Clarksville Academy - Promoting Academic Excellence, Moral Integrity, Physical Growth, and Civic Responsibility

CBL September Kickoff

“Too often we give children answers to remember rather than problems to solve.”

        Quote by Dr. Roger Lewin

Friday was Clarksville Academy’s Challenge Based Learning kickoff for the 2012-13 school year for all students in grades 9-12.

Students began the day with motivational speeches from five active members of our community explaining how students have the power to make a difference in Clarksville through participation in CBL.  Each “mentor” represented one of our Big Ideas– Health, Sustainability, Culture, and Lifestyle.

Dr. Anne Black, an APSU Health & Human Performance professor, spoke to students about the health of the community.

Mrs. Colleen White, an APSU Biology professor, enthusiastically advised on sustainability matters.

Mr. Kell Black, an art professor at APSU, inspired students with his unique way of connecting art to every aspect of life.

Mr. James Chavez, President & CEO of the Economic Development Council, talked about bringing new businesses to Clarksville.

Mrs. Ginna Holleman, Executive Director of the United Way Greater Clarksville Region, tied all of the Big Ideas together, explaining how they function to make a better community.

Next, it was time for the big reveal.  Two weeks earlier students were able to fill out an interest survey to select which Essential Questions interested them the most.  Through the course of a skit based on the popular TV show, “The Voice”, students learned who their “coaches” are going to be for the year.

After the reveal, students were divided into their Essential Question groups to be directed by their Teacher/ Facilitators.    The remainder of the day, students worked hard on learning about the structure and goals of CBL, developing their Challenges, and creating Challenge Videos.

Student Challenge Videos will be posted soon!

In the meantime, watch the video below to see a little more about what happened and student reaction.
