Lower School News: August 21 – August 25, 2017

Third Grade

Third grade students enjoyed learning about “The Total Solar Eclipse” as they explored and learned how the Sun, Earth and Moon come into complete alignment with a model display.  Students also enjoyed making solar eclipse t-shirts and drawing a sketch of the alignment. They made T shirts, participated in science discussions and demonstrations to prepare for this once in a life time event.

FUSE Math

FUSE math students created solar eclipse models today.  We used our models to discuss the different types of angles created by the relationship of the positions of the moon, Earth, and sun.  Students used their models to demonstrate right, acute, obtuse, and straight angles.  We then discussed what phase of the eclipse is represented by each type of angle.

FUSE Reading

This week in FUSE we discussed myths and stories about solar eclipses. Students gave the sun and the moon personalities and created stories about how they interact during an eclipse. We have some fabulous story tellers and artists in FUSE!

Science News

Our Lower School Science Lab kicked off our year focusing on the upcoming Total Eclipse.

Second graders reviewed the rules for properly viewing the Eclipse, and students practiced with our NASA certified glasses!

First graders made “solar eclipse bracelets”, using beads that change color when exposed to UV rays!  The beads represent Bailey’s Beads which will be visible during the total eclipse.

Third graders made Sunprints, and reviewed the power of solar rays, as we discussed how to view the eclipse.

Art News

Welcome back Cougars! I had a wonderful summer and I hope you and your family did too! As we start this new school year, I just wanted to remind you of a few things that are very important to our Art program. Even though we wear aprons in the art room, messes and stains still occur often, even for me! When your child has art as an Enrichment, be thoughtful about what they wear on those day.  As always, we are looking for donations! Wipes , Germx, and Kleenex are always needed in the art room. Thank you for always supporting the Art program at CA and remember to ask your children what they are learning and doing in the art room!

Math News

Students discussed how to identify the properties of rectangles. They identified and measured the length and width of their rectangles created from Pixie Sticks.  This was a fun, edible activity for third graders.
