Youth In Government
The 65th Annual Tennessee YMCA Youth In Government Capitol Conference was held March 1-4, 2018 in the State Capitol in Nashville. Clarksville Academy had 29 delegates participate in the Youth Legislature conference. Students gained experience learning how our Tennessee state government works via a four day mock government session. This was the very first conference to use the beautiful, newly renovated, Cordell Hull facilities in conjunction with using the state capitol.
Our keynote speaker for the opening ceremony of the joint session of the assembly was a former federal judge who spoke about criminal cases that he adjudicated in Clarksville and how mandatory minimum sentences are applied to everyone associated with a crime even if one may have played a minor role in the crime. One crime case in particular that he pointed out was of a 23 year old man who was given a mandatory life sentence for having played a minor role in a drug related crime. Addressing 615 youth legislators from around the state he stated that, as a legislator, this process is not about you and how many times you stand in front of the group to speak, but rather it’s about fighting for what you feel passionate about, and fighting in a way that will want to make others join you in your fight. The guest speaker, appointed to a lifetime, highly lauded position, chose to resign as judge so he could fight for and promote civil rights due to the injustices he was seeing from his former position as a federal judge.
Outstanding Bill Awards went to the Red House team of Cheyenne Deibert, Jacob Hay, and Chris Magrans for their bill which was An Act to Establish an Identity Theft Passport Program and the Red Senate team of Hunter Farrell and Taylor Kazinski for their bill Adding Therapists to Schools to Help Prevent Suicide. The lawyer team of Pryce O’Connor and Morgan Ozanne argued three cases in the State Supreme Court and won all three cases. Maggie Clark was elected to be Red Speaker Pro-tempore of the House in 2019 and Ben Truex was appointed to be the Video Editor of the 2019 Press Corps.
Political Science
Upper School Political Science students are preparing bill ideas to present to their respective classes next week. Ideas range from Junk Food Tax to Raising Minimum Wage. Should be a very interesting time of debate!
Clarksville Academy Night
Every Wednesday night at Firehouse Subs. Please go by either the Madison Street store or the Wilma Rudolph store and let them know you are with Clarksville Academy. Clarksville Academy will receive 15% of the sale. Every Wednesday night is Clarksville Academy Night at Firehouse Subs.
CAA
Clarksville Academy Association (CAA) is the parent volunteer association of Clarksville Academy. There are many opportunities throughout the school year for parents, guardians, and grandparents to get involved by volunteering your time and/or contributions. Teacher Treats
Each grade level will have the opportunity one time during the school year to provide Teacher Treats. You may contribute snacks, treats, drinks or a monetary donation to help purchase treats. Please watch for your grade’s week and contact your representative.
Box Top Contest
The CAA invites everyone to participate in our Box Tops Contest this year! When you turn in your Box Tops please label the baggie with your student’s name, grade and teacher (Lower School). A tally will be kept of all box top returns and a Pizza party will be awarded to the class with the most labels returned!
FCA
The Fellowship of Christian Athletes would like to invite everyone to be a part of FCA this year! High School will meet in room #118 Coach Trent’s Room, Intermediate School will meet in Mrs. Drake’s room. Please make plans to attend Wednesdays at 7:15am, everyone is welcome!
