  We discussed fresh water habitats such as rivers, lakes, streams.

 

Third graders “mine” for natural resources.  We used chocolate chip cookies & oatmeal raisin cookies.  The resources symbolized by the chips (coal) and the raisins (gemstones) were extracted using toothpicks symbolizing mining todos.  If a mining tool was broken it was purchased at the cost of 2 gemstones. The “miners” had to mine their natural resource, either the chips or the raisin, without destroying the earth (the cookie).

 

 

1st grade

1st grade participating in 100 day senior citizen dance off. Dances include chicken dance, Macarena, everybody dance free style.

 

3rd Grade

Third grade students are showing their understanding of the Associative Property of Multiplication through board problems and explaining their thinking to classmates.

 

 

4th Grade

This week 4th-grade FUSE students completed the novel Inside Out and Back Again. We celebrated by trying the main characters favorite food, papaya. Not everyone loved the papaya, but all the students said they loved the story!

 

 

PE

4th Grade PE enjoyed a fun game of Handball this week in PE.

 

Spanish

Fifth grade students work together to create class stories while in Spanish class. This week they wrote a story about a sombrero-wearing car who went to New York to be successful. They are doing a great job demonstrating comprehension and developing creative stories!

 

Music

This week in LS music time we learned to read music using picture symbols that represent the melody, rhythm, beat and lyrics of a song. Students were able to use different instruments that introduced the concept of reading music in various forms. The students enjoyed exploring reading music with these activities and it was wonderful to see them understand the concepts that were taught.

 

FUSE

FUSE students practiced their Spelling list with a fun, hands-on number cube activity.

 

FUSE Social Studies students developed a budget to fund their expedition as a pioneer on the Oregon Trail. They worked with a small savings of $245 to plan the 5 month journey for their team of three pioneers.

 

Kindergarten

Kindergarten celebrated the 100th day of school big today. The teachers had arranged 5 centers for the students to work through. Each group enjoyed putting together chain links of 20 to make 100, colored a 100 assortment, worked as a team to build something with 100 blocks, listened to stories about the 100th day on iPads using QR codes, and had fun counting by 10’s as they played hopscotch in the hallway.  The students did 100 exercises led by their teachers.  They dressed as if they were 100 years old and brought in 100 items to count into groups of 10 on paper plates.  These are just a few of the activities done by our 100 Days Smarter Kindergartners.

FCA

The amazing support FCA saw last week from the students, parents, and staff at Clarksville Academy was staggering. The Humane Society drive in memory of Brock Blick was a huge success. The overwhelming response allowed us to give so many needed supplies to this worthwhile mission. Each grade, faculty and parents offering loving support to the Blick family signed memorial pages. Thank you to everyone who participated in this FCA led project.

Congratulations

Sydney Halliday was recognized by the Tennessee Soccer Association as state of TN female referee of the year for 2016. She is a level 7 referee and has also been invited to join the Tennessee Association of Referees.

 

Modern History

Upper School students in Mr. Christmas’s Modern History class work hard each week to prepare original articles on topics of their choice over the past 100 years of history. Dual Anatomy

This week students in dual enrollment anatomy recorded their own electrocardiogram wavelengths following four treatments.

 

Honors English II

This week Honors English II is finishing up the long journey students have taken with Huckleberry Finn down the Mississippi River.  Reading Mark Twain’s classic novel, the class has followed the protagonist through one escapade after another, noting how, as Twain wisely wrote: ““Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. Broad, wholesome, charitable views of men and things cannot be acquired by vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”  During class, students have written creatively, using Huck’s distinct dialect in responses to the novel and will soon finish up critical essays that explore its important themes.  In addition, students continue to take ACT English practice quizzes in earnest preparation for those nerve-wracking ACT test days that are approaching for many students.

1st Grade

This week in first grade, we jumped right into Math Chapter 7. Students modeled and compared two-digit numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to symbols. Throughout the week, students compared numbers using base-ten blocks, pictures, and looking at place-value to determine the greater or lesser number. Our first graders really enjoyed our Comparing Numbers Scavenger Hunt around the classroom. Their job was to find the cards around the room, identify the missing symbol, record their answer, scan the QR code to check their answer, and read the next clue.

 

Math Lab

Students studied coins and money amounts. They learned how to make different amounts of change using the least amount of coins in Math Lab.

