Lower School News for December 9 – 15, 2013

Living Literacy Day

Thank you to all the people who made “Living Literacy Day” a success! The students were so excited about experiencing this wonderful tradition at CA. Please check out the link to The Leaf Chronicle about our event. Also, check our website later this week for an online gallery of our fun day!

Math Lab

Students in fifth grade measured the circumference, diameter, and radius of circles. Then, they decorated the circles to make Christmas ornaments.

Science Lab

This week in Science Lab Lower School students learned about identifying evergreen trees. Using Leaf Key Guides, students measured pine needles and counted the number of needles in a bundle to identify White Pines, Pitch Pines, and Ponderosa Pines. We examined broad leaf evergreens and identified Southern Magnolia trees by the thickness of the leaf, the waxy coating and the rusty color on the back of the leaf.

To link our Living Literacy Day and "Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree", we discussed what we would do with left over tree greenery, and decided we could make wreaths using paper plates.

Box Tops & Campbell’s Labels

This is a reminder that CA collects Campbell’s labels and Box Tops through our CAA. The money raised from this project funds various school improvement projects. Last year we raised over $2000 through the Box Tops program alone! Please turn yours into your child’s teacher or Ms. Turnage in the front office.
