Clarksville Academy has wonderful year in sports. We have had many exciting events in recent weeks. We want to congratulate the following students for their success.

Bryan Dirksen & Brandi Phillips competed in the State Bowling Tournament in Smyrna last week. Brandi Phillips placed 56th in state and had a tournament average of 153.25. Bryan Dirksen finished 16th out of the top 24! Bryan advanced to the semi-final but had to place in the top 6 to make it to the finals. Both students represented CA well and we couldn’t be more proud of their accomplishments!

Our boys bowling team captured the District Champion title for the season! Though they didn’t capture the Regional title, their play in these games was great. We are proud of both our girls and boys bowling teams for such a wonderful season.

Carleisha Hanns, Lauren Maki & Cole Swaffer have all been named Player of the Week for their outstanding performance on the basketball court in recent weeks. We are so proud of all these students.

Our intermediate boys and girls basketball teams have both experienced a wonderful season. If you haven’t caught a game yet, be sure to. Our varsity Cougars and Lady Cougars have also had a good season and would appreciate your support at their remaining games.

The boys soccer, baseball and softball teams are starting spring conditioning and gearing up for another wonderful season. Be sure to come out and watch their games this spring.

Key Club officers have been busy calculating service hours from last semester, and nasty grams have been sent out to those members who did not earn enough hours to remain in Key Club. Those members who did not make the cut are encouraged to rejoin in the fall. Members who are short 1-4 hours have until Tuesday to purchase their missing hours so that they can remain in the club.

Our first all-member meeting for 2012 will be this Thursday, Jan. 26 at 7:15a.m. in the gym. We are also stressing and enforcing the 5 hours with the club from this point onward.

The annual Key Club Convention is March 16-18 in Chattanooga. All Key Club members are encouraged to attend and members will be receiving information about convention in the mandatory meeting on Thursday. Current service opportunities include working the concession stand and the spirit cart during home basketball games.

Also, we have decided to continue with our F.U.E.L. food drive. Our club is collecting the following items to donate to local high school food pantries: canned tuna, canned chicken, dry chicken noodle soup, tuna helper, jars of peanut butter, fruit cups, pudding cups, fruit juice, granola bars, and dry instant meals (just add water).

Sarah Elrod a Senior and Candice Swaffer a Freshman at Clarksville Academy in Clarksville, Tennessee are two of more than 500 high school cheerleaders and dancers from across the U.S. who will be performing in the world famous London New Year’s Day Parade.

The individuals invited to perform in the parade qualified for the trip after being selected as an All American at one of the summer camps hosted by Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA). All Americans are selected to try out based on superior cheerleading skills at camps across the country.

Varsity has been hosting camps since 1974. Since then, they have been leading the way by combing high-energy entertainment with traditional school leadership. Each year Varsity Brands trains over 325,000 cheerleaders at over 5,000 camp sessions.

Only the top 12% of the cheerleaders who attend Varsity summer camps earn the chance to march in the holiday spectacular. In addition to performing in the London parade, the All Americans will have the chance to tour London during their seven-day trip.

“This is the 25th year we’ve been able to bring talented cheerleaders to London, where they can showcase their skills to a very enthusiastic international audience,” says Mike Fultz, the Varsity International Event Coordinator.

Achieving a 24.6 composite ACT score while the state average is 19.1 and the national average is 21.1.

Varsity football advanced to the second round of the TSSAA State Tournament with a 10-2 record. Our football staff received the coveted A.F. Bridges Sportsmanship Award over all coaching staffs in A, AA, and AAA.

AnnaMichelle Moore placed 7th in the State for golf, while our boy’s team advanced to the Regional Tournament.

Eight of our cheerleaders traveled to NYC to participate in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. Two will travel to London to perform later this month.

Girl’s soccer advanced to the Quarterfinals in District play.

CA went Apple! 9th-12th grade students were issued MacBooks, staff received MacBook Pros and the Lower/Intermediate classes have a state-of-the-art technology lab.

This partial listing doesn’t capture one of the most important achievements: the continued devotion of our faculty and staff to the vision of this school. Just last week we witnessed the magic that occurs when exceptional educators collaborate to bring learning to life. Lower school students were afforded the opportunity to board The Polar Express for a ‘train ride’. Each student was able to travel using reading and imagination as the transportation system to another world. Our students had additional related lessons including how to make snow in science class, calculating distance in math, (how far is it from Clarksville to the North Pole?) and most importantly discovering that ‘believing’ can truly make dream’s come true. Without loving, enthusiastic, creative, and highly skilled teachers this experience of exploration and discovery would not have been possible.

The CA Polar Express day was filled with many memorable snapshot moments but my favorite has to be when one second grade student, who was boarding the train, wide eyed with her ticket clutched in her hand, looked up at our Conductor, (Coach Todd Hood), and said, “This is the best day I have ever had. I have always wanted to ride this train!” For me, that says it all. We reinforced to our students the power of combining our mind and knowledge with imagination. The sum of these can transport you anywhere you want to go. When students realize this priceless life lesson, the gift of education is one that they will respect and cherish forever.

As you have heard me say before, thank you for the opportunity to educate your children. It is a gift that the faculty and staff and I enjoy each and every day!

For the Record…I am so very proud to be Cougar this holiday season. 2012 will bring more great things to CA and I am glad you are along for the ride.

Merry Christmas! May you all enjoy a holiday break of fun, laughter and making great family memories. See you in January!