Science Lab

Second Graders study Fossil formations and learn about extinction.  We created mock fossils, and view fossil sample , identifying both plant and animal remains.

 

First graders continue with their study of Weather and Weather Instruments. We are recording our weather data and becoming Jr. Meteorologists.

44’s Night

44’s Night will begin at 4:30 on Tuesday, January 31 with a spaghetti dinner. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $6.  Throughout the evening’s activities, we will not only serve dinner, but have a silent auction, free-throw shooting contests, presentations, Senior night and the varsity basketball teams will take on McEwen.  We hope to see you there!

Clarksville Academy students in the dual enrollment Anatomy and Physiology course receive credit for Biology 2010 and 2011.  This is a sophomore level course that serves as a prerequisite for the nursing and pre-professional programs at Austin Peay State University (APSU).

Clarksville Academy students have proven to be academically competitive with main campus sophomores. From the 2010 enrolled class to the conclusion of this past fall semester of 2016, our students have had a 100% pass rate.  The overall class average for the lecture portion of the course was a B, while the lab portion was an A.  Additionally, our students’ class average for the lab mid-term and final exams were higher than the main campus class averages by 10 points.

Students enrolled in the course complete the lecture portion of the class at the Clarksville Academy campus, and travel to the Sundquist building at APSU for the lab portion.  The labs that students participate in are exceptional. Not only are students dissecting and identifying structures using models, our students use biopic equipment to monitor their MMUR, ECGs, and lung volume.  They also conduct blood typing, urinalysis, and create a hematocrit.

Clarksville Academy is dedicated to not only preparing each student for college, but to giving them the tools to excel.

Debate

Basketball

Freshman Sydneey Boykin was honored by Culver’s as their Player of the Week for her performance during the Greenbrier game. Congratulations to Sydneey for this wonderful honor.

 

FCA

Our community is saddened by the loss of Brock Blick. While Brock did not attend Clarksville Academy, many of our students knew Brock and his family and want to show their support in his memory. CA’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes is spearheading a drive for donations for the Humane Society. The Blick family has requested that Brock’s memory be honored in this way. The drive will be this week, Monday, January 23, through Friday, January 27. Monetary donations will also be accepted. Please see Debbie Turnage when turning this in.

Varsity Dance

All girls interested in trying out for the Varsity Dance Team need to attend one or both days of the upcoming Varsity Dance Clinic.  The clinic will be Tuesday, Feb 21 and Thursday, Feb 23, from 3:15-4:30 in the Aux Gym.  There will be dancers, dance teachers and dance coaches to help teach technique and skills needed for tryouts.  Please email Theresia Burchett, tbburchett@aol.com if you are interested or to ask questions.

Nine members of the Prom Committee traveled to view the prom venue in Hopkinsville. They looked at the space and made decisions on decorations. Bowling

Congratulations to 8th grader Leah Hayes for making the TN State Bowling Tournament in Smyrna last week. It is an elite honor to make the state tournament in any sport but to do so as an 8th grader is even more exciting. Leah finished 64th individually and we could not be more proud of her success.

1st Grade

First grade students presented timelines with 7 important events that have happened to them from birth to now. The students came in with a variety of creative ideas and enjoyed sharing with their classmates.

3rd Grade

3rd Grade had a busy week! Students participated in a variety of activities throughout various subjects. Our in class science lesson had students working with minerals and rocks. Students learned all about Minerals & Rocks in a variety of ways through research, vocabulary study, creation of their birthstone and a Group Minerals & Rocks candy display!

 

The third grade classes have been studying the continent of Antarctica.  Here is some art work of the wildlife found in Antarctica.

 

Math Lab

Students are working on the Distributive Property of Multiplication in Math Lab.

Science Lab

Third graders study sedimentary rocks and identify the components: sand, silt/mud, pebbles and stones.  We created sedimentary sandwiches using marshmallow cream for silt, jelly for sand, mini chocolate chips for pebbles, and mini marshmallows for small stones.  We had samples of sedimentary rocks to view and reviewed igneous and metamorphic rocks as well.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten students are really learning their sentence mechanics. We have focused on beginning sentences with capital letters and ending sentences with punctuation. Using our descriptive words and inventive spelling the students described their own snowman or snowlady.  Come see our display in the lower school hallway. The students are super proud of their work.
