The Clarksville Academy boys basketball team is one step ahead of where it was a year ago.

The Cougars (29-2) added the District 10-A tournament championship to their regular-season title Saturday night with a dominating 61-44 victory against McEwen (21-5) at Jo Byrns.

“After winning the regular season last year and then not winning the district tournament (the 2009 Cougars were upset in the semifinals by Houston County), this was something we stressed,” Academy coach Josh Smith said while his players celebrated on the parquet floor in Cedar Hill. “We wanted to complete the deal.”

Complete it the Cougars did behind the Smith twins, 6-foot-5 juniors Malcolm and Martin, who combined for a brotherly double-double of 31 points and 21 rebounds. Malcolm had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Martin 12 and six.

Both were named to the all-tournament team along with Cougar guard Travis Russell, and Malcolm was honored as the district’s Player of the Year.
