Lower School News: February 5 – February 9, 2018

FUSE

5th grade FUSE students worked to edit one another’s opinion writing pieces.  They gave positive feedback and suggestions for corrections during the revision process.

4th grade FUSE students worked with Intermediate School iLink students to design and create a catapult for this week’s STEM challenge.

Fourth grade FUSE students participated in a choice board spelling activity to practice their words in class this week.  Michelangelo style was a popular choice!

3rd Grade

The students were excited to work in small groups to locate their vocabulary words in a dictionary. They learned how to locate the entry words using the guide words at the corner of each page.

Science News

Third graders completed their STEM challenge that began last week.  We applied a low level acidic solution to limestone rock to observe the effects of acid rain. We placed items in jars and covered them with the solution.  We made our predictions last week and this week recorded our results on our lab forms.  The acidic solution turned our leaves and pine needles brown, corroded our paper clips, and completely dissolved our eggshells.

Second graders conducted a STEM lab on Desert Habitats as they complete their study of Land Habitats. They traced and transferred cactus patterns. We measured water into pipettes and saturated our “cactus plants”.  We added waxy coatings to some, leaving others exposed, to observe how cactus are equipped to survive in the desert .

Students in first grade completed a Weather STEM lab as they conclude their January unit on weather.  We measured ice pond samples and discussed the recent news items called ice jams.  We measured icicles and snow, saved from our most recent snowfall. Students designed models for snow towers or snow men.
