Lower School News: March 12 – March 16, 2018

3rd Grade

Following our recent studies of natural resources (renewable & nonrenewable), and natural disasters, third graders completed a hands-on Stem Challenge entitled “Goo-Be-Gone:  Cleaning Up Oil Spills.”  Students learned about the largest marine oil spill in history and its impact, “The Deepwater Horizon oil spill of 2010” (a.k.a. Gulf of Mexico oil spill).  They learned new Science vocabulary, tested a variety of sorbents for most and least effective oil absorptivity, collected math data, learned of environmental effects of an oil spill, worked in collaborative groups and maintained a science notebook.  Students reflected on their findings, how they worked together and discussed ideas for improvement.

Book Fair

The Book Fair will be on campus all week! Stop in and see what exciting things we have to offer!

Math Lab

Students discussed fractions in math lab. They wrote fractions, added fractions, and reduced fractions to lowest terms using square crackers. This was an edible treat!

Science Lab

This week in Science Lab 3rd Graders created precipitation using plastic models, ice, and hot water.  They recorded the process on lab data logs, noting the stages of the water cycle. We discussed cloud formation and cloud types.

2nd Grade

Second graders began an exciting science unit covering matter. The students discussed mass, volume, temperature, and the three types of matter. They chose objects around the classroom and compared the mass of the objects using a balance scale. Next week, the students will learn about physical and chemical changes.
